McG ra th finished seco nd for the thi rd time in the day, and suddenly the g reatest supercross rider of all time was looking rather human. "I d on' t know," McGrath said. "It 's a little slippery, maybe I need mo re time on the bike. I sho uld be okay w ith in a week or two." T h ir d place in the first s e m i was La Rocco, fo llowed b y Button , Se rge Guidetty, Chiodi, Alessandro Belome tti, Edgar Torron teras, N icolas Charlier an d La rry Ward . In the second semi, Albe rtyn kept his good fonn together wit h a win ahea d of Everts, Emig, Vohla nd, Pich on , Bolley, Claud io Federici, To rte lli and , in 10t h place, young Belgian rid er Stev e Ramon. Ernig, w ho was making his firs t nonfactory ride for mo re than a decade, was more "tha n happy w it h his third-place fini sh . " I have had better days," Emig said . " I m igh t sa y though, I'm having a reall y good time. I rode for myself today, di d no t have to prove any thing to anyone. It's a little different than what I'm used to." With all the showmanship out of the w ay it was tim e for the fina l. Th is was the m omen t Everts ha d been waiting for. Time for revenge. As the riders en tered the firs t lap of " th e final. Ward w as lookin g for event wi n number fou r. Eve rts, though, was no t abo ut to let the tall American ou t of his sig ht. "I just wa nted to follow him," Everts sai d . "This track is no t easy to pass on and you have to be ca re fu l w he re yo u put your front wheel. 1 figu red if 1 kept near him I w ould ge t him eve ntually." Th ough always coo l under pressure, Ward soo n felt the wrath of Everts . " I felt good ," Ward said. " I kn ew where Everts wa s and I did not feel too much pr essure. All I had to d o was keep m y co n ce n tra tio n a n d 1 wo u ld ge t ano the r win." Despite his com ments, Ward's mind d rifted w it h tw o la ps remaining, and Everts wa s onto him . " I looked at the pits, th ey told me we had two laps to go:' Evert s sa id . " I kne w 1 needed to get him soon . Lu cky fo r m e h e m a d e a mi s ta ke and I just rode pa st for the win." H avin g crossed th e finish line first, Everts added a no ther Fas tcross vic to ry to his 1993 wi n, ma king him only th e thi rd rider to wi n more tha n once at the Italian event. (Larry Ward won in 1996 and '98 and Ricky John son won in 198788, and 1990). For that Eve rts was humble. "To wi n th is race tw ice is very difficult," Everts sa id.
