Th e Centra l Yarnaha /lCS /No Fea r- backe d rookie a lso gave it his bes t sho t in th e 250cc A Expert event, chasing Plano Hond a / Pro Circuit's Brad Woolsey to the finish line in bo th motos to finis h seco nd . Mo re tha n 700 racers en tered the twoday event host ed by Swan Cycle Park in East Texas. Thi s was the firstA time tha t the a n n ual ser ies h a s kick ed off in August rather than in mid -Septem ber, Chase Reed wasn' t the only rookie in tlie 125cc A Expe rt class, w hich a lso in cl ud ed Na tha n H ale, Beau Bo vnton, Adam Mennen ga and Roger Thayer - all of w ho m m ad e th e m o ve a lo ng wi th Re ed a fte r th e A MA Lo r etta l ynn' s Amateur Nat ional Championship. Boynton miscued and dropped back to seventh, while Dwain Carter moved up a n o tch to th ird , fo llowed b y P la no Honda' s Grayson Goodman a nd Mennenga . Both Men nenga and Boyn ton g o t a ro u nd Goodman to race 'in [F 52 fourth a nd fif th, and th en Mennenga cha rged on Carter on the final la p to finish third behi nd Reed and Hal e. ' In the 250cc A Expert co ntes t, yo ung Chase Reed grabbed the holesho t, only to lose the lead in the w hoops to Plano Honda's Brad Woolsey. " I cased a ju mp and hit my chest o n the bars," said Reed. "My main goal was to keep raci ng, bu t it took me a few seconds to ca tch my bre ath." Woo lsey took advantage of the situation and pu lled away as Reed recovered , chased to th e checkers by Hale, Carter, Antho ny McVey and David Jon es. The secon d m oto , h o w e v e r , was ac tio n- packe d off th e s ta r t. Woo lsey nail ed the holesh ot , flanked by Reed and Hale. By the end of la p th ree, Reed wa s se tti ng up Woo ls ey fo r a p a ss in th e w hoops and go t by the lead er, only to see Woo lsey pass ba ck in the next tum. Reed powered up an d repassed Wool sey up the next hill, but Wo ol sey go t him ba ck again. From that p oint until the' . checkered flag, Reed stayed at Woolsey's ba ck tire, w aiting for th e mo re ex p erienced Pro racer to ma ke an erro r. But Woolsey rode flawlessly to the wi n . Team G ree n /Granbury Motorspo rts Kawasaki' s Clay Hoenshell earned th e Ironman Award of the day, competing in the fas t-paced 12Sec A Expert eve nt, finishin g 4-5, and then immediately retu rning to the ga te for the Ov er 30 A event, grabbing the holeshot in both motos and taking b o th m o to w ins! H oe n sh ell showed the way to the checke rs to Shawn Ma rtin, Jerry Join er, Kevin Horn ick, Jerr y Joiner a nd Donni e Elmer. Hoen s hell's seco nd- mo te holesh o t put him ou t front from start to finish, once aga in chased by Mar tin and Joiner, w ith Elme r in fourth. S teve H ill a bsco nded wi th th e holes hot in the first mot o of the O ver 30 Int ermediate class, wi th Dan Mar ino in the hunt. Hill crashed, and Marino took over the lead and led int o lap tw o, but Adam Cox, was o n fire a nd mad e th e pass for the lead and held it to the finish . Marino d id his best to han g o n to second, bu t he was pressured by Bruce Sta ples . Sta ples go t a line o n Marino o n th e fourth lap and passed into second an d then wen t a fte r Co x, bu t he w as unable to move up one more spot before the end of th e m ot o . l ee Up to n gate d sixt h and pe gged off so me po siti ons to finis h fou rth, followed by Tom Hudson, Mitch Milson and Jim Ca mpbell, Sta p les won the seco nd m o to and too k the overa ll w ith his 2-1 punch. Second-place honors w en t to Cox , with a 12, w hile Up ton used a 4-3 for third and Marino a 3-5 for fourth. Hudson cappe d off fifth w ith a 5-4 tall y. Some 31 racers lined the ga te for the first 125cc B Int erm ed iate moto. Waylo n McCulloch led the pack to the first turn. Th is w as McCulloch 's firs t ride on the big bike, having retired his YZ80 afte r loretta l yn n' S earli er in th e m onth .
