CMC SunStar Sprockets Golden State Nationals Round 1: Glen Helen Raceway Park SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JAN. 16 ifteen-year-old Bobby Bonds showed little respect for his elders this weekend, posting an impressive five out of six moto victories en route to the 125, 250 and 500cc Pro-class F victories at round one of the CMC SunStar Sprockets Golden State Nationals, held at Glen Helen Raceway Park. Bonds joined nearly 800 other racers for this time-honored epic California Motocross Series, now in its 24th year. "Racers are here today from all over the country: Gene Stull [from Pennsylvania], Justin Smith [from Texas], Mike Brown [from South Carolina] and David Loft [from Chili], just to name a few," said CMC director Stu Peters. For Bonds, this could be just the beginning of things to come for this former CMC Pee Wee, 60cc, 80cc and 125cc Schoolboy racer. "I have been racing Golden States since I was a Pee Wee racer," said Bonds. "Now I have a factory contract, and by this time next year I hope to be on the FMF/Honda factory 125cc race team. But for now, I just want to race and make money at these races to pay back the $5000 I borrowed to buy this Troy Lee Mazda truck." Just how fast is this teenager from Mariposa? Bonds stretched out a pair of 20-second leads in the ultracompetitive 125cc Pro division to top the likes of former top 125cc national pilot Brown and hot rookie talent Andrew Short, Jonathan Shimp and Gerrit Ordelman. Bonds also took the 250cc Pro win, although that victory required some work. "I went down in the first turn of the 250cc Pro race after someone hit me from behind," Bonds recounted. "I caught back up to third behind one Honda guy and Andrew Short. Now I need to win the next moto and Short needs third for me to get the overall." Bonds did indeed take a convincing win in the all-important second moto. Team DeMarini-backed Smail recorded a solid second, in front of Yoshitaka Atsuta, Shimp and Brad Hagseth. In the end it was all Bonds', whose 3-1 score lopped Atsuta's 2-3, Short's 1-6 and Shimp's 4-4. Team Yamaha's Billy Laninovich was this week's top Intermediate racer, posting the overall win in both the 250cc Intermediate and Schoolboy divisions. However, Laninovich found things a bit tougher in the 125cc Intermediate division, as Michael Blose steamrolled his way to the overall vic- tory. Sean O'Connor was king of the the 50cc (4-6) class, running away overall, while Texan Justin Smith, R.J. and hiding in each moto. Stewart and Thompson and Laninovich rounded 80 (14ยท16): 1. CN year's opening round, with nearly 300 entries in the small-bore classes. For the first time in recent memory, split gates were required in the Supermini class after a record 48 riders entered. Team Yamaha's Jesse Casillas and Team Suzuki's Dylan Lord argued all day for the honor of being top 80cc pilot on the premises. In the end, it looked like a tie; Lord won both 80cc (14-16) motos over Casillas, and Casillas won both Supermini motos over Lord. Team Thousand Oaks Yamaha/ KTM's Mike Alessi was the weekend's only minicycle double class winner, sweeping both the 80cc (7-11) and 60cc (9-11) classes. Alessi topped a trio of Yamaha riders, including Jarred Browne and Mike's brother Jeff Alessi in the 80cc (7 -11) division, while Colorado's Ike Jost was the next best in the 60cc (9-11) division.
