Woodland Motocross Park Marion Fairgrounds Coliseum Marion Fairgrounds Coliseum Anudder Mudder at Woodland Vintage MX Baker Cooks Indoors A Throng of Nathans By CLAY By RUPERT X. PELlETT WOODLAND, WA, JAN. 13 Starters were many but finishers were few at the latest in a series of vintage and evolution motocross events at Woodland Motocross Park. Just under 200 riders were on hand for round four of th~ Northwest Vintage and Evolution Motocross Series, an event which was hampered by extensive precipitation. Among the day's top performers was Husqvarna-mounted Bryson Williams. The Oregonian was one of the select few doublemoto winners on the day. Williams walloped the competition in the I 25cc Amateur Vintage class, in which he led Honda rider Kevin Krashear and Hodaka pilot Nick Chapman into the top three in the increasingly popular class. Krashear (3-3) and Chapman (5-2) were the next most consistent riders in the DNFplagued class. CZ-mounted Chris Clark has been the dominant force in the Open Expert Vintage class all season long, and today was much the same for the Portland, Oregon, rider, although instead of the normally brutal competition, Clark's win aboard his 1973 CZ 400 came uncontested. Clark was the only finisher of the six riders in the combined Expert/Intermediate class. The 250cc Amateur Vintage class had its fair share of entrants. However, only three riders finished in the quagmire. CZ-mounted Lorin Smith and Bultaco jockey Travis Ankerberg traded moto wins in the soupy condi· tions, but Ankerberg stayed upright the longest to post a moto-two victory and nab the overall win via 2-1 placings. Smith (1-2) finished second overall, ahead of CZ rider Reid Saario Jr. (6-3), who rounded out the top three. Thanks to more contemporary suspension, there was a much greater rate of finishers in the 250cc Evolution Amateur class. Of the eight riders entered, seven finished both motos. The top performer, Josh Waring, hammered the competition aboard his 1979 Honda CR250. Waring's win came by virtue of his 2-1 placings, topping Yamaha rider Rick Pickner (1-2). Rob Covel (3-3), Ed Storm (4-4) and Doug Durkin (6-6) filled out the top five overall. Honda-mounted Joe Casey has enjoyed a lengthy domination in Expert-class action this season. Riding a I 980 Honda CR250, Casey sloshed his way to a win in the sparsely-contested 250cc Evolution Expert class with a 1- I sweep to finish ahead of Washington's c.J. "Siege" James. Yamaha rider Charlie Martin, the lone Intermediate rider, trailed the duo for a win in his class. Results Coby (K.w). Results. 230 C: I. Rustie Goddard (Yem): 2. Todd Ebersole (Hon); 3. Glen Helen Raceway Park Hall Calls the Shots at Glen Helen Mud-In By Baa AllaY SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JAN. 13 A day of heavy rains bestowed Glen Helen with lots and lots of mud - gooey, messy, slippery stuff that made practice a danger zone at the first ROTMX race of the year. Mark Hall got out in front of the pack and set a fast pace for all the other Master A racers, controlling the race for two laps until he was overtaken by Dennis Boulware. Hall hung in there, pushing hard, but he couldn't regain his lead and ended up following Boulware across the checkers. The second time around, Boulware was out in front with the holeshot and he dominated the track until Hall upset things with a lastlap pass for the moto win and the overall. Boulware ended up second. Ben Johansso was flying on his KTM, and none of the other Master B racers could better rum. He crossed over with a big win, leaving Steve Donaldson with second. In the second mota, a fast-moving Tom White whittled away at Johansso's lead and muscled past him on the last lap for the victory. Johansso was second. Birtles stayed close behind, checking in with second, and Michael Neal secured third. In the Amateur Over 40 class, Ray Simmons was the early leader for five laps until Kawasaki jockey Bill Bouman ripped' past. Bouman was then outpaced by an even faster Larry Fisher, who took first. Bouman owned second, and Simmons crossed over in third. In moto two, Honda-mounted Simmons was pursued by a fast Bruce Young, right there at his rear fender. Young made the pass on lap two and didn't let up until the race was won. Simmons and Terry Tak occupied second and third. Barry Simon nailed the first Amateur Over 50 moto holeshot and controlled the lead for two laps. Then Billy Addington maneuvered past and took over the action for the win. Dennis Rosenberg moved quickly through traffic to claim second. Simon picked up third. Ken Beach got off to a great start in moto two, but unfortunately he stalled his Yamaha on lap two, giving RosenMarlon Fairgrounds Coliseum: Gavin Gracyk won berg the lead, which he held to the the 250cc B class In Marlon, Ohio. finish. Addington and Jack Garland placed second and third.
