Leon Backus Memorial Race Moroso Motorsports Parle Prieto Takes Five Bv LISA THEOBALD WEST PALfII BEACH, Fl, MAR. 18 ustom Glass Company's Shane Prieto won five races during the 11 th annual Leon Backus Memorial event, finishing first in the GTO, GTU, Middleweight Supersport, Heavyweight Supersport an-d Unlimited Grand Prix races. He also finished second in Unlimited Supersport competition. Marco Martinez and Keith Galias were the event's secondbiggest Expert winners, with two victories each; Martinez won Unlimited Supersport and Heavyweight Superbike, and Galias finished first in GT Lights and Lightweight Superbike. Richard Herrington II was the event's top Amateur winner, with three firstplace finishes: in GT Lights, lightweight Superbike and Lightweight Supersport. During the Unlimited Grand Prix, Carlos Macias won the holeshot. Martinez quickly maneuvered up front on the second lap, while Prieto advanced to third place, behind Macias. With John Ashmead close behind, there C was an early four-rider breakaway battle for the lead. By the third lap, Prieto had moved up, swapped positions with Martinez, and then swapped back again. The top three riders continuously passed each other in the fight for the lead. At the end of lap four, Martinez was in first, followed by Macias, Prieto and Ashmead, with a tremendous gap over the rest of the pack. With just one lap to go, Martinez crashed out of the race after an encounter with a lapped rider. Prieto then repassed Macias and reclaimed the lead. He finished ahead of Macias and Ashmead. David Mcintyre and Jim Pihokken rounded off the top five. Competition between Prieto and Martinez is usually intense, providing lots of exciting racing action. All throughout the event, the two fought for track domination. Prieto won the GTO after passing early leader Martinez, but halfway through the race, Prieto closed the door on Martinez. The two ran side by side down the front straight, with Martinez pulling away with the advantage. Prieto Moroso Motorsports Park: Shane Prieto won five races at the Leon Backus Memorial event In West Palm Beach, Florida. 60 APRil 18, 2001 • cue • e n e _ s moved in and not only passed Martinez on the next lap but opened up a gap on him. On the final lap, Prieto had about a 15-bike lead over Martinez, and he doubled that distance by the time he took the checkered flag. Martinez, Pihokken, Ashmead and Mauro Cereda completed the top five. Prieto took the early led in the GTU and started to walk away from the rest of the pack. Martinez moved up to second on lap two and began to open up a gap of his own. However, Prieto was really pulling away. Halfway through the race, Prieto, Martinez and Mcintyre were leading. Bryce Lawmaster had moved up to fourth and Kevin Lacombe was hot on his tail. Martinez dropped back and pulled off the track with mechanical trouble. With only one lap to go, Prieto was out front, all by himself. At the finish, it was Prieto with a runaway win, ahead of Mcintyre, Lacombe, Lawmaster and Greg Esser. Prieto seized another early lead in Middleweight Supersport. Chris Cummings fought to hold on to second place, but John Waters moved up and closed in. On the white-flag lap, Tom Pfuner was up to second after passing underneath Cummings and pushing him wide through turn two. Prieto finished the race far ahead of the others. Waters turned on the power and passed Pfuner at the start/finish line to claim second place by a wheel. Cummings and Pedro Valiente finished just behind them. Prieto was out front again in Heavyweight Supers port, letting the rest of the pack go to battle behind him - again. With just a few laps to go, Martinez worked his way up to third and set his sights on Mcintyre. On the next lap, the two ran side by side, with Mcintyre holding on to the advantage. On the final lap, Martinez maneuvered his machine into second place. Prieto finished without challenge, followed by Martinez, Mcintyre, Scott Ritchey and Brett Ray. Pihokken nabbed the Unlimited Supers port holeshot, but the end of lap one was led by Eric Gray, with Prieto, Martinez, Mcintyre and Patrick Weekley in hot pursuit. Before he could complete the second lap, Gray tossed his machine away in the turnthree chicane. He re-entered the race in last place and started to move forward. Prieto was out front now, with a huge lead over Martinez. Weekley gained the advantage over Mcintyre, passing him in the front chicane to take over third. Meanwhile, Gray's machine was in need of repair, and he dropped out of the race. With only one lap to go, Martinez passed Prieto and held on to the advantage across the start/finish line for the final time. Prieto, Weekley, Mcintyre and Pihokken finished in order. Later, Prieto crashed out of the Middleweight Superbike race after running away again with a huge, huge lead over second place early in the race.
