The real action on the track was mid~ pack, where Steve Latham was hounded by Kim Kinslow, Catherine Sanchirico and Dean Townsend. As the three were riding wheel to wheel, the 63-year-old Townsend, who was on the throttle, put a Bradshaw-like block-pass on Sanchirico nearly driving her off the track. Not appreciating the move, Sanchirico retumed the favor in the same spot on the following lap, putting her ahead of Townsend for good, "I wasn't trying to block her," Townsend said. Central Illinois Motorcycle Club Hillclimb Goodman Fast Man By BUD NORTHRUP j NEOGA, fl, JULY 21 Mark Goodman Jr" the 18-year-old young gun from Indianapolis. had another of his great hill climbing nights as he claimed two class wins and the overall Fast Time award at the Central Illinois Motorcycle Club hillclimb on July 21. Goodman took the Fast Time award in the supercompetitive 600cc class by topping the rough, steep, 90-foot hill in 2.524 seconds on his Honda in the first round. The current class points leader, Andy Fortner, was his closest challenger as he sailed his CR500 high over the top in 2,617 seconds, In second-round action. Fortner challenged hard again, stopping the clock in a very fast 2,644 seconds, but he had to settle for second place, Goodman's second win came in the 250cc class, in which he delivered the first sub~three second run of the night, a 2,901-second flight on his KX250, That time would have held up for the win, but just for fun, he rode again and flew his Kawie over the top in an even faster 2.852 seconds in the second round. The cur· rent class points leader, Matt Peters, also broke the three-second mark with a sizzling 2.977 ~second run on his Honda for second Fast Fridays Speedway Bast Decides Both Mains By M. SOBER AUBURN. CA, JULY 20 Multi-time Northern California Speedway points champion Bart "Simpson" Bast was instrumental in determining the fates of the night's two biggest races at the Fast Fridays weekly Speedway event at the Gold Country Fairgrounds. in the Handicap main. Bast started from behind his usual 50-yard-Iine spot; what was unusual was that he sat alone at the rear of the pack, as fellow back-yardage veterans Bobby Hedden, Mike Faria and Chris Manchester were all 3000 miles away on the East Coast, contesting the King of Speedway competition in Owego, New York, Ten yards ahead of Bast, on the 40, were Tommy Hedden and Cal-Expo Speedway specialist Bob Hicks, Veterans Rich Marcucci and Paul Orlandi sat on the 20, and reigning Junior Speedway champion Bryan Yarrow was at the point behind the lO-yard chalk, Yarrow naturally took the initial lead. Orlandi moved up to second after he beat Marcucci off the start. Hedden moved into fourth, ahead of Hicks, and Bast followed the field, The freight train traveled through the first four laps fairly uneventfully until the white flag came out, signaiing the finai lap, At that moment, Hicks, Hedden and Marcucci decided to see if they could collectively perform a NASCAR-type three-wide in the front straightaway, right behind Orlandi. The immediate answer was that all three riders went down, bringing out the red fiag, After cieaning up the debris and shaking out the cobwebs, Hedden and Marcucci decided that they'd had enough and decided not to rejoin the single-file restart, On the restart, Yarrow was positioned at the front, with Bast, Orlandi and Hicks staggered directly behind him, Mysteriously, it was decided that two laps remained in the race. Hungry Valley SVRA Taylor Trounces OTHG MX By CHRIS SANCHIRICO GORMAN, CA, JULY 14 Paul Taylor took the measure of the Over 38 Beginner class with a convincing ] - 1 victory. The well-liked Hungry Valley track was pounded by the sweltering sun and heat, resulting in very dry conditions and even some blue~groove turns. Despite a very warm Juiy day, the gate was filled with 19 anxious Vets, Coming out with the holeshot at the conclusion of the fast, slightiy uphill start was CR-mounted Taylor, who took advantage of his fantastic start and, with a clear track ahead, quickly gapped the field. After one lap, the running order was Taylor, John Jacobs and Joey Escobar, The Hungry Valley SVRA: Paul Taylor won the overall Over 38 Beginner victory in Gorman, California. cue I e • n e vv s AUGUST 22,2001 65
