OBER FLORESVILLE, TX, DEC. 2-3, 2000 ore than 225 racers came to the sleepy little town of Floresville, Texas, to attend the first-ever VP GP, hosted by the Dirt Bike Club of San Antonio and VP Racing Fuels. The race was sponsored by Kawasaki of Universal City, Yamaha of San Antonio, Alamo Cycle Plex, Joe Harrison Honda, Texas Pride BBQ and Cycle Country of New Braunfels, Texas, and was made possible by Steve Bums of VP Racing Fuels and track builder Mike Pitts, as well as the entire San Antonio Dirt Bike Club and especially Richard Bakke. This was also the debut race for the Cycle Ranch Park, and a $2000 Pro purse was up for grabs. The event was held on a 5.5-mile, natural-terrain course that also incorporated the entire motocross track as well as the woods. The race featured 45-minute motos for class racers and 60-minute motos for Pros. The Grand Prix format also had competitors running 100 feet to their bikes, Le Mans style, and for the dead-engine starts. Cold weather greeted racers and fans on Saturday, but no one seemed to care, as 34 pairs of riders made their way to the starting line for the Open Tag Team race. The race featured top local talent including Vince Kacir, James Sanchez, Keith Simmons, Brandon Beabout, Jeremy Stockton, Lance Hailey, Brian Johnson, Jimmy Deak and Eric Heudophl, who recently graduated from the Intermediate ranks and turned Pro. These guys and the rest of the field put on quite a show as they funneled into the woods for nearly eight min• utes and then reappeared and headed toward the motocross section. Average lap times were around 14 minutes. The fastest lap time of the event belonged to Keith Simmons, M during the tag-team contest. Simmons posted a 11 ;35 time and a superfast 11 :11. Yamaha Racing/Smith/Maxima/Tag/Thorbacked Beabout also stopped the clock with a 11; 18 and 11 :22 tally. Beabout's score, combined with that of his partner, Jeremy Stockton (12:07 and 12;26), made them the overall winning tag team. Sunday morning was cold and rainy, but the track was perfect. Some of the wooded sections had to be rerouted due to massive ruts and mudholes, but most riders said they had a blast despite the conditions. Yamaha-mounted Steve Unruh pointed out that you had to really watch out for those shiny, flat, slick spots or you were guaranteed to take a soil sample, and that he would rather find a rut or some outside-line loam than chance the inviting shiny spots. Despite the rain, 250cc Open D rider Dennis Barrett had a fun day even though he took out the empty 55-gallon drum in the first turn after another rider cut him off. Barrett remounted and finished out the race in 12th place. In another interesting mishap, Beabout's YZ125 ran out of gas on the last lap. As he was zip codes out in front, Beabout waited patiently for his dad, Greg, to come back with some gas. Beabout refueled and won the 0-200 B class uncontested. The main event and the last race of the day was the ProfAA contest. Fourteen riders lined up and ran to their bikes in hopes of collecting a paycheck. YZ426F-mounted Simmons was the one to beat, as he put down the fastest lap times of the race. Simmons went on to win the lion's share of the purse. Todd Slavick took second overall. Simmons completed five laps with an overall time of 1:01 :27.
