over the bars and losing valuable time. Forrester and Leivan then closed in on Shaw. Shaw bobbled while trying to pass a slower rider and center-punched a tree, allowing Forrester to take over, while Shaw got going just in front of Leivan, and the two riders swapped positions a couple of times, with Shaw coming out on top. Shaw then passed Forrester for the lead, although Forrester was back in front by lap's end. Leivan checked in nearly 20 seconds back, with Hemann in fourth. Duncan suffered another getoff but still held fifth. On lap four, things started to come apart for Shaw, who had handling problems. Leivan passed him and set out after Forrester, while Shaw just tried to keep going forward. Forrester swung into the pits for a splash of fuel heading into the final lap. Leivan took the lead, but Forrester caught back up and chose a faster line through a rutted hillside to retake the lead. Leivan glued himself to Forrester's rear tire, looking for a mistake or opportunity. That opportunity came in one of the areas that had been rerouted earlier. "They had changed the course the lap before and had us going wide around a cedar tree," Leivan recounted. "I made a straighter line by ducking my head and going to the inside." Forrester hung close and took another shot at the lead late in the lap. "I went the same way through the last mudhole that I had been going all day, but there was a guy stuck in the rut I was in," Forrester reported. "I had to jerk to bike out of it and lost some time." Leivan upped the pace. As he entered the final grass track that led to the finish, he looked back and couldn't see Forrester, and knew that the win was his. With his fist in the air and his pit crew cheering loudly, Leivan put his 59th career victory in the books and set his sights on an unprecedented ninth overall championship. Forrester finished off a great ride in second and that result, combined with his win at the opener, gave him the points lead. Hemann was able to reel in a struggling Shaw on the final lap and take the final podium position away during the last mile of the race. Shaw finished fourth, despite his problems. Nesbitt and Mike Windmann raced to the finish for fifth and sixth. The top A rider on the day was Kevin Borts, in seventh overall.
