Greg Du rivage was one of the top rid ers a t the
third annual Jon Leak Mem orial MX, held at the
always fun an d d emanding Sm ith Road Raceway facility. Du riva ge"wo n th e 60ce class an d
took runne r-up hone rs in the 80ce Junio r a nd
Sen ior classes, ea rni ng th e to p Jon Leak Pr id e
Award trop hy. Track owner Geo rge Singler and
crew kept the track in tip-top sha pe throughout
the day. Event sponsors Pent on Hon da / Suzu ki
and Kenned y's Spo rt Cycle, alo ng wi th many
others , donated door prizes and award s.
Durivage battl ed with Steven Carnahan for
most of the weekend in th e bOce class and the
Mini Junior classes. Ca rnahan was a stro ng 5(.-'C~
ond in the 60ee class, in which he actu all y had
the win in hand until one of the twisty turns sent
him down, which wa s all Duriva ge need ed to
take th e win . Ca rna ha n reb ounded to wi n the
SOce Juni or class, with Durivag e a close second
a nd Kyle McConnell claiming thi rd . Durivage
nearl y had the 80cc Senio r-class w in in the bag,
but Todd Sindair zipped by with onl y a few corners -rem ain ing in th e second moto to take the
win , wi th Ton y Doble nabbing third overall.
Brian Belsole blasted to the win in the Over
25 cla ss wi th 2-1 moto fin ishes, putting in an
in spiring se co n d- m o to co me -fr o m -be h in d
cha rge for the w in, with Greg Urban taking second ov erall and Darin Zaremba takin g third
overa ll. Zaremba came back in the 250cc B class
an d clai med the win wi th a seco nd-moto victory
over the poor-starting Be)sole, who too k seco nd
overalt after coming from way behind to move
up on the lead ers, only to ru n ou t of laps . Belso le rece ived the ot he r Jon Lea k Prid e Award
tro phy for his hard riding and never-give-up
attitude .

the w in with do u ble moto \;ctories.
Eric Double received the Sportsman's awa rd
for helpi ng a downed rid er in the middle of his
School boy-class moto. A rider was down on the
blind side of a hill, a nd in a very unselfish manner, Double sto pped to block tra ffic from runnin g him over.

Tra vis Bamford won the AA class a t the inaugural cross country even t hosted by the Emerald
Trail Rid er s Associatio n. The race wa s round
seven of the Oregon Moto rcycle Riders Association series, and 77 entra nts took on the 12-mile
cou rse, which ranged from tight trees to ope n
brush and a grass· track st..'Ction .
The Funky Chicken 'Cross Co untry race featu red a Le Mans-style start, in which the racers .

Jeff Eid e showed why he ca rr ies the Californi a
Racing Club's 125i:c number-one plate for 1999,
as fie walked away from the competition in the
1SS
125cc Intermediate CL and lei them try to find
him during th e annual runnin g of the Outlaw
Gra n d Prix , held a t Los Angeles Co unty Raceway.
Brent Gilliam was q uickest off the d ead en gine start when sta rter Don Gossett: waved the
. green flag , a hea d of Eide. Donnie Durrer and
M ike Mead ows. Within a lap of th e extended
co u rse, wh ich utilized bo th the J.B. Mem orial
and Sad d le Glen tra cks , it was Eid e out front .
with Gillia m a close second . Durrer controlled .
third, while Matt Armstro ng got aro un d Meadows for fou rth.
By the 15-minute mark of th e 45-minute race,
E de had 10 seco nds on Gilliam and looked to be
in control of the situation o n his TMR /Thor /

aft er another to doub le the ga p between himseU
and Gilliam bv the time the checkers came ou t.
DuTrer sl ow ed with problems and event ually
pulled out of th e race, and Armstrong made it a
Yamah a swee p of the top three positions.
Eddi e Laret controlled the pace out front in
th e 250cc In te rm e d ia te cla ss a ft e r a lap o f
jos tling. Ra ym o nd Smith a nd Nick Ma ir ose
ma tched Laret move for move, which made for a
good b att le for the lead in t he ea r ly la p s.
. Mairose a nd Smith even tua lly pulled awa y from
La ret , and Mairose was fin a lly a ble to shake
Smith at the halfway poin t. Mairose looked to
have the win in the bag un til a rear flat ruin ed
his day. Smit h glad ly took over the lead, only to
develop a front flat of his ow n, and he had to
drop off the pace. Scott McCollough wa sn't the
fastest rider in the class up to this point, bu t he
did manage to finish with sufficient air pressure
in both tires to collect the class win . Chris Reed
overcame a bad start to finish in second place,
ahead of Smith and Orr.
