Trackstar Mot orspor ts' Marty Ma taya piloted a
bo ne...s toc k ATK 605 to vic torv in mo classes at

the fina l Distri ct 23 event of the season, hos ted
b y th e Fly in g Du tchme n Me at t he Bro w n
County Fairgrounds.
Mataya fitted his ATK trail bike with a d irt
tra ck rear tire a nd e lec te d to ru n the origina l ,
front tir e. Th e se tu p was rig ht o n the mo ney.
Mataya, who's been busy turning wr enches for
his so ns ja cob and Nicky, hasn' t raced all.season, bu t he d ecided to return to action for the
final race weeke nd of the year.
The act ion got u nd er way in the Stock Frame
(fo u r-s tro ke ) class. Ho le shot ace Er ic Be rg
jum ped into the lead . Mataya, Rick And erso n,
Bob Becker, Steve Doty and the rest of the field
ga ve chase. Berg was o n a good run, hold ing,off
Mataya's ad vances. On lap th ree, And erson ran
into Mat a ya' s back e nd a nd a lmost crashe d .
Mat aya was slowed drama tically, allowin g Berg
a nd Becker to pu ll awa y. With two lap s remaining/ Becker ma de a turn- fou r pass on ~rg to
take the lead , bu t he was un awar e of Mataya's
comeback charge. Mataya slipped by Berg an d
ree led in Becker on the last lap to sco re a win
that surp rised even himself.
"I didn' t have any intenti on of win ning tha t
race," said Ma taya afterward .
Dot y'and Pa t Far gen raced to fou rt h- and
fifth-place finishes.
Mat ay a a d d ed t he ic i ng to t h e ca ke by
d efeating race favorite Dan Jacobso n in the Over
40 class to record his second win of the day. Paul
Ko ch , Bob Herman a n d C h a r lie Lang la n d
round ed out the top five of the 12-rider field .
The La n gl a nd fa m ily ea rn ed th e " trip le threa t aw a rd ." Ch a rl ie Langla nd showed his
sons Verdee n and Verlon how it's sup posed to
be d one by winnin g the Over 50 main event for
th e seco n d day in a ro w . Ve rlo n , C harlie's
younges t son, followed suit by racing to victory
in th e 250cc Am at eu r class. So it was. up to
Ve rde e n - Charl ie's o ldest son, wh o wa s
involve d in a poi nt s chase for the Open Pro
cham pionsh ip - to keep the ball rolling, a nd he
admitt ed that the pressur e was on. But he came
th rou gh by win ning th e 250cc Pr o fin a l an d
completing the Langland trip le play.
Verdee n Langland wasn' t as fortu nate in the
Ope n Pro final, howev er. He finis hed fou rt h,
behind race winner Randy Triplett , Dust y Fau lds
a nd Satu rda y's event win ner, Billy Hofmeister.
Lang land 's fourth-place finish allowed Triplelt
to bring closu re to a dramatic season long points
battle. Tr iplet t wo n the race a nd the cha m pionship by a sing le po int over Lang land.

Bob He rma n and Adam He nrichs each scored
two class victories du ring the Hying Dutchma n
Me's dirt track races held at the Brown County
Fairground s.
Herman 's first win came in the Over 40 class.
He came ou t on top of a close, race long battl e
with Vintage Twin winner Dan Jacobso n. Dave
Koch , Mar ty Mat a ya a nd C ha rlie Langla nd
roun ded out the top five of the 14-rider pack.
Herma n was soon being chased by Jacobson
aga in, as the Vintage Single class took to the
track. jacobson used a high line in tu rns th ree
a nd four to slide by Pau l Koch an d ap ply the
pressure to Herma n, bu t a meticulous ly smoothridin g Herman rema in ed unflappabl e as he
raced on to his seco nd wi n of the day.
When asked abou t his success, the soft-spoken Herm an sim ply re plied , " Everything was
workin g good today."

become the most improved rider this season, as
the speed y teenager hand ily raced to the checkers duri ng both even ts. Hen richs pla ns to compete in the Pro ranks next yea r.
First-y ear Expert Du sty Faul d s came all the
way from Sout h Dakota to up set Verdeen langland and Bob Boyd in the 250cc Pro fina l. Faulds
mad e a nam e for himself in Stu rgis this summ er
by wi n ning a Pro ma in e ve nt that w as fille d
wi th a host of national-numbered riders .
" I wa n t to try to ge t e nough exposu re to
hopefully pick up a ride in the Sportster Per forma nce class for nex t yea r," explained Faulds
afte r the New U1m victo ry.
In ot her racing actio n, Tim Gregory capped a
nearl y pe rfect season by winning the Ove r 30
main eve nt, th us sewi ng up his seasonlong title
chase w it h second -place finis her Mike Led in.
Second-ge nera tion racer Jacob Mataya scored a
po pu lar win in the No vice class. Cha rlotte Morris scored her first win of the season in the Mini
Shaft class, and her bro ther jory Morris took his
customary win in the 60cc Mini main event .
