Sanderson AUBURN, NY, AUG.21-22 h e Wh eel -A-Wa y M otorspo rt s Weekend o f Champions a t th e Fr o zen Ocea n Mot o cr o ss Pa rk attrac ted some of the bes t pro rid ers in the country . A weekend of great racing be gan w ith the Sta d ium cross N ight of Ch ampions o n Satu rday evening, w hic h fea tu re d a n $8000 Pro /Exp ert purse . Two eig h t- la p heats w ith eig h t rid er s ad va nci ng to th e m ain eve nt, a nd o ne la st -ch an ce qualifier with four rid ers ad vancing, w ere run in each of the Pro Expert clas ses . Casey Johnson w on the I S-lap 125cc main eve nt, and Brock Sellards , currently ranked second in th e 125cc Na tional C ha m p io nsh ip se ries, won the 250cc mai n event. Sellards had a ho rr end ou s crash in the first 250cc Open Expert mot o in Su nday's Day of C ha m pio ns race a nd suffered a firs tdegree shoulder separation . Ca rlo Co he n had the ea rly lead in the firs t 125cc Expert hea t race, tra iled by Jos h De mu th, C.W . Sirja ne , Ty Wa llace and Barry Carsten. De muth h ad th e p o in t position by ha lf w a y . Co hen d rop ped to second , Wallace moved to third , and Bar ry Carsten and Sella rd s ro unded out the top five. Demuth took the checkers, trailed by Co hen, Sellards, Carsten and Wallace. John son got the jump in th e seco nd 125cc heat and piloted his Yamaha of Troy YZ through the 9Q-degree first tum and never looked back. In tow were Doug Parsons, [ iri Dostal, Paul Carpenter and Da v id Kratz . Parson s had dropped out of the top five by halfway. Johnson too k th e win, followed by Carpe nter, Dos tal, Dieter and Kratz. Brian Austin ea rned holeshot honors in the first 250cc heat race but was quickIy passed b y Davie Yezek, Sella rds, Cohen and Jaso n Frenet te. Aus tin dropped to fif t h . Co hen had the poi nt position by the start of the nex t lap. Sellards cha rged to second, while Yezek was relegat ed to third . Demuth and Fren ette held on to fourth and fifth. Co hen took the wi n, followed by Sellards, Demuth, Yezek and Fren ette. It took Car penter one lap to ge t around Davis and take the lead . Davis d ropped to seco nd , Terlecki held third , Kratz mo ved up to fo u r th a nd Au stin dropped to fifth. Ca rpe nt er w on , tr ail ed by Davis, Terl ecki, Krat z and Joe Oehlhof. When the ga te dropped for the field of 20 rid ers in the 12Sec main event, Oehlhof was at the front, with Demuth, Carpenter, Co he n and John so n in tow. By lap two, Oehlhof had dropped ou t of the top five. The ru nn ing ord er was no w Demuth, Carpenter, Cohen, John son and Sellards. Joh nson go t aroun d Cohen for third on lap three. Cohen d ropped to four th. The to p five remained un cha n ged un til halfway, w hen Johnson passed Carpenter ' for second, d ropping Carpenter to third . Ju st before lap nine, Johnson fina lly got around Demuth for the lead . Cohen man aged to hold Sellards off until late in the race, when Sellards finally made the pas s for fourth. Johnson earned the top podium spo t an d the big bucks , with Demuth, Carpenter, Sellards and Cohen trailing. Walla ce took the point position ea rly in the 250cc Pro /Expert ma in eve nt. Rounding out the top five on the extremely fast first lap we re .Cohen, Paul Corey, Sellard s and Demuth. The running order remained the same until lap four, when Sellards, Demuth an d Carpenter passed Cory to take third, fourth and fifth. By lap eigh t, Cohen had taken the lead , with Sellard s, Demuth, Wallace and Yeze k tra iling. By lap 10, Demuth was u p front. Sellards hung on to second, Wallace moved up to third , Scot t Davis was fourth and Yezek fif th. By lap 12, Sella rds h ad worked hi s way into th e le ad , wi th Demuth, Co he n, Wallace and Yezek in tow. Sella rds took the w in, follow ed by Demuth, Wallace, Carpe nter and Davis. Su nday's Day Of C ha m p io ns ra ce featured mo st of the same Pro Experts from Satu rday' s even t. Local favo rite Paul Carpenter lined up all the way to the inside of the start in hopes of getting the holesh ot in the first 250cc O p en Ex per t m oto . W he n th e ga ted d ropped , though, it was Suzukim o unted Terlecki w ho nailed th e holesh o t. Kra tz we nt d own in th e firs t turn a nd ev en tually wo rked his way back fro m d ead last to ninth. Wh en th e pa ck began to clea r th e huge two-sto ry tab letop, Suzuki rider Bruce Stra tto n was in the lead , followed by Sellards, Terlecki , Wallace and Paul Austi n . Stra tto n a nd Sella rd s w ere so close th at w hen Stratton la u nched off the a nno u nc ers' tow er tab letop, he d rifted to the ou tside a nd nea rly bum p ed Sell a rd s . Ju s t bef ore la p six , Stratt on's fron t tire w ashed out o n th e lan d ing of a tabletop and spit him to the gro u nd . Sella rd s, w ithi n a bike leng th, was alr ead y in th e air an d on a collision co urse w it h th e downed Su zu ki. Sellard s' bik e T-boned the Suzuki, and Sellard s and his Hond a we nt cartwheelin g. Sellards eventually wa lked off the course under his own power, but he w as done fo r the day. Stra tto n, mean while, man aged to rem ou nt in the lead , wit h Terlecki moving up to second, Wa llace third, Davis fourth and Yezek now fifth . Stra tton managed to hold on for the win, follo wed by Terl ecki , Dav is, Wall ace and Yezek , Ca rpenter nailed the ho lesh ot in th e second 250cc Open Expe r t m ot o, with Terlecki, Yezek, Mi ke Dougherty a nd Frenette in tow. About ha lfwa y through the first lap, Yeze k passed Terl eck i for seco nd . Wallac e was now fourth a nd Frene tte fifth. Th e top five rem ained the sa me until lap four, w hen Da vis go t arou nd Fren ette for fifth. On the followin g lap, th ough, Davis pulled off with mechanical problems, a nd Kra tz to ok fifth . Kratz th en se t his sig hts on Wa llace and got him for fourth on the last lap . Carpenter took the mo to win wi th a four-second advantage. Ro und ing o u t the top five were Yezek, Terlecki, .Kratz and Wallace. Ter lecki earned the ov era ll with his 2-3 score. Carpen ter and Yezek ro unded ou t th e pod ium. Carpe n te r p il ot ed hi s Manch ester Hond a CR through the first tum first in the firs t 125ec Expert moto, wi th David Hill, Yezek , Wallace and Kratz in tow . By the e nd of th e second la p, Yezek had passed Hill for second . Carpenter had a la-second advantage by the start of lap . four , and he wa s the on ly rider doing the infi eld 85-foot tri ple. By the end of lap four , Hill, Kratz and Wallace had moved up to sec o nd, third and four th, w it h Yezek dropping ba ck to fifth . Just after the start of lap five, Kratz ma de the pass on Hill for second and set his sights on Ca rpenter. With two laps to go, Kra tz had knocked two seco nds off Carpenter's lea d . Ro und ing o u t the top five were Wallace, Yezek and Oehlhof. By the last lap, Kratz had red uced Carpenter's lead to six seco nds. Oe hlhof passed Yezek to claim fourth. With only hal f a lap to go, Kratz ma naged to cut Carpenter' s lead to four seco nds, but it was not eno ugh. Ca rpenter took the win, followed by Krat z, Wa llace, Oehlhof and Yezek. Oe hlhof earned holesh ot honors in th e second 125ee Expert moto but was soon relegated to second by a hard -charging Wallace. Rounding ou t the top five ou t of the first tu m were Stratt on, Mike Finnerty and Yezek . Oehlhof passed Wallace for the lead just befo re th e start of lap two. Wallace dropped to second . Stratton remained third, Yezek m ov ed up to fourt h and Carpenter was now fifth . By the start of lap four, Oehlhof w as still ou t fro nt, Walla ce was second, Yezek third, Carp enter fourth a n d Kr atz fifth . Halfway into lap four, Krna mad e a pa ss on Yezek for third, but Yezek passed him right back. Kratz then bega n to feel Car pent er pressuring him for fourth . Krat z managed to gel Yeze k back on lap five, drop ping Yezek to fourth. Wallace closed th e ga p on Oehlhof by th e last lap but could n' t ge t around him for the lead by the checkered flag. Oe hlhof too k the win , followed by Wall ace, Krat z , Yezek and Carpenter. Oehlhof's 4-1 score was good enough to earn him the o verall.
