AMA Fall Classic MX Series, Round 1 Events hrun, tar§ten lead the war By Jerry Athey B UDDSCREEK, MD,SEPT. II obbie Horton and Barry Ca rsten each flew to victory at round one of th e AMA Fa ll C lassi c Motocross Ser ies, held at Budds Creek MX Park. Horton took hom e the lion's sha re o f the $450 0 purse , p ilo ting his Team M ot a Pl an et / AI La ne / FMFba ck ed Yamaha to th e overa ll in th e 250cc Pro cla ss with a s tro ng 2-1 ride, and fini shing second in th e 125cc Pro cla ss aft er splittin g m ota wins with Carsten, w ho took the overa ll aboard his Bromley Suzuki /MSR /Dunlop-backed RM. Cars ten stru ggled with poor sta rts . in the 250cc clas s, but he wa s able to salvage his day by ch arging through th e pack to a fou rth-overall finish. Team Green Kawasaki /Fox's Jeff Gibson pu t in a strong and consistent 33 rid e fo r second overall in the 250cc class and finished fourth overall in the 125cc class wi th 5-4 mota finishes . Podium One /FMF/Thor' s Ben Riddle mad e his pro debut an impressive one by posting a consistent 3-3 tally for third overall in the 125cc class. Riddl e's best was yet to come , though, as the 16year-old rocketed from the ga te in the first 250cc mota on the heel s of ra ce leader Mickael Pich on, who was riding to get in some a d d itiona l track time befo re Sunday's U'S. GP. Riddle kep t the Frenchman in sight for the better part of the mota before mechanical g re mli ns forced him to retire from the race . Triad Power Sports /Protel /TMR's Jim Neese rode co nsiste ntly to finish fifth overall in both classes. Four-Stroke and Ju nior (O ve r 25) Amat eur N ational Ch a mpion Ke vin Walker put his Yama ha int o the lead of th e fi r st 125cc m ota , fo llo wed b y Carsten, Ho rton , Riddl e an d Gibson. Carsten and Horton went a t it immediately, battling for the runner -up position and rapidly closing the ga p on Walker. A lap later, Ca rsten made his move for the lead , charging under Walke r on the fast down hill a p proach to Bu d ds Creek's large table top s. Both Horton and Riddle also moved arou nd Wa lker. With just a few minutes left in the mota , Horton passed Carsten in a steep offcamber and raced off to the mo ta victory . Ca rsten cha rged in for second, fol lo wed by Riddle. Walker was fou rth, followed by Gibs on . Carsten led the 23-rider field int o the fir s t turn to begin the se co n d 125 cc mota. Ne ese was second, follow ed by Gibson. First-mota winner Horton went down with Walker in the first tum. By halfway, Horton had charged into third, and he began to hound Gibson for the runner-up position, making the pass before the completion of the lap. Carsten w as th e next rid er in Horton's sights; Ho rton rep ea ted ly came at the Suzuki rider in an effort to force a late-mota mistake. But Carsten held on for the mo ta w in - and the overall vic tory. Ho rton charged in for second, right on Carsten's heels. Riddl e matched his first-mota score of third , followed by Gibson in fou rt h. Neese improved upon his first-mota seve~th by rounding ou t the top five. Wallace was next, followed by Neese, Carst en and loca l vet her o Jeff Grove. "I was right behind Pichon," sa id Riddle. "Then, all of a sudden, Horton caught up to me. I tried to pick up the pace and then m y bike seized up." Horton inherited the runner-up position. Behind him th er e was an int ense battle for third between Gibson, Wallace, Ca rsten and Neese. Pichon took the un con te sted mota win, foll ow ed b y Horton. Gibson was third, follo wed by Carsten and Wallace. Horton blasted to the second 250cc mota holesh ot, pursued by David Kra tz, G ibson and Chad Sa nner. Horton promptly checked out, leaving the rest of the fiel d to ba ttle for second . Kra tz a nd Gibson fough t fo r th e runn er-up spot, followed by a four-rider dogfigh t for fourth bet ween Yama ha rid er Tod d Do wns, N ee se , Wal k er and Ca rs ten . Neese was th e fir st rider to go p a s t Downs, and he began to close the ga p on Kra tz and Gibson. Wit h ju st a few laps rema inin g, Ca rsten also moved past Downs and in to the top five . Horton took the d ecisive mota win, followed by Kratz . Gibson was third . Neese was fourth, followed by Ca rsten. U.S. GP AMATEUR DAY Ru n in co nju nctio n with the AMA Fall Classic Series, the Budds Creek U'S, GP amateur program provided riders with the oppo rtu nity to test their skills on the same track on which their World Champi on ship Grand Pri x h ero es would d o battle the following day . In addition to th e o n e -mo t a -fo r ma t motocross event, a nighttime su percros s was held on a s eparate co u r se built insid e of Budds Creek's oval sp rint-car track . A co m bine d total of more th an 400 rid e rs competed, with beautiful commemorative U.S. GP Am ateur Day plaques awarded generously. Nicholas Evennou and Bryan Wallace were the top finishing riders of the day, scoring four wins each. Ev ennou pi lo ted h is Team Greenbacked Kawasakis to perfect 1-1 finishes in the 80cc (12-13) an d Supermini classes in both the mot ocro ss and supercross even ts. Ch ad Dow ling and Paul S hu maker kep t Even no u ho nest during the mo tocross races, finishi ng second- and thir d , respectively, in eac h of th e two classes. Shumaker was also the runnerup in the 80cc (12-13) supercross class , fo llowed by Ja s o n Mi tc he ll. Larry Ad kins finished second to Evennou in the Su permi ni supercross event , followed by Brad Smith an d Shumaker. Tim Pustelak flew to the 12Sec A and 250cc A motocross wins. Jeremy Guages finished seco nd in the 125cc A class after scoring the holeshot, followed by Brad y Mills in third . Matthew Bateman was the runner-up in the 250cc A class , followed by Joshua Dorn . In addition to d ominating the amateur expert divisio ns , Pustelak a ls o co m p eted in the AMA Fall Classic even t, m a kin g it a lon g, six-mota day for the hard-charging Kawasaki pilot.
