Iowa Short Track By DAVE HOENIG PHOTOS BY FLAT TRAK FOTOS CEDAR RAPIDS, lA, JAN. 7-6 heckered Flag Productions brought the Outlaw Short Track series to the small concrete oval in the 5 Seasons Center. The track certainly put the circle back into circle track racing. Action was fast and furious, with many tight races and, as expected, many riders being lapped on such a short track. A liberal amount of cola syrup was applied, and multiline racing was possible. Wayne Kerns pocketed $600 after sweeping the A main event both nights. Friday night's racing kicked off with four heat races. The top three finishers moved to the A main, with everyone else going into a B main. Donnie Steward captured the first heat win, holding off a hard-charging Wes Beckman. Dale Jones captured the last transfer into the A main. The second heat was the only runaway of the night, as Kerns styled to an easy win. Mike Hinds withstood Tony Rulli's challenge for second. The third heat was extremely close, as Bob Ybema led all the way to the finish line, only to have Steve Pfalzgraf slip by in lapped traffic. The last heat was a close race between Joe Duvall, Dustin Klein and Steve Kasten. They ran nose to tail and finished in that order. The B main was a battle waged between Waterloo, Iowa, neighbors Steve Choplin and Bill Aegerter. Aegerter's ability to work through lapped traffic gave him the win over Choplin. In fact, Waterloo was home to the top four finishers, with Tom Mather and John Troupe rounding out the top four. The A main was a skirmish between Kerns and Pfalzgraf, whose rivalry dates back to their AMA Expert days in the late 1970s and early '80s. Pfalzgraf got the alI-important holeshot, with Kerns, Duvall, Beckman, Ybema and Hinds all bunched tightly behind him. Early in the race, Beckman was trying the outside line and, after making some contact, he fell in turn four. It became a two-rider race, as Pfalzgraf and Kerns started to catch the backmarkers. Traveling buddies Duvall and Hinds settled into third and fourth. Kerns was able to make the right moves, and he took the win right at the finish. Billy Berger was fifth, over Steve Kasten and pole sitter Donnie Steward, who had worked his way up to seventh after being left in last (Left) Wayne Kems (83K) swept the Outlaw Short Track's A main event on both nights at the 5 Seasons Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Rulli, Klein, Jones and Ybema rounded out the field. Saturday's race format remained the same. Bill Snyder grabbed the holeshot in the first heat, with Mike Simon, Choplin and Klein clawing for a way around. Snyder was able to hold on for the win, as Choplin and Klein sent Simon to the B main. Klein almost pushed his "Rich King Honda" into second but came up just short. Kerns was quick to prove that Friday's race was no fluke, as he ran away with heat two. Tony Rulli was a solid second over Joel Lacer. The third heat offered up the most fireworks of the weekend. Corey Vick and Dale Jones tangled in turn one, with both sliding down, bringing out the only red flag of the weekend_ Both riders restarted from the penalty line. Dave Hebb got the holeshot, but he couldn't hold off Kasten. Aegerter sent Pfalzgraf to the B. Late in the race, Jones slid down the front straight and through the announcers' and scorers' table; luckily, no one was hurt. Kasten came away with the win. By comparison, the last heat race was tame. Duvall led from wire to wire. Beckman closed at the end, but he settled for second, over Hinds. Ybema led the B main into turn one, ahead of Robert Tinnen, Pfalzgraf and Simon. Ybema and Pfalzgraf pulled away, and this time it was Pfalzgraf who benefited from lapped traffic - he got the lead on the last lap. Ybema was a close second, with Simon leading Billy Berger, Vick and Jones home. In the A main, Snyder rocketed from the pole position into the lead over Kerns, Duvall, Kasten and Hinds. Kasten spun down coming off turn two and was done for the night. Snyder was able to cling to the lead for a few laps before Kerns stormed by. This opened the floodgates, and Snyder faded. Fellow Oklahomans Duvall and Hinds moved into second and third, with Beckman a strong fourth. Rulli and Klein rounded out the top half of the field. Hebb, Choplin, Aegerter, Snyder and Lacer followed. eN eye I e 5 Seauas Celller Cedar IIlIpids, lowl Results: .bo1lllMY 7-8, 2DDO Friday A MAIN: I.Wayne Kerns (Yam); 2. Steve Pf.lzgr.f (Y.m): 3.
