The young Kawasaki jockey he ld on to ta ke second place, over local ripper Travi s Brandt. Eddie Salazar was the surprise winner of hea t nu mb er th ree after a great battle with A ndy Le ster from Po rt Mansfield, Texas. Local rider Tim Long was also in the hun t until he cased the tri p le and crash ed hard , givin g hi m a DNF for the night. The fi n al qua lifying h ea t w en t to Harl ingen Mo tor Sports Suzuki ' s Bryan Monjaras, w ho stom ped his peers. Th e fourth-heat holeshot went to All Bra nd Cycles-backed Brandon Ca meron, but Cameron also cased the triple- ha nding the lead back to Monj aras and failing to make the main. In th e o nly Pee Wee ra ce of the eve n ing, local boy Ricky Masso put his KTM u p front with a s tro ng hol eshot. Ricky Garcia was ru nning in second , follow ed by William Masso. A third -la p mistake put lead rider Ricky Masso on the gro u nd , giving the lead to Ga rcia . Masso qu ickly remo unted but could not catch Garcia. The overall went to Garcia, followed by Ricky Masso in second and his bro ther William in third . The jump contest only attrac ted three rid er s, and it was Vallejo and ho me tow n favorite Cam eron who sto le th e show . Th e cr o w d wa s tr e a te d to nacna cs, whips, can-cans and Superman moves. In the end, Vallejo edged ou t Ca mero n for the $500 purse. The main even t was a real bambum- er. The Kawasaki of Mexic o /Pro C ircuit / Troy Lee Des ig ns /Shoe i /Ren th al / PG Raci n g / Alp in es ta r s /DHL / Bridgestone-back ed Valle jo pulled th e holeshot. Yamaha-mounted Brandt go t a good s ta rt, follow ed b y Blanco, Bod e a nd Monj a ra s , Va llejo went ri g h t to wo rk and left the rest of the field fightin g fo r se cond . Bla nc o mad e a qu ick pass on Brandt and cau ght up to Vallejo. From that p oin t on, Blanco and Vallejo flew over the doubles side by sid e, with Bode, Mo njaras and Brandt in tow. Dennis Haggerty left the track disappointed after he cased th e triple a n d la n d e d ha rd . His crash also u nseated contender Mike Maley, w ho got second last year at this event. Maley quickl y remoun ted but was unable to catch the lead ers, and he finishe d fift h. Vallejo took th e wi n , with Blan co, Bode, Monjar as an d Bra ndt follow ing . To celebra te his victory, Vallejo busted a per fect can- can on the finish- line tr iple. Then 'he brou ght the cro wd to its feet by strippi ng off his jersey and tossing it to his ap preciative fans . The second day of racing was great, bu t it might have been a lot bett er had the promoter called all the race rs to the line for the start of the Sunday main . Rio Grande Valle y Mot ocross Association's Monja ras a nd Mal ey w er e still in th e pits w hen the race sta rted without them . When they finall y rea lized the race had s t a r te d , they s cra m b led li ke fi ght er pilo ts and fell in, a lmost a lap beh ind the other racers. In the main event, Team Kawasaki of Mexico' s Vallejo pu lled a holesh ot that S V 1YdP wovlcJ like-fo pC,V" P . was a carbo n copy of his holesh ot in th e previous night' s race. H e was followed by Blanco, Bran d t, Evere tt Vang sn es a n d H o nd a rid e r Nick Pup ek. Once aga in , Va lle jo and Blanco simply demolished the competition, popping wheelies thro ug h the infiel d and moc king the la ppers. Bra nd t pu t on a grea t race, finishing third overall for the day. Meanw hile, Mo n jaras was on th e m ove , lapping so me riders twice. Mo njaras worked his way up to fou rth place, where he would finis h ou t the race. If Mon jaras had had a fair star t, things mig ht have gone his way, as he was riding extremely well. Meanwh ile , ba ck at the fro n t, Va llejo and Blanco were putting on a show for the crowd as th ey continued to mi x it up. Blancoput th e mov e on his buddy and he ended up taking the wi n.
