GFI Racing Winter Series South ~'Round 2: Perris Raceway By GREG gave the spectators a show by whipping his Honda on the big double along the hill every lap en route to his decisive win, with an eventual 40-second lead. Sleeter got around Sprenkel but had his hands full with Takeshi Katsuya for the second half of the race. Sleeter prevailed in the end on ROBERTSON PERRIS, CA, JAN. 9 iloting his potent Mid Cities/Oakley/FMF/ Answer-backed CR 125, Bobby Bonds came from out of the pack to run away with the 125cc Proclass win during round two of the GFI P Daton Beavers (125) airs out his KX125 en route to a two-moto sweep of the Schoolboy class at round two of the GFI Racing Winter Series South. Racing/Goat Eyewear/76/Noleen/ FMF/Fox/Pro Circuit-sponsored Winter Series, held at Perris Raceway. A huge spectator turnout and more than 450 anxious riders were treated to a redesigned track and a picture-perfect sunny Southern California day, and motos were run right up until sunset. It was Honda rider Chris Barrett who emerged with the holeshot when the 125cc Pros hit the track for their oneshot, 20-minute moto. Dusty Walters and Chris Sprenkel gated in second and third, respectively, and within one lap of the jump-filled layout they were running one-two. Akira Narita, Darcy Langer and Lance Smail were all in the lead pack, while Bonds was making his way toward the front from a 10th-place start. By the end of lap two, Bonds was around Walters for second and zeroing in on the front-running Sprenkel. Sprenkel fell victim to Bond's charge and then quickly came under fire from Michael Sleeter. Once out front, Bonds pulled away from the Sprenkel/ Sleeter battle for second at the rate of four seconds per lap. Nathan Woods moved into fourth, ahead of Narita and Smail. For the remaining eight laps, Bonds 32 FEBRUARY 2, 2.000' eye his TMR/NCY/FMF/Maxima/ Renthai-sponsored YZ125 to earn second. Jimmy Varis slowly worked his way up from a poor start for fourth over Woods, Smail and Sprenkel. Nozomv Naya topped Walters for ninth, with Jonathan Shimp rounding out the top lOon his GFI Racing Pro-class debut. Billy Laninovich and his pair of NCY/ Burger King/Troy Lee/Maxima-backed Yamahas continued to dominate the Intermediate ranks as he went four for four to cia im the 125cc and 250cc-class victories. Laninovich easily ran away with both 250cc motos, with Turbo Reif going 3-2 to edge out Sean O'Connor (2-3) for second overall. Laninovich aced the first 125cc Intermediate division-one moto, over Daton Beavers, Corey Macomber and Reif. Steven Haughelstine picked up the division-two win, with Donnie Gritton, Ulysses Pollard Jr. and Taylor Vanderpool in tow. The top 10 riders out of both divisions were combined into the second division-one moto. Pollard led the opening lap, ahead of O'Connor • e n eVIl's and Beavers, while Laninovich was buried midpack. Beavers crashed back to ninth. O'Connor passed Pollard on lap two for the lead. With the white flag out, Laninovich put the move on O'Connor in a small rhythm section to grab the win. Reif tucked underneath O'Connor just before the checkers for 50 OPEN.: 1. Nic Paluzzi (Cob): 2. Trevor Reis (Cob); 3. Dllkota Gamer (Cob); 4. Michael Truglia (Cob): 5. Tommy Aquino (Cob). 60 FIT: I. Yamaha-mounted Jesse Casillas topped a huge Supermini field in both motos, but it wasn't easy. Mike Alessi led Joshua Hanson and Casillas early in the first moto. Hanson slid out in a tum, and his spot was quickly filled by Sean Collier. Casillas dived underneath Alessi just before the "VP Leap' to take the lead; then Collier got Alessi on an uphill on the last lap to secure second place. Alessi absconded with the holeshot in moto two, but within a lap he was being hounded by Casillas and Hanson. It came down to a battle for the lead between Hanson and Casillas on the final circuit, with Casillas squaring off a turn under Hanson for the winning pass. Alessi went 3-4 for third overall. Collier fought his way back from a terrible start to go 2-5 to top the 5-3 of Cale Wallace for fourth overall. Alessi continued on for six moto wins to top the 60cc Open, 60cc Expert and 80cc Open/Expert classes. After handily winning the first Schoolboy moto at the opening round a week earlier and then crashing out of the second moto, Daton Beavers returned to dominate this week's class with a perfect 1- 1 score on his Pro Circuit KX125. Haughelstine was runnerup both times out, with Hanson finishing a respectable third. Jason Larson and Billy Arnone argued over the lead in the first 250cc Novice moto right up until checkers waved, with Larson taking the win by inches. Arnone got around Alvino Garcia and Corey Murphy to run out front after a lap in round two, while Larson had to fight his way up through traffic. Larson caught Garcia for second on the last lap but ran out of time and had to settle for a 1-2 showing, behind Arnone. Garcia (3-3), Brian MacAfee (6-4) and Murphy (5-5) filled out the top five.
