Ryno Rocks the Road
By BART NEWMAN
BRONSON, MI, JUNE 24
American Honda factory pilot Ryan Hughes
made the short jaunt from Jeff Stanton's MX
Academy in Sherwood, Michigan. to Log Road
M.X and electrified the crowd while pushing his
CRF450R to wins in the 250cc A and Over 25
classes and the Log Road Challenge mota.
Michigan Vet rider David Gaylord put his
M+M Cycle/Weisner Suspension/Bridgestone
Tires/Scott Goggles·backed CR250 out in front
of the fast crowd by gating perfectly, leading
the field around turn one in this 20-minuteplus-one-Iap money moto. Michael Cob and
Hughes were unable to hold the inside line,
drifting wide, slowing the pack and placing
Mark Cole, Ryan Dewey and Nick Vaughn on
the ground, wishing for a restart. It took Hugh·
es less than half a lap to show Gaylord and the
rest what was written on the back of his Troy
Lee Designs jersey. Gaylord held second, with
Cob, Derek Rose, Tom Osmolowiski, Matt
Crown, Mike Island and Joe Oehlhof all trailing
Hughes by nearly 13 seconds after just one
lap. It wasn't long before "Osmo" had moved
into third, displacing both Rose and Cob.
Crown worked hard to hold off both Island and
Oehlor, who were pushing the multi·time District 14 champion hard.
On lap four, one of the front-runners
dropped out of the running when Rose's motor
went south. Osmo was now all over Gaylord's
rear fender. looking for an opening. As the two
riders jumped the ski-jump triple side by side.
Osmo held the powerful inside line to take
over second approaching the finish line.
Crown was now in fifth, behind Oehlhof, but
he was still holding off the constant charges of
Island. in sixth. One rider who was on the
move and flat out flying was Swick Kawasaki/Pro Action/FMF/Thor·backed Nick Vaughn,
who was taken down in turn one but had
clawed his way back inside the top 10 by the
halfway point.
With the two· lap board out. Hughes had
such a lead that he stopped by the side of the
track to do a quick check on the rear end of
the Honda CRF450R. one of only four working
prototypes in the USA. Osmo was second but
was slowly being reeled in by Oehlhof, and
Gaylord was a solid fourth. Crown was fifth,
forced to ride defensively as Island was hanging close enough to challenge. As the check·
ered flag waved, Hughes took a convincing
win with more than a minute to spare. Osmo
was second, with Oehlhof bearing down, mak·
ing it a race coming home just short to nab
third. Gaylord was next in line, followed by
Crown, Island and Vaughn, who was busting
his butt to the end, placing seventh and first
125 despite starting out dead last after picking
up his KX after a first·turn get·off.
At day's end, the line at Ryno's box van
was still going strong, as the day's big winner
of the lion's share of the S J J 00 purse, cour·
tesy of Albion Ford and Winners' Circle Yama·
ha, happily signed everything in Sight.
Fast Fridays Speedway
Manchester
Manhandles Fridays
By M. SOBER AND W. BAST
AUBURN, CA, JUNE 29
Chris Manchester won his first Handicap main of
the 2001 Gold Country Fairgrounds Speedway
season, and then topped off his night by taking
his second Scratch main of the season to complete the first main-event sweep of the year.
"Boy, you gotta love this track again
tonight: Manchester said. "Maybe I should
thank the sidecars for that Scratch main win; if
they hadn't blown all the dirt off the track in
their main event, I think Mike may have got
around the outside and won it himself."
Manchester was, of course, referring to
Mike Faria. who. despite an all-out effort on
the outside line. came up short and had to settle for second.
Bart Bast drew lane two for the main, got a
decent gate and traveled even with Faria in the
opening laps but ended up finishing thjrd when
Faria dropped down from his outside line
between the leader, Manchester, and himself.
Bobby Hedden spun coming out of lane three
and, despite running close to the leaders. he
didn't find the needed traction to overtake the
leaders and rolled across the line in fourth.
The New Zealand/American Sidecars
made their annual appearance and didn't fail
to entertain the sellout crowd. The veteran
team of Duane Carmont and Richard Taling
pulled away to win their main, ahead of early
race leaders Joe Jones and Brandi McElroy.
Typically, the race took a couple of attempts
before being completed. In the first try, pas·
senger McElroy came off her rig after some
excessive bumping and was subsequently run
over by the sidecar team directly behind her.
After shaking out the cobwebs, the tough side·
car swinger remounted. restarted and finished
in the runner-up position.
Longtime all-purpose motorcycle racer
Paul Orlandi won the Backwards Speedway
Bike finale over Vance Felicio and speedway
legend Harlan Bast.
In the Handicap main, former Junior
champion Eric Carrillo won the battle with fellow 20-yard-line starter Orlandi and assumed
the early race lead. As Carrillo and Orlandi
skirmished up front, 40·yard man Manchester
and his 50·yard colleague Bast were quickly
moving toward the front. Just after the last-lap
flag waved, Manchester dislodged the young·
ster and took over the leadership and subsequent victory of the night's busiest race. Bast
followed suit in the final turns, claiming second and pushing Carrillo back to third_ Orlandi
managed to hold on to fourth, ahead of Hed·
den and Chad Felicia.
J.J. Martynse. who also rode in a first-division Handicap heat race, once again dominated the second-division main. taking his third
win of the season. The third-division main
went to Mike Achilles, ahead of David Baker,
who also finished second in last week's main.
The first-division Junior main was called after
a couple of laps when Greg Hooton, who was
involved in a battle for the race lead with Mark
Carrillo, fell, taking Danny Easley and T.J.
Fowler with him. Carrillo was declared the victor.
Jay Ricketts won the busy Division Two
Junior finale, and Mitchell Johnson won his second consecutive Division Three Junior main.

Kruger came
away with his second win at round four of the
Forward Motion Hare Scrambles Series in Fort
Scott. Kansas.
On the start of the combined AA and A class·
es. Brad Jones took the holeshot Kruger pushed
his way past in the following sweeper. Gas Gas
riders Adrian Bryant and Shane Dipasquale bat·
tled for third. Dipasquale got pushed off the trail.
and John Charlson and Leigh Letellier squeezed
by. Letellier used his Letko Cycles' SX400 to
blast into third, behind Jones. A minute later.
Letellier passed Jones in a ditch crossing and
was soon hounding the
leader, Kruger.
In the meantime,
Bryant stalled his bike and
Charlson crashed trying to
get by. Dipasquale used
Charlson's KX as a ramp.
Nathan Looney was also
moving up through the
pack, moving into fourth.
behind Jones.
Before the first lap was
over, Kruger let Letellier by.
"I spent all day yester·
day cutting tree limbs and
putting up arrows," Letelli·
er said later. "Mike was just
showing his appreciation
for all the work we put in."
With Letellier leading
and Kruger in second,
Jones fell in a rocky sec·
tion and dropped back.
Looney put his YZ into
third, with Dipasquale in
fourth.
On lap two. Letellier
was leading when he
grabbed too much throttle
in a muddy sweeper and
crashed hard. With l..etelli·
er out of the race, Renthal/Thor·sponsored Doug
Stone put his KX 125 into
second after passing the
entire pack. With each
lap, Stone whittled away
at Kruger's lead. Stone got
by Kruger momentarily,
only to lose the strap on
his camelback. It took
Stone four minutes to
straighten that out, as he
had to take off his helmet
and chest protector to get
to the strap. With Kruger
Fort Scott Hare Scramble Park: Gas Gas rider Shane
long gone, Stone was able
Dipasquale wheelies to fourth overall at round four of the
to get past Dipasquale and
Forward Motion Hare Scrambles Series in Fort Scott, Kansas.
Looney to finish second,
one minute behind Kruger.
