Chaparral Pro-Am Glen Helen Raceway Park (Left) At the three-elay Chaparral Pro·Am event in San Bemardlno, Califomia, Angle Keunt;es (67) battled Jackl Hudson (73) for most of Sunday's motocross contest and came away victorious, taking the overall Women's Intermediate win. (Below) Sheer determination paid off for Sean Collier (here racing In the Grand Prix on Saturday), who won the 250cc Intermediate crown at Glen Helen Raceway Park. By BETH AND BOB LARoCK PHOTOS BY BETH LAROCK SAN BERNARDINO, CA, DEC. 29-31 CJ?he fifth annual Chaparral Pro-Am U brought riders from across the country to Glen Helen Raceway for three days of stiff competition. On day one the riders competed on the Stadiumcross track, day two was a 45-minute Grand Prix, and day three consisted of two motos on Glen Helen's National motocross track. Rising to the challenge with a clean sweep was Angie Keuntjes, who traveled from Ocala, Florida, for the event and dominated all three types of racing. The first moto on the Stadiumcross track was especially challenging for Keuntjes, who battled with Jacki Hudson. A hard crash on lap five took Hudson out of contention, allowing Keuntjes to finish first. Tamra Madden and Bonnie Warch took second and third. YZ426F -mounted Heidi Henry seized the second-moto holeshot, but a snapped chain finished her moto early. Keuntjes charged into the lead and captured her second win of the day. Warch cruised in second and claimed second overall on her 125cc Suzuki. On day two, Warch claimed the holeshot, in front of Henry and Keuntjes. Warch held the lead for several laps and then fell behind Keuntjes and Henry. Keuntjes captured the win, with Henry and Warch following. In day three's motocross contest, Henry claimed another holeshot but then crashed coming down Animal Leap. Hudson took over the lead, with Tarrah Johnson in second and Keuntjes in third. Johnson crashed and Keuntjes moved into second, and set her sights on Hudson. For the next three laps, Hudson and Keuntjes did battIe, with Keuntjes taking the lead during the white-flag lap. "Jacki [Hudson] used the whole track - every line out there," Keuntjes laughed. "Hopefully, [in the] next one I'll get a clean start instead of having to do that." Keuntjes got the start she wanted for the second moto, but Hudson dogged her the entire moto. However, Keuntjes kept her cool to the finish. Hudson claimed second and Henry seized third. of racing took a toll on his flu-stricken body and he fell behind quickly. Collier took the Grand Prix win, and Eide claimed second. The two riders were tied for first overall going into the motocross competition. On day three, Collier got an uncharacteristically bad start in the first moto, resulting in a sixth-place finish. Eide was second through the holeshot turn but finished third, behind Richie Owens. The first-moto winner was James Marshall. Although Mace claimed the second-moto holeshot, Collier quickly took the lead. Collier captured the second-moto win, giving him the overall for the Pro-Am. Eide finished the moto in fifth, placing him two points behind Collier for second overall. The Pro-Am also marked the return of Mike Alessi, who broke both legs and a foot earlier in the year. "The first time [back on a bike], I felt really stiff and my bones did not feel the same," Alessi admitted. "I didn't go too fast. Now I'm back to where I was before." Alessi made a clean sweep of the 80cc (4-11) class in all events. Alessi's brother Jeff, who broke both his legs about three weeks after Mike, was also back on track, making a clean sweep of the 60cc (9-11) class. Their father, Tony, admitted that having two kids with broken legs constituted "the hardest three months I can remember." CN "Jacki was right behind me the whole race," Keuntjes said, exhausted but happy. "It was good. I got the holeshot and focused on the front. I'm glad I came all this way." The 250cc Intermediate class was very competitive on all three days. Sean Collier showed the value of determination. Collier started the first Stadiumcross moto in fourth but worked his way through crashed riders to take the win. Justin Mace took second, and Jeff Eide came in third. In moto two, Eide was dominant from holeshot turn to finish line. Mace crashed on a jump coming out of the third turn, and Collier, unable to get clear of Mace, also hit the dirt. Both riders recovered and Collier finished in sixth, Mace in seventh. At the end of day one, Eide held first overall, and Collier and Mace were positioned in second and third. Although Collier felt confident at the start of the Grand Prix, he was concerned that his bike would run out of gas during the 45-minute event. After having to push his bike back to the pits in the past, Eide had installed a larger gas tank on his bike. Eide started the Grand Prix strong and distanced himself from Josh Stice and Collier, who battled through four laps. Then Collier made his move, passing Stice and closing in on Eide. It took Collier two more laps to pass Eide; then Collier distanced himself from the rest of the pack.
