AMA Mid-South CIIampionship Winter Hare Scrambles Series Round 7: Y2K Southeast Cross Country Shootout Ricketts soaks one up Southeast Cross Country Shootout: Shad Ricketts set sail (almost Iiterallyl) to the overall win at round seven of the AMA Mid-South Championship Winter Hare Scrambles Series, held in Maplesville, Alabama. By "I hit a pretty good line right from the start through the extremely wet fields," Stuckey said. "Just as I got through the woods a good way, I heard the big four-stroke [Ricketts] directly behind me. We battled back and forth for three-quarters of the lap; then he finally passed me." The Sarge's Cycles/Oakley/Big Gun/Moose/Moderne Tire/Cycle Path-backed Ricketts grabbed the lead and stayed out front for the rest of the race, but Stuckey gave him a tough run on the first lap. They finished the 12-mile course within 38 minutes, and Stuckey came through the score tent five seconds after Ricketts. The next AA rider to come through was Performance Cycles and Accessories of Dalton/IMS/MSR-sup-ported Hendricks, followed by Robbie King. On the second lap, most AA riders started their battle with the lappers, but Ricketts soaked up the mud and just took off. "Somebody must have' forgotten to tell Ricketts that it was raining," said MotoSports Kawasaki/Moose-backed Stuckey, "because he was gone." Ricketts finished the second lap with four minutes on the rest, while on the last lap he had an eightminute lead. Stuckey faced another battle, as Hendricks moved in for second place. The two men started it abol.\t halfway through the second lap and continued their battle into the last lap, until Stuckey found himself stuck in the mud, caught behind a lapped rider. Hendricks came in second overall, and Stuckey followed 11 seconds DEBBIE ALLEN MAPLESVILLE, AL, JAN. 9 T he AMA/Pirelli Tires/Parts Unlimited/Moo set Offro ad- spo nso red Mid-South Championship Winter Series teamed up with SERA and SETRA for its annual Southeast Cross Country Shootout, held in Reynolds Pasture. Just prior. to the race, a thunderstorm rolled through, creating a flash flood that delayed the race for a half-hour. Nevertheless, Shad Ricketts barreled for the bull's-eye and hit it right on the mark. The grand winner won with an eight-minute lead on his 10 opponents. "I got a bad start again," Ricketts said, but his wife claimed to know of a cure for his poor-start woes; she said it started with an US" - as in "Suzuki" - and ended with something called an electric start. Whatever the case, Ricketts' poor start appeared to have no effect on his performance. The only problem he encountered was after the race, not during. His bike trailer got stuck in the field, so he had to unload it, move the trailer to the other end of the field, and then load it again. Eleven AA riders lined up at the rain-drenched start, and SETRA rider Rod Stuckey claimed the holeshot. He led the pack around a wide turn and spun through a long grass-track with ease. Mid-South rider Chris Hicks, SETRA rider Tommy Veator, and Mid-South rider Gary Hendricks soon followed, but they eased up on the throttle, allowing Ricketts to take control. The two leaders, Stuckey and Ricketts, battled for the first lap. 34 FEBRUARY 2. 2000' cue • e n e _ s down for third place overall. Fourth place overall was claimed by 200 A winner Mike McCrea, and 250/0pen A winner Dustin Gibson was fifth overall. "I had a good start with Timmy P'Pool, right in front of David McWilliams and Robert Neeley," said Bike Pedlar/Pro Action of Kentuckysupported Gibson. "We rode together for about the first lap. After a while, Mike McCrea caught up to me. I like following him because I got to see him ride, and-he's a good rider." McCrea stopped for goggles on the second lap, and Gibson passed him. Gibson stayed in front for a while, but McCrea had already won fourth place overall due to adjusted time. McCrea's class started one minute down from Gibson's class, but McCrea ended up passing Gibson just before the end of the last lap. The Perry Mountain Trailriders created a tough course, which withstood the 352 dirt bikes and Mother Nature's flood. However, 62 riders found the track too challenging and were unable to finish, and the entire Women's class decided not to start at all. Mid-South rider Holly Jones did tough it out in the Beginner class, and she came in fourth. SETRA's Junior class had seven riders who finished, and Josh Miller and Jeff Parke made two laps for first and second place. eN Reynolds Pastil'" Maplesville, Alabama Results: January 9, 2000 [Round 71 O/A: 1.
