BLOUNTVILLE, TN, SEPT. 12
ou nd 13 of the AM A u.s. Mega
Series turned ou t to be "Rookie
Day" at Muddy Creek Racew ay.
Barr 's Com petition/Pro-Action / Bridgesto ne' s Da niel Tesh of Sugar G rove,
No r th Caroli na, took th e w in in th e
250cc A cla s s w it h 1- 1 fi nis hes, a n d
Jim ' s Ho nda of Kingsport's Ha ns Neel
ended u p wit h th e 12Scc A overa ll
even though he did n't win eit he r moto,
Neel wa s a lso runner-u p to Tesh in the
2S0cc A con test , making Neel th e bigmoney winner in Mega Series pro payoff.
R
Neel has been racing in the A ranks
for less than a yea r, an d Tesh is jus t now
ge tling his feet wet after two seasons of
terrorizing the B classes.
Nearly 500 riders enjoyed perfect racing conditions on th e lo n g , lo a m y
Muddv Creek track .
Tesh's RM
.250 handled the track with
no problem in both 250cc A motos. Tesh
absconded with the holeshot in the first
moto a nd held off all cha llenges from
veteran Jim Chester, w ho found himse lf
being swarmed by Neel an d Paul Justu s.
While Chester was occu pied wi th Neel
a nd Justus, Tesh cruised to th e mot o
win . Justus came ac ross the lin e next,
fo llowed by Chester, Neel a nd KTM
rider Shawn Prather.
Chester had the hot sta rt on the second round, wi th Tes h superglued to his
fender. Tes h stayed on the atta ck, hunt- '
ing for an opening, and wh en he found
one , he pow er ed through for the lead
and his first A-class win on a big tra ck.
Ju stus had mash ed his knee ea rlier
when he and ano ther racer bumped on
the start, and he wa s not a fact or in this
moto. N ee! took his place in second at
the finish line by passing Chester, thereby earn ing second overall.
Jered Black and Brian Raymond ba ttled for fourth . Black earned that pos i- .
tion, with Raym ond not far to his south
to round out the top five.
If Tesh 's 250cc A effort was a dream
race, it turned int o a nightmare in the
first 12Sec A moto when he had to take a
DNF to repair his bike.
"There was a pr oblem with the clutch
box," explained Tesh, "Ha lfway through
the first lap, the bike started to coast and
the gea rs wouldn't enga ge at all."
In Tesh 's first-mota absence, Prat her
took th e mot o w in, follow ed by Neel,
Justus, Raym ond and Chester .
In the se co nd 12Scc A mo to, both
Tesh and C hes te r were hea ding th e
field . Jim's bu lldo g grip on the lead wa s
not to be pried loose this time, and the
best Tesh cou ld d o wa s stay close .
Earl y in the moto Pra ther was able to
get a wheel on Tesh, but going into the
w hoops in the woo ds section, Prather
crashed and ga ve Tesh so me welcome
racin g roo m. Prather eventua lly recovered to finis h fifth, while Neel skipped
acro ss the line in th ird, ahea d of Raym o nd Pr ath e r . Pr ath er go t hi s ac t
together later in the Ove r 25 A class and
waxed Chester in both m ot os for th e
overall win .
Neel 's 2-3 finis hes we re good for the
12Scc A overall wi n , to his surp rise.
Ha ns' dad, Victory Spor ts a nno u ncer
Reggie Neel, had a little fu n wi th him,
telling him that so meone had p rotested
his second-moto finis h. 0 one had, but
fo r a while H a n s m ad e h im se lf real
scarce with his payoff.
At the little-guy end of the spec tru m,
ationaI SOcc (4-6) Champion Ian Tret tel showed his stuff by winning th at
class in a g reat battle w it h a no ther
nationa l conte nde r , Co dv Robb ins .
Thou gh the final results sho wed Ian tak ing the win with 1-1 finishes, it wa sn 't
all that cut and dried. Cody got the seco n d-rno to h ol esh ot and hel d off th e
champ for ha lf of the race. Once Trett el
broke through into clean ai r, however,
th er e wa s no s to p p in g him . Robb in s
stayed close in the runner-up spo t, follo w ed by Da ko ta Matthews for third
eN
overall.
