The gate dropped for the second moto and Dostal snagged the holeshot once again. followed by Payne and Morgan. Payne was able to stay giued to Dostal's rear fender. Payne tried to grab an inside line to pass for the lead. but Dostal was able to maintain his momen· tum on the outside of the comer to keep his slim lead. The battle for the lead approached the whoops and Payne was able to sneak to the inside of Dostal to grab the preferred line through the whoops. As Dostal and Payne exited the whoops. Payne was able to take the lead. Payne then motored out to a big lead. leaving Dostal a lonely second. When the checkered flag waved. Payne took the win. with Dostal second and Morgan third. Payne also took the overall win in the 125cc Pro class with a 1-1 sweep. with Tilley a solid second overall with a 2-2 tally and Brandon Staddan finishing third overall with 3-3 score. Arrowhead Motor Speedway Ermolenko, Hicks Top Dogs By E1..AINE JONES z SAN BERNARDINO. CA. JULY 11 The crowds get bigger and the racing gets hotter every Wednesday as Charlie "The Edge" Venegas continues to build his Wednesday night Speedway show at the new Arrowhead Motor Speedway in San Bemardino. This week, Dukie Ermolenko put together a great ride to win the Scratch main, whiJe "Gar· geous" Gary Hicks picked up the marbles on the Handicap side of the program. In the first Scratch semi. the pole went to Shawn Harmatiuk, with Bryan Yarrow in two. On the outside were Jeff Blaydes and Ennolenko. The race was all Ermolenko's. as he got the gate and the lead by the first turn. Yarrow with Harmatiuk were knocking on his door. On the last of the four laps, Harmatiuk got around Yarrow to take second and a transfer, along with Ermolenko, to the main. Yarrow and Blaydes headed to the Consi. In the second Semi, the pole went to Bobby Krips, with Jonathan Curry in two. On the outside were Hicks and Charlie Cooley. The gate went to Hicks, as did the race. Krips held on for second. Cooley and Curry headed to the Consi. The pole went to Cooley as the loaded in for the Scratch Consi. Next to him was Curry. On the outside were Yarrow and Blaydes. Cooley got away, with Yarrow in hot pursuit. On lap two. Yarrow took the lead. dropping Cooley to second. One lap later. Cooley's bike headed south and Curry took up the chase. but the win was Yarrow's, with Curry second and Blaydes third. Cooley was credited with fourth. The Scratch main had Harmatiuk on the pole. with Krips in two and Hicks and Ermolenko in three and four. On the first try. Harmatiuk got into the tapes and was sent to the pits. They loaded in again, and this time Krips got the gate, but Hicks hit the first tum running on top. Hicks and Ermolenko battled for first. As they headed for the white flag, Hicks' fuel line disconnected. Ermolenko took over the lead. Krips must have thought it was Christmas in July when he came away with second. Hicks ended up third, and Harmatiuk was credited with fourth. The Handicap main had Harmatiuk all alone on the 10·yard Une. Krips, Yarrow and Cooley shared the 20, with Hicks and Ermolenko on the 50. On the first attempt. Harmatiuk went down in one and the red flag come out. They lined up again with no penalties assessed. This time Harmatiuk outgated the front line and took the lead. Cooley and Yarrow were running second and third. Hicks moved to third by the end of two. It took him two more laps to run down Hannatiuk. but he took the lead on lap four. Ermolenko moved up with him, and the top dogs were running one-two. Cooley stayed in the hunt. and third was his. Krips and Yarrow followed. Hannatiuk picked up the final spot. Cooperiand Raceway: Robbie Smith (66) makes a statement on the start of the 125cc Novice contest in Stillwater, Oklahoma, leading Kyle Wilson (243) and Vance McGraw (423) at the opening round of the Bicycle Series. his Kawi in second in both motos. The race for third was between KTM pilots Hunter Hewitt and Jamie Siever. In moto one, Siever came out on top, with Hewitt having to come from behind to finish fourth. Moto two was a battle. but Hewitt pinned it on the downhill straight in front of the tower and passed Siever for third on the last lap. Justin Bogle rode his Kawasaki to a firstplace finish in the first 65cc (6-8) moto. Geoffrey Wooldridge pulled the holeshot on his KX but was relegated to third after first being passed by KX-mounted Connor Berg and then by Bogle. who flew by them both to take first. William Nagy got the jump on his Kawasaki in moto two but feU back to finish second, behind Bogle. Wooldridge held on to take another third-place finish. CA, JULY 7 Plano Honda/MSR-backed Billy Payne took the overall win with a 2-1 finish in the 250cc Pro class at round four of the Temecula Motorsports Hot Summer Night Series at Perris Raceway. Despite having to take a long break from the AMA/Chevy Trucks Outdoor season due to an injury-piagued year. Payne arrived ZIt Perris Raceway in great form. When the gate dropped. Jiri Dostal grabbed the holeshot. followed by Brian Morgan and Mark Tilley. Payne was running fourth. and he immediately pressured Tilley for third. Meanwhile. Dostal began to extend his lead. Payne got past Tilley by outbreaking him into a corner. Payne then set his sights on Morgan. Dostal was running very smooth and fast lap times out front. which allowed him to continue to extend his lead. Morgan began to get intense pressure from Payne. The battle approached the whoop section and Payne took Morgan's line away, making him give up second. Payne was a man on a mission as he tried to reel in Dostal for the lead.
