Competition Park Bootsma Gives 'em the Boot By JOHN BETHEA March I 8, 100 I SAN JACINTO, CA, FEB. 2 Tony Bootsma rode a Kawasaki to the tightly competitive 125cc Beginner-class victory at the second round of Competjtion Park's No Fear Clothing Race Series, highlighting the only Friday night motocross program in Southern California. There were three different moto winners in the class of a dozen racers. That's right - three! That is because Competition Park has gone back a quarter of a century to the original motocross format of racing three motos for every class every week, which was the norm until 1975, when the two-moto format was instituted to give riders longer races. "We still give longer races, too" says the park's general manager, former pro motocross racer Ron Turner, "five or six laps per race, per round, which has been very popular with the riders. We're aiming to re-insti- tute Friday night as the kickoff for weekend warriors, which established such tracks as Ascot Park, Corona Raceway, Irwindale Race- way and Indian Dunes as the top night tracks in the Southland years ago." Turner - the winningest pro motocross rider ever in America, with more than 700 documented victories - hooked on with the facility nestled at the foot of Mount San Jacinto last fall and has now added a completely new speedway/TT flat-track course, in addition to a separate Pee Wee track. The entire facility is now open daily for practice. Bootsma joined Yamaha riders Ryan Hughes and Blake Wade as moto winners in the 125cc Beginners, but his more-consistent performances garnered the overall. He fin- ished third in the first race, behind Hughes and Yamaha rider Justin Mills, and then won the middle moto and finished up in second place, behind Wade, in the third. Steven Perry spent nearly half the first moto and almost two laps of the third in the lead, only to be caught and passed by Mintz. Chris Davis, who rides a Yamaha spon~ sored by the L.A. i looked like he was County Fire Department, going to burn up the 80cc ~ Beginners when he won the first race, taking ~ over the lead from Chad Nye on the third lap. : But that debt was repaid in the second moto i1:when Nye passed Davis midway through, set- C. ting up a tie-breaking third-moto showdown. (, In that one, Nye took early command and : rode his TMC Racing Honda to the overall. Despite taking a Friday night off due to heavy rains, the No Fear Clothing Series wiil stili go the full six events. "We'll just finish up a week later than expected," stated Turner. "And don't forget, every entry gets a drawing ticket each week for No Fear clothing or other items to be given away in addition to the series' prizes." Results P/W (4.6); l. Luke Gutierrez (KTM): 2.
