In the 250cc contest, Clark Stiles had some poor s ta rts , but he made up for them as the race progr essed. In the first mot o, Stiles caine through the first lap in the fifth position. He battled his wa y up to th ird b efore dropping back to fourt h at the checkered flag. Taking the th ird spot away fro m Stiles was Wis consin's David Oertel, who started right behind Stiles and followed him until he sa w hi s cha nce to pass on th e fourth lap. Holding on to second place in the first moto was no problem for Jeff Gibson, w ho go t a great start and led for th e first four laps before falli ng victim to Ridd le. With big mone y o n the line, the Pros got ser ious in the second 250cc Pro moto. Riddle jumped ou t in front righ t off the line, with Kansan Robbie Skaggs on his heels. Skaggs was hoping fo r a good showing in th e secon.d moto to bri ng his overa ll up after h is se venth-place finish in th e first moto. His 7-2 fi nishes land ed him in third ov erall , and h e walked away with $365. Gibson crossed the line in third, and his 2-3 finish es earne d him second overall and $480. Riddle's 1-1 brought him a paycheck of $760. In the 125cc Pro races, Riddle again led the way in both motos for another p a ych eck of $400. CMC T rans-Cal Nationals Round 4 Perris Raceway : Payne makes quakes By Tony Aless i PERRIS, CA,OCT. 17 illy Pa yne" s e n t a s hock w a v e th rou gh the Pro ranks by winning th ree ou t of four motos en route to the overall 125cc Pro-class victory and p lacing a close second in th e 250cc Pro ranks during round four of th e CMC SunStar Sprockets Trans-Cal Nationals, held at the reno vated Perri s Raceway. . Payne joined nearly 400 competitors on the day after a 7.1 earthquake ru m bled through the region, but mo st racers see med una ffected by th e sha ke r a nd came prepared to race. Payn e and Greg Schnell faced off earl y in the first 12Sec Pro moto, but Payn e was on top of his game and made short work of the Bell Helmets-spon sor ed rid er by making the pass on a high-speed stra ight and then roosting awa y to what appea red to be an easy win. Tyler Evans rode a mostly un eventful race for third . Roo kie Pro Johnny Marley, Ty Kad y and Mich ael Young rou nded ou t the top sev en. In the second rnoto, Payne ya nked a big holeshot, wi th Marley in tow. The two form er minicycle greats were quick to pull away, while Young moved into third . '1 had a bad first moto," You ng said. "I was taken ou t in the first tum and spent all of the race getting back to seventh." Payne opened u p a comfortable lead, w hil e Marley began to feel so me heat from Young. "I think he is still a little scared racing in the Pro class," said Team Suzuki 's Robbie Reynard. "I brought him down to m y winter h ouse in Coron a so he cou ld race wi th the California locals for a few w eek s and hopefu ll y build up some confidence." Young pressured his way past Marlev and int o seco nd, where he remained for the rest of the race . In the end , Payne pos ted a runaway victory.
