Jarrett Tipping got the first 250cc/Open A moto holeshot. Behind him were Joshua Sweat, Paul Perebijnos, Derek Rose and Bill Ryan. Perebijnos passed Sweat on lap two and set off after Tipping. By the end of lap three, Perebijnos had taken command; he pulled out a few bike lengths and was never challenged. After a sixth-piace start, Karsten Butler worked his way up to fourth. By halfway, the race tightened for third. Butler dived to the inside after the finish-iine jump and took third. Butler put the pressure on Tipping on the last lap but couldn't make the pass. Sweat and Rose rounded out the top five. In moto two, Butler got what he wanted - the holeshot. Sweat, Perebijnos, Rose and Tipping followed. Butler led the entire moto. Perebijnos' overall was on the line, and he had to finish behind Butler or win. Perebijnos soon passed Sweat for second, but he could never mount a challenge for the lead. Tipping had passed Rose and was right on Sweat. Sweat faltered in the first turn and Tipping went by. Rose took advantage of the situation and also got by Sweat. Rose soon got back by Tipping and tried to reel in Perebijnos. Sweat dropped out with a couple of laps to go, moving Ryan and Shawn Nutt up to fifth and sixth. Nutt passed Ryan on the last lap, next to the starting line, and the order stayed the same to the checkers. Matt Goerke and Robert Kiniry battled in the first 85cc (14-15) moto. They were only feet apart until Kiniry encountered problems and settled for second. Alan Cliburn, Cody Walker and Shane Carlton rounded out the top five. Moto two was led by Matt Pedrero off the start, but Goerke was soon' in 52 FEBRUARY 21,2001 • cue I e the lead. Kiniry did not start, so Goerke ran away with the win. Walker started third but dropped to seventh by the end. Cliburn started fourth and worked his way around Pedrero for second. Ashley Jones and Carlton rounded out the top five. The 125cc C class had a turnout of 60 riders, requiring qualifiers to thin the field to 40. The holes hot in the final went to Jonathan West. Bradley Bernier started third but was soon in second, pressuring West. Following the two were Sid Boughton and Shaun Skinner. Bernier jumped to the inside of turn one and came out the leader. Bernier slowly pulled away for the win. After the halfway mark, West had company behind him. Boughton and Skinner switched positions and were on West's tail. Skinner passed West before the step-up, and then set out after Bernier, but he didn't have enough time. Boughton passed West on the last lap for third. In the 125cc Pro class, Tyson Hadsell had to come from sixth to get the first-moto win. Perebijnos was the early leader, but he dropped to fifth. Coming home behind Hadsell were Tony Lorusso, Barry Carsten and Troy Adams. The second moto was all Hadsell's. Adams started in second and finished there. Michael Sigmund started third but dropped to eighth. After a bad start, Lorusso moved up to take third. Carsten was fourth and Jon Logan was fifth. eN Thunder Cross Motorsports Park Okeechobee, Florida Resul1s: January 21, 2001 (Round 41 P/W (4-6): 1. Marisa HI.lmpshire (Kaw); 2. Broadbent Arena Louisville Sluggo By MIKE NICHOLS In the 250cc Pro main, Metcalf absconded with the holeshot and ran away with a commanding lead. As he checked out, the only real race was for second, between Chester, Katin and Baker. After battling in each comer, the threesome crossed the finish line in the same order, followed by LCR/So. Cal./Pirelli's Davey Yezek in fifth. Friday's Extreme Jump Off was a showdown between Sluggo Gessner, Spencer Hill, Aaron Dieter and Dusty McDonald. After two high-flying tricks from each rider, Gessner's sideways pancake took the win. Saturday's nearly soldout crowd didn't leave disappointed. The show started with five nail-biting 125cc Pro qualifiers. Only the top two finishers of the 10 riders in each qualifier would move on to the Pro main event. Many Intermediate and Beginner classes also ran on Saturday between the Pro qualifiers and heat races. There were four 250cc qualifiers; only the top four fastest riders from each and the three fastest from the last-chance qualifier would go to the main. The 125cc Pro Main was a battle between Chester and Metcalf. The two riders swapped back and forth for the lead until SU2ukimounted Chester came out on top at the checkered flag. FollOWing the top two were Katin, Yezek and Brian Mason. Metcalf absconded with the holeshot in the 250cc Pro main and, just as in Friday's 250cc race, he pulled away with a commanding lead. Katin battied Chester for second; the two were wheel to wheel, and with two laps to go, Chester made his way past Katin to take the runner-up position. Coming in a close fourth was Honda-mounted Brockman, followed by Yezek. Saturday's Extreme Jump Off was even more exciting than Friday's high-fiying show. Hill amazed the crowd with a no-footed cancan lander. Many more amazjng jumps ensued. When the spectators cheered for their favorite jumper, Sluggo Gessner had his second winning night. The Suzuki rider jumped out in front of his qualifier and dominated throughout, but ·on lhe final lap he attempted to shoot between two lappers on the catapult jump and came up short and cased hard on the landing, injuring his wrist. Riddle rounded the final two corners and won the qualifier but had to sit out the remainder of the weekend.
