Superbowl of Motocross Series Round 9: Monster Mountain Motocross Monk, Fisher Hook Monster Wins By STEVE AND PEGGY COR LEE TALLASSEE,AL,DEC.2 D errick Fisher and Jon Boy Monk were the overall winners at round nine of the Superbowl of Motocross Series at Monster Mountain. This was the penultimate round, and the points spread in many classes was only one or two, resulting in some fierce battles and some very unexpected results, especially in the Pro divisions. Alabama's Clark Stiles and Florida's Jarrett Tipping were locked in a tight battle for top honors in both classes, and they fought tooth and nail all day long. A crash involving the two front-runners in the first 250cc Pro moto put an end to Tipping's bid for the overall on the day and likely the series overall as well, while Stiles fared only slightly better. Promoter Gary Blackwell and Greg Cole's Southern Dirt crew worked hard to prepare the racetrack for the event, and conditions were perfect. In the 125cc Pro class, Fisher, fresh from a successful campaign in the Canadian Nationals, played the spoiler in the battle between Stiles and Tipping. In the first moto, Stiles grabbed the lead ahead of Fisher and Tipping. As these three stretched out a gap over the rest of the pack, Fisher began to pressure Stiles for the lead. Monk, who at first enjoyed a seemingly safe fourth place, came under pressure from Michigan's Randy Valade and finally yielded the spot with two laps to go. The 50 JANUARY 10, 2001 • .. U c I e Stiles/Fisher battle continued to the checkers, with Stiles taking the win ahead of Fisher, Tipping, Valade and Monk. Stiles again took the lead off the gate in moto two. Fisher moved into second after the pack sorted out. A tremendous battle ensued between Stiles and Fisher for several laps, with Fisher taking over the lead with two laps to go. Stiles tried every trick to regain the lead but time ran out, and Fisher took the checkers. Tipping moved up to pressure Stiles in the late stages but couldn't make the pass. Fourth again went to Valade, and Monk followed in fifth. The first 250cc Pro moto began as expected, with Tipping taking the holeshot on a Yl426F, which he chose to ride rather than his usual 250cc two-stroke_ Stiles followed on his KTM 250 instead of his usual 520cc four-stroke. Valade trailed in third. Stiles moved ahead of Tipping at midrace, and the two engaged in a terrific battle for the lead, with Stiles taking the flag first. Tipping took a close second, with Valade third, Fisher fourth and Monk fifth. Race two began with a holeshot by Monk, while Tipping and Stiles were mired midpack. By the third lap, however, the dynamic duo had displaced Monk and Valade, and they began to pull away from the pack. A battle ensued between the two that not only would decide the day's overall but quite possibly for the entire series as well. On the white-flag lap, Tipping made his move on the finish·line uphill. When the two cleared the uphill jump, they collided in midair and both riders went down, handing the lead to Monk. Stiles was able to recover in fifth place, but Tipping was injured and managed only to finish up in eighth, costing him a chance at the overall for the day and very likely for the series as well. Monk took the overall class win on the day via 5-1 moto finishes. Fisher and Valade took second and third overall, respectively. Action in the Mini classes was also exciting. The points standings are very close in several of the divisions, and the intensity of the racing reflected these close margins. In the Youth division, Mississippi's lack Lawler took the overall, ahead of Jesse Van Patten and Chase Borders, who are very close in the overall series standings. In the Junior Mini class, Florida's Cole Boutwell took the overall ahead of Mississippi's Joshua Eure and Van Patten. East Point, Georgia's Arthur Cofield swept both motos in the 65cc (7-9) division, and Brandon Hamilton did likewise in the 50cc (7 -9) class. In a hard-fought Over 40 battle, local Pro Action technician Johnny Borders bested Georgia's Darrel Sims and Honda-mounted Danny Faulk, who, after a strong second-place finish in the first moto, crashed hard in the second race, dropping him down in the overall points for the day and severely hampering his bid for the series overall. In the B-c1ass wars, Macon, Georgia's Joshua Fincher was the big winner of the day; he swept both 125cc motos and followed up with a strong second-place overall in the 250cc B class. Suzuki-mounted Jonathan West swept both motos of the 125cc C division, ahead of Louisiana's Chase Guedry. In 250cc C action, Matt Barrett and Milian Harris split moto wins, with the overall going to Barrett via his second-moto win.
