rounds remaining, the battle to win the coveted title of State Supercross Champion is coming down to the wire in just about all of the 15 classes. Racing action in the 50cc Chain class was more of a schooling than a race, as Gannon Audette of Dalbo, Minnesota, came to town and showed the boys how to twist the throttle. The 8-year-old launched his screaming yellow Cobra over the 40-foot finishline double with a style and finesse that would put fear in the eyes of many older riders. Audette went from holeshot to checkered flag uncontested in both the heat and the main. Danny Greig of Savage, Minnesota, who went down on the start of the heat race and finished eighth, returned in the main to score second with a nevergive-up attitude. Third belonged to the consistent Travis Grindland, also from Savage, who also finished third in the heat race. Gannon's twin brother, Gunner, who placed behind him in the heat race, slipped to fourth in the hotly contested race. Prior Lake resident Joey Sullivan finished out the top five on his KTM. Gannon Audette showed that his speed is not limited to the 50cc automatic as he also won the 65cc (7-9) class. He definitely showed why he is one of the top micro pilots in the upper Midwest. Local fast boy Kyle "Bear" Ohland of Prior Lake took on all comers in the 80cc (7 -11) class, including his neighbor and best friend, Kyle Beckman, by showing the kids the fast way around the track for a holeshotto-checkered-f1ag victory without ever giving up the lead. Beckman tried in vain to catch the little Bear but was unable to accomplish his mission though not from a lack of trying. He was nipping on the Bear's paws, waiting for a mistake to be made, but he had to settle for the runner-up spot behind his buddy. Derek Davis edged out fellow Belle Plaine resident Ryan Miller for third in the main. Miller, who beat Davis in the heat race, finished in fourth in the main after a poor start and had to make his way through the pack just to get there. Fifth spot belonged to Allan Quandrud of Hastings, Minnesota. Ohland also got the holeshot in both of the 80cc (12-15) motos and finished third in the heat race and a frustrating seventh in the main (due to bad luck in the main, after it was red-flagged and restarted). Since stepping up to the RM80, Ohland has shown that his big brother Brett is not the only one in the big black rig that knows how to win - and make Mom nervous). "1 really like riding an 80 and hope to go to the Loretta Lynn's National next year," said Kyle. In the Pro class, Cory Keeney kept up his undefeated record, as the Oakdale resident made it his sixth win in as many attempts. Promoter/Pro racer Lee Theis ran second in the first half of the moto before his bike quit. Prior Lake's 16-year-old Brett Ohland took the second spot on his 125 against the bigger and more powerful 250s. Rick Smith was third, Mike Bottolfson finished fourth, and Josh Carlson rounded out the top five. Gene Miller of Belle Plaine was the only other two-class winner on the night, as he won both the 250cc B and Over 30 Vet classes in convincing fashion. With only four races remaining in the series, it looks to be some of the best racing short of the AMA Nationals. BY GUY OHLAND ELKO, MN, JULY 15 y the time the more than 490 riders had started streaming into the Elko Motor Speedway on Sunday morning, the Motokazie crew had already been hard at work getting the B track into tip-top shape for the day ahead. "We had to reroute the water system on the track since we haven't had much rain here in the past few weeks, to make sure we had enough water to keep the dust down," said Lee Theis, owner of Motokazie. Past state motocross champion Chad Schmidt wowed the crowd of spectator and racers alike as he showed the speed and talent that has put him in the lead of both the District 23 and the Dealer Series points chases in the 80cc (7 -11) class. In the first moto, Elliot Kastner got the holes hot but, "Little Smitty" made short work of Kastner as he dived under him for the lead by the third corner. As he launched his Northstar Sports/Northway Sports KX85 over the big PowerMadd jump, the race looked like a runaway victory. Then disaster stuck when he lost control in the last double of the rhythm section and went down in some hay bales, allowing Kastner, Eric Quast and Justin Posusta to get past before he could get going again. Schmidt quickly passed Posusta in the whoops and then Quast at the finish line at the end of lap one. Kastner seamed to have an easy win wrapped up, but the moto gods weren't smiling on him. He tipped over in a corner and Schmidt got by and went on for the win. Quast also got by him and took second in the moto. Kastner ended up third, with Posusta fourth and Bryce Bernloehr coming in fifth. "I came up short in the rhythm section, cased the landing, and got squiggly and went down in the hay bales," recounted Schmidt. "I was going as fast as I could, so I wouldn't get that far behind." In the second moto, Schmidt ripped the holeshot and ran away with the win. Kastner tried in vain to run at the leader's pace but had to settle for second overall. Quast was the last one on the podium, unable to catch Kastner. The little rocket boy, Cole Seaton, edged out Bernloehr at the finish line to take fourth overall with a 6-4 score on his RM80. "Mr. Consistent," Bernloehr, took fifth overall with a solid pair of fives. Schmidt hurled his KX85 to another pair of holeshots in the 80cc (9-12) class and won the first moto. Unfortunately, he was denied kissing the trophy girl, as Trevor Tuma took top honors after slipping by Schmidt to take the second-moto win. Tuma's well-earned trophy kiss came after a long chase by Schmidt. Kastner, on the other hand, easily won the 65cc (7-9) class, displaying the speed that he'll need on his trip to Loretta Lynn's. It was definitely "Miller Time" in the Over 25 B and Vet B classes, as a face from the past surfaced at the starting line. Belle Plaine's Gene Miller decided to come out and show the boys that he still has the speed. Miller pulled four huge holes hots on his LCR/Ride Sports-backed YZ250 and ran completely unchallenged in both classes. cue I e "I've been running and riding a lot to get back in shape and to try and get back up to speed," Miller said. "I love this bike. It is all stock except for the pipe, and I just rips." David Hein tried in vain in both classes to catch Miller, but it was just not to be, and he settled for second overall in both classes. In the Vet B, Troy Johnson took the last spot on the podium with a strong ride. Eric Garvey ended up going 5-4 for fourth overall. Rounding out the top five was Miller's riding partner and fellow SMOG (South Metro Old Guys) member Brad Carter, who scored 4-8 to get the fifth position. Other than Miller, there were two more double-class winners. Jeremy Girard did it in the 125cc B and Youth classes, and Brett Ohland took the 125cc A and 16-24 A classes. Even with a fall in the first turn and running a 125 against the 250s, Ohland went from dead last to first in the first 16-24 A moto to have a perfect day. With only two events left in the Dealer Series, it is really comjng down to the wire in just about every class. With the hottest scoring girls in the Midwest, August 26 is definitely a date you want to put on your calendar so you won't miss the action at Elko Speedway.
