Gerrett Michael Brandes (27) won both the 12!5cc and 2!50cc Pro classes at the opening round of the GFI Winter Series, held at Glen Helen Raceway. Bv I've been off for about two months due to an injury. and I've just started riding again over the last week, so I'm just trying to get back in shape." Carlson was a couple of seconds behind Brandes at the checkers for the second-place money. "I had the lead for about five laps," explained the F&S Suzuki/No Fear/Arnette/Shoei/O'Neal/All Probacked Carlson. "Then, in back, I had the inside line, and my back end kind of slid out and I noticed Brandes. I let Brandes go by; he's a really good rider. and I figured I could learn some things from him. I tucked in behind him and stayed right with him, which pumps me up for Supercross." Payne was slowly closing in on Carlson. but he ran out of time and had to settle for third. Bobby Bonds charged the entire moto from his midpack start to land in fourth, ahead of Valdez and Husqvarna-mounted Tim Beatty. Walters held on for seventh. with Shanju Takami. Holland and Sweany rounding out the top 10. It was the Team SplitFire/Pro Circuit KX250 of Payne that held the lead off the start of the single 20minute 250cc Pro moto, but Brandes dived underneath him going into the third turn. Payne stayed glued to Brandes. with Bonds joining them and making it a three-rider battle for the top spot by lap four. Bonds stuffed Payne for second place in a big horseshoe berm in front of the grandstands. and then he set out after Brandes. For the next seven laps, Bonds was allover Brandes, and at one point he made his way into the lead, only to be repassed by Brandes with· in a few turns. With the white flag in sight, Bonds went down in a rutted turn, allowing Brandes to cruise on the final lap for the win. "I got off to a good start." said Brandes. "I thought I was gonna get the holeshot, but 1 kept wheelying and GREG ROBERTSON SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JAN. 2 he lure of factory contingency money from the big four manufacturers, along with KTM, brought out more than 600 riders to Glen Helen Raceway Park for Southern California's first big motocross of the year, the opening round of the GFI Racing/Goat Eyewear/Pro Circuit/76/Noleen/PJ 1/FMP/Fox-sponsored Winter Series. Team FMF Honda's newest rider, Michael Brandes, proved to be the man of the hour. as he collected wins in both the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes, while Yamaha-mounted Billy Laninovich continued to rule the Intermediate ranks with victories in the 125cc and 250cc classes. When the gate dropped for the 20minute. one-shot 125cc Pro moto, it was Danny Carlson with the holeshot over the talent-laden field of 24 riders. Oscar Valdez held down second. just ahead of Brian Sweany, Dusty Walters, Brandes and Billy Payne. Rusty HoIland put in a scorching opening lap, going from an eighth-place start to run second, behind Carlson. Brandes was also on the move, passing Valdez for third and then being handed second place when Holland went down. By lap four. Brandes was knocking on Carlson's back door; he kept the throttle pinned and sailed past him on an uphill jump to take the lead. Payne got around Valdez for third at the halfway point, but by this time Brandes and Carlson had 10 seconds on him. Carlson stayed right on Brandes for a few laps before Brandes bumped it up a notch to pull away slightly for the win. "Carlson was riding good," said Brandes after the victory. "The track was real slippery. so I was just trying to be careful out there. I reeled him in lap by lap and made the pass. I haven't been on the bike very much. Il!I 30 JANUARY 26, 2000' eye I e n eVIl'S finally had to put it down and back off a little bit. I made the pass on Payne and knew I had to move out there and get off to a little bit of a lead. Bonds started to turn it up, and he stayed with me for a while; then he dropped off a little towards the end· I guess he crashed or something. Overall, it went well. I'm just glad I ended up winning." Bonds brought his Mid Citiesbacked CR250 across the line in second place, ahead of Payne. Spud Walters ran almost the entire race a lonely fourth, ahead of Holland, Shinobu Idehara and Ty Kady. Two divisions of 125cc Intermediates were run, with the 10 fastest out of each first moto being transferred to a one-shot second-moto confrontation. Laninovich got around a faststarting Sean O'Connor for the division-one first-moto win, with Jake Elkins. Tim Weigand and Jeff Eide filling out the top five. Honda rider Turbo Reif came from out of the pack to earn the division-two first-moto win, over a Yamaha freight train consisting of Steve Mertens, Brian Hulsey, Patrick Terry and Brandon Branes. When the second moto rolled around and the gate dropped for the 20 quickest, it was O'Connor and Laninovich out front. Laninovich put the move on O'Connor on lap two and continued on for the win. Third went to Mertens, by inches over Weigand and Elkins. Laninovich returned to smoke the other 23 250cc Intermediates in both motos on his NCY/Burger King/Cryolab/FMF-sponsored YZ250. Reif and Weigand each had a runner-up finish; ReiPs was in the second moto, which broke the tie. Corey Macomber (4-4) and O'Conner (6-5) earned fourth and fifth, respectively. Team Green's Daton Beavers went wire to wire for the first Schoolboy moto win during GFI Racing's inaugural running of this class. A couple of crashes kept Beavers to an 11 th-place second-moto finish, while Patrick Terry held off Mickey Griffin for the second-moto and overall win. Jason Ciarletta went 2-3 for second, over the 4·2 of Griffin and the 6-4 of Anthony Bruscella. CN Jockson (KTM); 5. Ryan Galvez (Lem). 50 STK (7-8): I. Trevor Reis (Cob): 2. Mkhael Truglio (Cob); 3.
