Del Mar Golf Tournament Benefiting the Morais' larceny of the Bounty By Brandon Gilles LOSBANOS, CA JULY17, 1999 , Yamaha rider Rya n Morais ran off "v ith the California Motocross Associatio n / Clawson Me te rsports Bou nty Hunter Series win , conqu e rin g t he track at the Los Banos Fairgr ounds wit h suc h perfection that he wa s un stoppable for mo re than the last half of the race. Star ting towa rd the back of the pa ck as the flag drop ped , Mo rais qu ickly started down his road to victo ry . He now had just one simple task a hea d: to pa ss more than half of the pack . Morais had to work hard from the st art to d o th is, a nd it paid o ff. By the com pletion of the second la p, he had crawled ou t of eighth place and in to fourth , By the th ird la p, he had once ag ain cut his positi on in half. He now fou nd himself in seco nd pla ce, behind Honda-mou nted Turbo Reif. Reif howe ver, wo u ld not g ive u p easily. He held Morais off for the next two lap s, but by the fifth he was ove rcome . Morais, now in first place, had sta rted to gai n a tre mend ous lea d on the rest of the pa ck, Perhaps the rid er w ith th e best cha nce of bea ting Mor ais was Su zuk i rider Jeff Pes tan a. Pestana , like Morai s; had also started toward the rear of the pack. He had slowly used the first six la ps to move up to third place. With Reif d rop pin g in posi tion , Pestana w as righ t on Morais' tail, and withi n two la ps he was in secon d place. He then made several a ttem p ts to pass Morais th rou ghou t th e remain in g fiv e laps but wa s un successful. Pestana finish ed in seco nd place overall . Mak ing a recov er y, Reif was st ruggling to hold his p lace in th ird . Kawa saki jockey Craig Trug lio was ma king that d ifficult.
