Fast Fridays Speedway Joiner Joins In By M_ SOBER Variety Riders Hillclimb Wheelwright's Right On at Ottawa He By BaD NORTHROP OTIAWA,IL, JULY 8 Eric Wheelwright from Hanover, Illinois, made his first appearance in District 17 hillclimbing at Ottawa on July 8 and made his presence felt by taking the Fast Time Award while winning the 600cc class on his CR500. Wheelwright, the defending National Champion in the 250cc class, shot his Honda over the rough, low-traction, 130-foot hill in 3.899 seconds to take the win. Randy "Rocketman" Trosper was his closest challenger with a 4-second-f1at run, and class points leader "Fast Andy" Fortner claimed third with a 4.039-second time on his Honda. Marc Stamm and Lane Schultz, both also Hondamounted, filled out the top five places. Wheelwright nearly had a perfect day, but his good buddy Stamm spoiled that by taking the 250cc-c1ass win with a 4.327-second run on his YZ250, while Wheelwri9ht delivered a 4.363-second run on his Yamaha for second place. As noted above, Wheelwright is the defending National Champion in the class, but Stamm is no slouch, as he carries the 2N plate, and he finished second behind Wheelwright at the 2000 Nationals. Jon Creek was close behind Stamm for third with a 4.416second time on his RM250, with Honda pilots Matt Peters and Cody Jenner finishing fourth and fifth. Wade Schultz had another double-win day, his first coming in the 750cc class, in which his 4.044-second run on his Yamaha twin was 8 decisive winner. Uoyd Haas, running his "Kawazuki" triple, ran second in 4.437 seconds, with Lane Schultz, Kaleb Northrup and Josh Carrier following. Schultz's second win came in the Open Pushrod class, in which he blasted his hot Harley over the top in 4.305 seconds for the win. Scott Sheets Jr. was second to Schultz with a good 4.475-second run on his Harley, with Tim Wiggins, Bill Myers and Jake Bailey filling out the top five. The Northrups had a good day. as Kaleb and Bud both claimed a win. Kaleb, now living in Woodbury, Minnesota, took the Open-class win on his classy 800cc Triumph, posting a 4.278-second run. Bill Myers ran second on his Harley in 4.564 seconds, with Sheets, Bailey and Lane Schultz taking the next three spots. Bud, the D-17 hillcllmb director, got his first win in the "Super Senile" class (for riders 50 or more years old). Riding Kaleb's CRSOO, the 59-year-old veteran topped the hill in 5.379 seconds, the only Over 50 rider to conquer the hill. Class points leader Gayle Jenkins, the youngster in the class at age 55, crashed at 123 feet for second place, while 69-year-old Charlie Casey ran third with a 108-foot effort. "Marvelous Marv" Wiemkin, age 57, took fourth, and the crowd favorite. 79-year-old (yes, I said 791) Derance Johnson placed fifth on his venerable BSA_ Results 50 AUTO: I. Oonnte Robbins (Cob); 2. AUBURN, CA, JULY 13 Fast Fridays Speedway co-promoter Dave Joiner got a taste of his own medicine when he took to the Gold Country fairgrounds' Speedway oval mounted on a 500cc Brakeless racing machine rather than his usual official Speedway Stadium golf cart. "I've been practicing on a speedway bike once in a while the past few years and just got to the point where I had to give it a try on race day," Joiner admitted after winning his initial heat race and then finishing third in the Division Three main event. "It was fun, but I think I'll probably just be sticking to my regular weekly duties the rest of the year." Finishing ahead of Joiner in the main were Rick. Gutzke and then Dave Baker, who moved into the second midway through the fivewlap finale. In the first-division main event, former National Champion Bart "Simpson" Bast lost a controversial decision in the Handicap main, officially finishing in second place. according to referee John Grant, who gave the victory to former Junior Champion Eric Carrillo despite the wild protests of the fans seated at the start/finish line. "You saw me ride off with my ann raised after I won, didn't you?" Bast adamantly asked after the race. "I didn't get him by much, but I'm sure I crossed the line first." Carrillo, who started the race from the 30yard line for the first time in his career due to last week's easy win, led the entire race and was credited with his second consecutive Handicap win aboard his He8th Specialties/ Mother's Polish/Motorwear Jawa. Chad Felicio, who started next to C8rrillo on the 30. got a poor start and finished fifth. 'Flyin'" Mike FlJria was still feeling the effects of an earlier heat-race crash and pulled off after a couple of laps; he went into the books in sixth. Bast got the best start from 50-yard line, followed by Bobby "The Blaze" Hedden and Chris Manchester, who finished third and fourth, respectively. Three-time U.S. National Speedway Champion Faria won his fourth Scratch main of the season. Bast moved off the starting line at the same moment as Faria but fell to second place when he lifted his front wheel at the line. Bast followed right on Faria's tailpipe the entire four laps but could never get around the veteran. Arguably the most interesting battle in the night's final race was between Felicio and Manchester. For the first two laps, Felicio rode like a wild man on the outside line while Manchester followed in fourth on the faster inside groove. On lap three, Manchester finally moved into third, which is where he finished, just ahead of Felicio. Danny Easley nipped Jeff Butler at the line to take an impressive win in the Junior Divi- Fast Fridays Speedway: Eric Carrillo leads Bart Bast to the line in the Handicap main event in Auburn, California; Carrillo was awarded the win by referee John Grant despite the crowd's objections_
