later, Halpin repeated the move, leaping past Zornes to take control of the moto for good. Halpin went on to win the moto by 10 seconds, with Zornes hanging on for second and Sims moving into third. Halpin had to come from third place again in moto two in order to complete the sweep. Zornes' potent YZ once again carried him to the front down the start straightaway, with Sims battling Halpin for second place. This time, Sims was the first to get past Zornes. Then Halpin made his moves, and was running in front by the fourth lap of the five-lap moto. At least Sims and his immaculate '74 250 Elsinore kept this battle close. Halpin's second win came later in the day during the Evolution 2 class, which appears to be growing in popularity as evidenced by a nearly full gate. Ted Mink got the holeshot, but he quickly succumbed to Vintage Iron's Rick Doughty, who ran up front early on one of his immaculately prepared Maleo Megas, only to pull off late in the race when the bike Califomia dudes: John LeFevre (above) and Chartie Richardson (right) traded wins in the Pre-'72 ranks. LeFevre topped the 250·500cc Experts, while Richardson took the 125cc Expert win. started to make uexpensive noises/' according to Doughty. With that, Halpin pulled into the lead, only to be hounded by race promoter Zack McKinley, the owner of the track and himself a pro motocrosser. Halpin and McKinley diced to the finish, with McKinley eking out the win. In the second moto, Halpin's quest for the overall victory was never in doubt. He battled with David Fisher briefly before taking the lead and stretching his advantage with each lap. As impressive as Halpin's performances were, there were two Californians who battled back and forth in several classes during the day, each tasting victory. Vintage Husky guru John LeFevre and CR Racing owner and CZ expert Charlie Richardson butted heads in several classes. LeFevre and his '67 Husky 360 came up big in the Pre-'72 250-500cc ranks, leading Richardson to the flag in both motos, while Husky-mounted Michael Owens went 3-3 for third overall. Richardson struck back in the Pre- '72 125cc class, however, proving that a CZ 125 could be made to hustle as he went 1-1 over LeFevre, with Owens once again finishing third overall. Zornes and his nasty Yamaha came away with a victory in the Pre'75 500 ranks, while California's Harry Backer went 1-1 for the overall win in the Pre-'78 class. Perhaps the best show of the day was put on by D.J. Curtis in the Pre'75 250 class. Curtis absolutely thrilled his fellow riders and the spectators with his devil-may-care motorcycle flying en route to the class sweep. The last time Richardson's '74 Name. Mike Halpin. Agel 43.
