Morais' larceny of the Bounty
By Brandon Gilles
LOSBANOS, CA JULY17, 1999
,
Yamaha rider Rya n Morais ran off "v ith the California Motocross Associatio n / Clawson Me te rsports Bou nty Hunter Series win , conqu e rin g
t he track at the Los Banos Fairgr ounds wit h
suc h perfection that he wa s un stoppable for
mo re than the last half of the race.
Star ting towa rd the back of the pa ck as the
flag drop ped , Mo rais qu ickly started down his
road to victo ry . He now had just one simple
task a hea d: to pa ss more than half of the pack .
Morais had to work hard from the st art to d o
th is, a nd it paid o ff. By the com pletion of the
second la p, he had crawled ou t of eighth place
and in to fourth , By the th ird la p, he had once
ag ain cut his positi on in half. He now fou nd
himself in seco nd pla ce, behind Honda-mou nted Turbo Reif. Reif howe ver, wo u ld not g ive
u p easily. He held Morais off for the next two
lap s, but by the fifth he was ove rcome . Morais,
now in first place, had sta rted to gai n a tre mend ous lea d on the rest of the pa ck,
Perhaps the rid er w ith th e best cha nce of
bea ting Mor ais was Su zuk i rider Jeff Pes tan a.
Pestana , like Morai s; had also started toward the
rear of the pack. He had slowly used the first six
la ps to move up to third place. With Reif d rop pin g in posi tion , Pestana w as righ t on Morais'
tail, and withi n two la ps he was in secon d place.
He then made several a ttem p ts to pass Morais
th rou ghou t th e remain in g fiv e laps but wa s
un successful. Pestana finish ed in seco nd place
overall .
Mak ing a recov er y, Reif was st ruggling to
hold his p lace in th ird . Kawa saki jockey Craig
Trug lio was ma king that d ifficult. Tru glio forced
his way up to Reif by the fifth lap , bu t he could
not pass, and finished in fourt h p lace. Finishing
in fifth was Nathan Woods.
