Glen Helen Raceway Park Baur blasts REM Saturday Motocross By ROCKY HASH SAN BERNARDINO, CA, DEC. 11 Week in and week out, one of the most com· petitive classes during Racing Enterprises Motorsports' weekly Glen Helen Saturday Motocross is the Vet Beginner division, and the season finale was no exception, as Yamaha rider Ken Baur had to battle hard in both motos to secure the overall victory on the day. In the first mota, Kawasaki jockey Gary Wilkinson took the holeshot. Baur positioned himself in second, and Steve Mangione jock· eyed his RM250 into third. Steve Sterns held down fourth, while Brian Pappalardo had his Yamaha running fifth at the end of lap one. On lap two. Baur new by Wilkinson to take over the point and then stretched out a three· second lead. Pappalardo passed Sterns for fourth. Mangione was still maintaining third, but soon Pappalardo was challenging him for the position. Just past halfway. Wilkinson began to fade backward. and Mangione and Pappalardo went past him, and the next time around, a rejuvenated Stems followed suit and moved him back to fifth. As the mota wore down, Stems inched forward, and soon he had joined the Pappalardo·Mangione skirmish for second. Out front, Baur was managing to stay about two or three seconds in front of the commotion behind him. With two laps to go, Sterns repassed Pappalardo for third, and then he began to badger Mangione for second. Mangione had a bad last lap, as both Sterns and Pappalardo found a way around him. Baur took the moto win. Sterns finished a strong second, while Pappalardo rode in third. Mangione settled for fourth, and late-charging Suzuki rider Billy McAllister filled out the top five. By the time the second moto got going. the high winds of the parly morning had died down. Pappalardo took advantage of this and blasted his YZ250 to a clean holeshot. Sterns ran in second, and Yamaha pilot Dan Watrud held down third. As the pack zipped through the scoring section for the first time, Baur rode in fourth, while Ted Flynn's Suzuki RM250 was fifth. Baur moved around Watrud on the first lap and took over third. Pappalardo looked smooth out front. but Sterns refused to let him get away. Soon, Baur had closed to join the fray, and the battle for the lead became a three-rider affair. Baur won the duel, slipping around Sterns just past halfway, and soon he was hounding Pappalardo for the lead. Meanwhile, Flynn was able to push past Watrud and into fourth. Pappalardo did what he could to keep the lead, but Baur was relentless. and he passed the Yamaha rider and took over the lead. Sterns was still close enough to do some damage. and soon he. too, was looking for a way around Pap· palardo. When the white flag came out. Baur had scratched out a one· second lead, while Pappalardo and Sterns were side by side. Baur rode past the checkers first for the win. Stems was able to stuff his Yamaha past Pappalardo during the last circuit for a sec· ond·place finish. Flynn finished up in fourth, while Watrud was able to hold off a late-charging Mangione for fifth. On the day, Baur's two hard-fought rnoto wins earned him the overall victory. Sterns was next best with his 2-2 finishes, while Pappalardo's 3-3 tally earned him the third-place brass. Mangione was fourth with 4·6 scores, and McAllister filled out the top five with his 5· 8 rides. Results 60 BEG: I. Ryan Miller (Hen); 2. Shllun McMahon (Kow); 3. Kenny Zeiss (Yam). 125 BEG: l.
