LA - 125cc 03/15/01 03/17/01 03/20/01 03/23/01 CMC Northwest Winter Series Round 8: Forster Uvestock Pavilion Connaghan,Leach Collect Salem Wins by Arai Supersport by Arai Supersport ESPN2 Speed ESPN2 CLAY LIGHT SALEM, OR, FEB. 23-24 amaha riders Devin Connaghan and Ryan Leach each collected two class wins during the final CMCsanctioned arena cross inside the Forster Livestock Pavilion at the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem. Connaghan topped the Before The Hill and 250cc Pro classes on Friday night, while Leach scored convincing wins in the 250cc and Open Pro classes at round eight of the CMC Northwest Winter Series. The series' final two rounds now move outdoors to the Albany Motorsports Park. Connaghan bolted to the front of the field at the unleashing of the first Before The Hill Pro/Intermediate moto, followed by Aaron Tunnell, Brody Baxter and Justin Jensen. Connaghan, one of the two Professional riders in the field, maintained the point position to the finish, ahead of a three-way battle for second between Tunnell, Baxter and the second Pro rider, Keith Kadell. Tunnell edged out the duo for the secondplace laurels. Baxter got the holeshot in moto two, but the Yamaha rider from central Oregon would only enjoy the lead momentarily. as both Connaghan and Tunnell swept past Baxter. Kadell, who suffered from poor starts all evening, charged from the tail end to settle behind Baxter at moto's end. although he was unable to make a pass stick and was relegated to fourth, behind the overall winner, Connaghan (1-1); Tunnell (2-2); and Baxter (3-3). Kadell (4-4) and Jensen (5-5) rounded out the top five. Connaghan came back several motos later to trounce the field of 250cc Pro/Intermediate contestants. polishing off the competition with his second successive 1- 1 sweep to earn the Power Yamaha-backed rider one of the few double-class wins on the evening. Eric Rogers and Baxter finished second and third. Kawasaki rider Travis McClinton and Cobra-mounted Andy DiBrino had similar success. McClinton's wins came in the 60cc Senior (9-11) and 60cc Open classes, while DiBrino scored the Pee Wee (4-6) and 50cc Open victories. DiBrino trailed KTMmounted Justin Spink in the first Pee Wee (4-6) moto, but DiBrino turned the tables in moto two and scored a convincing win to notch the overall, ahead of Spink (1-2) and Sierra Y Bragg (4-3) in the II-rider field. McClinton's closest competition all evening came from his twin brother, Tyler, also Kawasaki-mounted. Tyler trailed his fast-starting brother in all four motos to garner a set of runnerup laurels in both 60cc classes. Tyler Riehl netted third overall in both classes to the riders from Albany, Oregon. Honda-mounted Ryan Huege has seldom met defeat this season, but the Yamhill, Oregon, rider had tough competition in the Before The Hill Junior class from Cory Johnson, who led much of moto one until Huege overcame a poor start and nabbed Johnson on the final lap to score a win. Johnson jumped out front in moto two, posting a win over Matt Crawford and Huege. However, Huege came back to trounce the competition in the 125cc Junior class. Yamaha rider Mike Taylor manhandled the competition in the Over 40 class, putting his Yamaha YZ426F well ahead of the rest of the field in both motos. This earned Taylor the top payoff in the Money class. Finishing behind Taylor in both motos was Honda rider Jay Loudagin, winner of the Amateur portion, ahead of Curtis Paulson (3-2) and Grant Brown (2-3). On Saturday, Leach leveled the Professional-class competition, posting I-I wins in the 250cc and Open Pro classes aboard his Herb's Cycletown/House of Horsepower-backed Yamahas. Leach left Suzuki rider J.R. Vielle and Connaghan to duke it out for the table scraps, with Vielle (2-2) netting the second-place money ahead of Connaghan (3-3). Vielle posted the overall win in the competitive Before The Hill Pro/Intermediate class, splitting wins with former minicycle speedster Tyler Fick. Though Fick won moto one, Vielle earned the moto-two laurels, ahead of Suzuki rider Jason Staley, the second overall finisher with a 4-2 score, ahead of Fick (1-5), Connaghan (3-4) and Jensen (5-3)_ Glenn Prestholt Jr. won the Husqvarna 50cc Challenge, edging David Paschke for the honor during the race sponsored by Bill's Motorcycles, the local Husqvarna dealer. With Prestholt's win, the rider from Keizer now maintains a slim advantage in the points standings - much aided by tonight's double points - over Paschke and Spink, the second- and third-place finishers.
