STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARIO CANDELLONE TORlN, ITALY, JAN. 21 utdoor World Trials Champion Dougie Lampkin proved that he is equally adept in the confines of an Italian stadium, taking the win and establishing himself as the man to beat for the title. In front of more than 5000 fans in the capital of the Piemonte region in northwest Italy, Lampkin turned in a Sunday performance that redeemed the defeat of the night before (which didn't count for World points, anyhow), winning by a massive margin. The Sunday event (and all of the World Indoor rounds) was reserved for the top six riders from the outdoor circuit. Lampkin has won all four rounds thus far. In all, there were six sections, plus the "high-jump" and the "parallel." In the high-jump section, there were four bars placed at different height: each of them associated with a trials score. Riders had to jump the bars, earning zero through five points (zero being best) depending upon how high they went. The last to face the sections, Lampkin had the advantage of knowing his rivals' scores, and he cleaned section one, In the parallel section, two riders which had been fived by both at a time raced through a small whoop section, then returned and reached the top of a wooden plat- Cabestany and Freixa. Even before form. The loser got a point. The other sections were more similar to an outdoor trial. Section one was on huge cement cylinders and cubes. Two and three were on big rocks and stones. Four was on enormous logs, some placed vertically, with riders jumping from one to another. Five was a big wall, quite inclined at different angles, and the last section a four-step waterfall (the first step was about four feet high). The sections were more difficult for Sunday's trial than they had been for the show-only Saturday competition. In the heats, Brit Steve Colley had a poor performance, contrasted by the excellent ride turned in by Spaniard Albert Cabestany. Upcoming Round Round 5 - Barcelona, Spain, February 4 BRIEFLY••• The Turin organizers and arena have changed over the years. but never the winning lonnula: a Saturday "introduction competition - and a Sunday World round. The chief promoter over the last few years. Gianni Albertazzi. did a great job of publicizing the event. so on both the days he enjoyed a full house. Spaniard Marc Freixa was riding strong. and his spectacular style eamed him the support of the crowd (which found Dougie Lampkin's precise riding a bit boring). Freixa pulled off the formidable task of defeating Lampkin (though he did so in Saturday's non·points competition). and his performance pushed the crowd into a frenzy. Freixa and Lampkin actually tied. and the time spent to clear the sections had to be used as a tie breaker. Freixa's 'fast and dirty" approach gave him the advantage. here. After each day's competition was a BMT bicycle-triels exhibition. with Spanish multi-time champion Ot Pi and Cesare Canana doing the honors.
