Dust and its resu lting poor visibility w er e once again the primary obstacles faced by nearly 170 rid ers during th e tw o-loop, 96.7-ground-mile event. OMC's Brian Ja gger and Ge org e Keeran designed a challenging, fast and technical course that su rp rised rid ers by featuring high speed averages mi xed with unexpectedcJ1eck placements. "The first test set my pace for th e day," Galfo rd said, "b ut 1 caug ht myself riding a little more conservative later." The second loop's 49 m iles began with a tes t as riders left the gas. Eight miles later, at check six , Butler closed K the ga p by dropping on ly thr ee po ints to Galford's four . "I knew I had to stay focused," Butler said . "I just put my head down and rode." Galford was aware his lead might be in jeopardy. . " I h a d to di tch th e co n servative thing," Galford said, "so 1 went for it." At the seven th check, Butler' s ex tra concentration and precise rid in g added on ly five tie-b r ea k er seconds to his sco re. Galfo rd go t to the check to discover that he had burned it. "There was so much dust ," Galford said. '1 rolled up to the check as fast as I could , but I m ad e the stupid mental mistake of not looking down at my clock first." "Esp ecially the second loop, with its speed averages and new trail. " "Its just too bad that none of our rain dan ces worked," ad ded Stowe. "That' s the only thing that could have made the day better." Event participants w or e g reen ribbons on their helmets during the race' in mem ory of 13-year-old enduro and cross co u n try B-class rid er Matt Poor, who died the week before in an accident. Six members of Poor's famil y, including his father, mother and both brothers, rode the end uro to honor him , while approximatel y 30 other family member s were there to encourage and support them . "We' re going to miss Mati," But ler said . "He was on his wa y to being one of the fastest riders in the district. I'm sure he's out there, roo sting us fro m a better place."
