The Valley Trail Riders laid out a challenging 6.5mile course that consisted mostly of a tight single track. Many of the riders commented on their extreme exhaustion at the completion of the race. At any race in Gladwin County, Michigan, many of the famous Keen family will be in attendance. This year the Keens decided to dice it out in the Heavy Team classification. Eighteen teams took to the line. As the flag dropped, the Yamaha team of Ted and Tom Clark grabbed the holeshot. Once in the woods, the woods riders excelled and displaced the early leaders. After a poor start, Leonard Michael Keen was able to work through the pack and take the early lead for himseif and his 57-year-old father, Lenny. Weaving through the pack, the KTM-mounted team of Greg lott and Scott Luca were in second. FilIing in the thjrd position were series points leaders Ed Keen and Ron Balzer. Pro Action-backed Keen and Balzer seemed to be patiently waiting for their time to attack. The top riders all pitted within a lap of each other. Luca and lott garnered the lead from the father· son Keen duo. Balzer and Keen kept motoring along and also passed the father-son team. After a quick pit, the father-son Keen team made their move and regained the top spot. lott crashed, dropping the team back a few 66 AUGUST 8, 2001 • positions. At this point, Balzer and Ed Keen started to make their move to the front in hopes of continuing their wining streak. On the final lap, Balzer and Keen got the better of the father-son duo and recorded their sixth victory on the year. "My uncle Ed and my cousin Ron rode a great race, and I am happy they were first place," said the lansing Cycle/Moose/Maxima/Scott USA/Suomy-sponsored Leonard Michael Keen; "but I will tell you, nothing beats riding team with my dad." In the three-hour solo riders' division, the top rider on the day was F&S/No Fear Suzuki/Smith/Brad Lowe Racing's Blair Bersano, despite experiencing a number of problems, including a hole in his gas tank that would only allow him to make one lap before he would have to pit. Nevertheless, Bersano laid waste to the competition. Enduro Engineering/Klotz/Answer/Renthal- supported Corey Parlin seemed to have second sewed up when a late-lap bail-off cost him a position. The recipient of Parlin's gift was O'Neal-backed Aaron Wegner, who filled in the second spot when the results were posted. Fourth on this hot day was Steven's Sport Center/Shock Therapy pilot Travis Tudethout. Rounding out the top five was GNCC competitor Chris Gallt. The top Non-Expert was GSport/Torco/FMF-aided Aaron Barth, who topped the 200cc class and was seventh overall. cue I e n e _ so SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JUNE 23 On a bright, sunny day during Racing Enterprises Motorsports' weekly Saturday Motocross, there was tight racing in many classes. One of the best races turned out to be the always-interesting 250cc Beginner division, in which Kyle Eastman used the age-old formula of good starts and consistent riding to earn the overall class honors on the day. In mota one, KTM-mounted David Zetterlund pulled the holeshot in front of the 17 other competitors. David Blauser rode second, while Pete Brescin held third. Eastman and Suzuki RM250-rnounted Jacob Newlin filled out the top five. Blauser made the pass on Zetterlund for the lead just before halfway. Eastman also moved up, passing Brescin for third place. Once out front, Blauser continued mistake-free to the checkers for the moto win. Zetterlund was second best, while Eastman filled out the top three. Josh Pru.itt ripped the hoieshot in mota two. Behind him, there was a big pile-up in the first corner. Eastman escaped the carnage and slipped into second, while Terry Sizelove was third. Brescin and Kenneth Edgar filled out the top five. Pruitt was blazing·fast out front, and he opened up a five-second gap on Eastman. Late in the race, Eastman began to close on Pruitt, but he ran out of time and had to settle for second. Edgar moved up late to fill out the top three. On the day, the overall class win went to Eastman by virtue of his consistent 3-2 rides. Pruitt's strong second moto eamed him second place with a 7-1 tally, while Brescin (4-4) filled out the top three. In Over 40 Junior competition, Steve Donovan took home the first-place brass after putting in two strong motos. In the first goaround, the fast-starting Bob Barnett took the moto win. Behind him, Donovan and Tim Norton battled for most of the mota after both started near the back of the pack. Eventually, Donovan was able to gain control of the position, and when the checkers came out, he finished up in second place, just ahead of Norton. In moto two, Donovan shot out front with the holeshot. It was a sea of orange behind him, as KTM riders Greg Whitfield, Norton and Larry Waterhouse occupied second through fourth. Mike Cassell, after a long layoff due to injury, ran fifth aboard his KX250. Donovan seemed to enjoy the open track in front of him and he put a seven-second gap on the field by halfway. Whitfield was riding well in second place, just ahead of Norton. When the checkers came out, Donovan won the moto comfortably. Whitfield came in second, while Norton was third. Tom Him (Vam): 5. Rainbow Canyon Ranch MX Track Taylor Sews It Up By DICK GOODWIN ELGIN, NV, JUNE 23-24 Longtime motocrosser-turned-jet skier-tumedroad racer T.L. Taylor has, after a Rip Van Winkle-like absence, ret""rned to his motocross roots - and, apparently, he located a little of his old speed in the back of his closet, as he startled the Vet Over 30 Masters class at the Rainbow Canyon Ranch motocross track, slashing and burning his way to two victories on June 24, The track, nestled in Rainbow Canyon near Elgin, Nevada, is a soft, loamy/sandy track that gives racers a good workout. Pre-race scuttlebutt had it that the tough track might eventually slow a fast racer coming back from a long layoff. Taylor proved that he was in good shape, however, as he ripped off lap after lap at warp speed. VOR-mounted Intermediate hotshoe Jeff Murphy nailed the first-mota holeshot, ahead of another VOR pilot, Rick Polson, and then Taylor, who promptly crashed in the first corner. Jason Lopez, racing in the ] 25cc Open class, took over third, but Taylor was up quickly and charging toward the front with a vengeance. It took Taylor a couple of laps to catch and pass the speeding Murphy, but once he did, it was clear sailing to the checkers. Murphy claimed second. VOR power was on display again in the second half, as Polson and Murphy led Taylor and KTM rider Brian Kelly over the hill. Murphy made a move to take the lead, and Taylor Glen Helen Raceway Park: Kyle Eastman used good starts and consistent riding to earn the overall 250cc Beginner-class honors on the day in San Bernardino, California.
