Fast Fridays Speedway: Bryan Yarrow leads the Handicap main at the Gold Country
Fairgrounds in Auburn, California, while Paul Orlandi amuses himself by riding the outside
line en route to a second-place finish.
The tapes went up and Yarrow assumed his
position up front. and for a lap and a half he
stayed in front. In tum three on the last lap,
Bast applied an additional dose of veteran
pressure on Yarrow, expecting the youngster
to typically fade off the inside line, at which
time the stubborn rookie slowed a bit,
attempting to protect his tentative lead and
ended up sprawled in the tum·three dirt. Bast
stayed uprigRt after the contact and crossed
the finish in first, but he was deemed to be the
cause of Yarrow's demise and was sent to the
back of the field for rough riding. Yarrow was
credited with the victory, second went to
Orlandi and third to Hicks.
In the Scratch main, Hedden made a surprise visit to the starting line, considering the
hand injury he incurred in the Handicap main,
but he was immediately excluded after push·
ing into the starting tapes from his lane-two
starting position. On the restart, Bast flew out
of gate four and set a pace that no other rider
could match. Chad Felicio had the next·best
gate but chose to ride the outside line, leaving
former Junior champion Eric Carrillo to the
inside line, which he developed into a second~
place finish. Felicio finished fourth and Hedden was credited with fourth.

behind them. With less than two laps to go,
Winsett executed an excellent slide job, coming up just in front of Johnson off the second
tum and causing him to check up momentariIy. This gave Kendig a few feet of breathing
room, which he held on to for the win.
After winning the Sportsman heat, Kendig
appeared to be the odds-on favorite again, as
Johnson and Winsett were not entered in this
class. However, Klinefelter was quick off the
line and immediately put his screaming Honda
two-stroke at the outside limits of the groove
and started to pull away from Bob Sweeten,
Hormes and Kendig.
Earlier in the evening, Sweeten was
involved in one of the closest finals of the
year. Having just returned in June from a broken ankle, he took the Over 30 lead from Dallas Baer and Greg Sassaman. Baer stayed
close, looking for a weakness. With about two
laps to go, Baer tried to slip under Sweeten.
but Sweeten held him off. Coming off the final
tum, they crossed the line side by side. After a
few minutes, it was announced that Sweeten
had won.
Baer later came back and held off Sassaman
for the 500cc Two-Vaive win on his Battiefield
H·D·sponsored machine.
Johnson got into another close scuffle in
the 250cc A race. He and Klinefelter battled
for the lead in the early laps before Klinefelter
gradually started to pull away,
The little guys put on a good show in the
65cc (7·11) final. Hayden Avery and Brandon
Robinson jumped in front of the 65s, with
John Long and Austin Greenland close
behind. Avery and Robinson ran nose to tail
for the first half until Robinson tried to slip
under him, but he fell. bringing out the red
flag, On the single-file restart, Avery took the
lead, Long took second, and Robinson worked
his way back to a close fourth at the end.
