Corde r's pr ogr ession into the professiona l ran ks since placing th ird in the I25cc A class at the Lore tta Lynn's AMA Am ateur Na tiona ls has bee n' an impressive fea t: Three weeks ago, he wo n his first race as a Pr o in Te xas; then th e Raini er , O rego n, ride r backed u p that perform an ce by beating man y seasoned professio nals for a sweep of toda y' s 125 and 250cc Pro classes. Co rder had tough com petition from Oregon's Ryan Leach and Was hing ton 's Dan Moor e in the 250cc Pro class. Leach led mu ch of the firs t 250cc Pro moto, but Cord er used la pped rid ers to his ad vanta ge la te in th e moto to over ta ke th e local fa vorit e and earn th e first of his fou r mot a victo ries on the day. Cord er came back to a lso win mot a two, but he was u nd er heav y pressure.fro m Moore, the a tional number-97 plate holde r. Co rder's first overa ll win of the day came in the 125cc Pro class, in which he also faced stiff competition. FMF-backed Paul Conner and California n Ja rred . Fisher ran ahead of Corder in the firs t mot a , bu t after tw o laps Corder ha d overtaken bo th Fis her and Co nner to nab a lead he'd never relinquish. Mota two saw Conner 's Yama ha agai n lead in g the field, a lthough th is time Con ner's lead wou ld be of a mu ch shorter durati on, as Corder quickly overtook the Washi ngton ian, who wo u ld be bumped back another not ch as Moore put his Suz u ki quickly ahea d of Conner. Moor e, who cras he d in mot a one and recov ered to finis h fourth, this time se t ou t after Co rder, who earlv on had built up a substan tial lead on the field. Wit h each lap, Moore clawed his way closer to Co rder, and wit h th ree laps re m a in in g he ha d su bs tan tially na rrowed the gap. Moore ran in Cord er's sha dow for th e rem a ind er of the race, bu t th e ve te ra n Pro could n ' t m a ke a pass stick on the rooki e and was relegat ed to seco nd in the mota , ahead of Conner, whose 2-3 placings made him the recip ien t of second ove ra ll to Corder, but ahead of Moore's 4-2 tally. Suzu ki ri d e r Ryan M e t zl er rode impressively to his win of the combined 125 cc Interm ed iat e class, th ough th e new Intermedi ate rid er rod e in the shadow of several Pro rid ers. Metzler finalized his I-I sweep of the class with his rna to-two antics, followed by Californian Tyl er Laughridge (2-2), Washington 's Mike Scheel (3-3), Jeff Hinzman (44) and Suzuki rider Mike Smith (6-5)·. Corder and Leach spent th e entire firs t 250cc Pro moto in close proximity. Leach led while Corder pushed him u p until the next-to-last lap, when Corder saw an opportunity. "I saw a bunch of 'em (lappers) coming into view," Co rder explained later, "so I went wid e to set up a pass on Ryan and it worked ou t perfectly." Leach held on to second at the finish, followed by Moore, Fisher and Conner . (Left) Mike Corder (25) won the 125 and 250cc Pro classes at the ope ning round of the CMC Trans-Ca l Pacific Northwes t MX Series, held at Albany Motorspo rts Park In Oregon . (Above) Dan Moore (97) finis hed third in the 125cc Pro class, s econd in the 250cc Pro class, and first in the Vet Pro class. Moore g rabbed th e lead out of th e ga te in the second mota , bu t Corder quickly shoved a wheel inside of the Suzuki rider, and from that poi nt he led to the finis h, altho ugh he was dogged throug ho u t by both Leach and Moore. Leac h nabbed seco nd fro m Moore, bu t jus t as qu ickl y , th e Yam ah a rid er encoun tere d problems, a nd from th a t point Moore put a lock on the position . Moore narrowed the gap on Corder late in the mot a, a t one point on the final lap even puttin g a wheel ahead of the KX rid er , alt ho ugh Moor e' s stu nning perfor ma n ce woul d jus t as qu ickl y b e thwarted when he stalled his RM. "I had the pass ma de," Moore sai d . "I killed the motor in the comer - too mu ch brake a nd not enough clu tch." Co rder's sweep of the day was aided by Moore' s m is fortune, a lt hough th e young up-and -com in g rid er ' s perfo rmances on this da y wou ld be regarded as nothing sho rt of se nsa tional. Moore finis hed second ove ra ll (3-2), ahead of Fisher (4-3), Leach (2-5) and Conner (54), but Moore's day wasn't a to tal wash, as he would lat er co me ba ck to d ominate the Vet Pro class. Schee l, Laughrid ge , Metzl er and Todd Hinders spent mu ch of both of the 250cc Intermediate motos battling for su prem acy, but in the end Sch eel prevailed by virtue of his win in the second mota. Though the Suzuki-mounted Hinders had led mu ch of the race, he yielded to both Schee l and Metzler late in the mo ta , thus d ro p pi ng to fou rth overall be hi nd Scheel (2-1), Metzler (3-2) and Laughri dge (1-4), but ahead of Yamaha rider Nick Foister (6-5).
