JULY10 Jimmy Eberle and Ed Bern al overca me so me stiff competition to walk away with the 125cc Nov ice and Ve t Novice ove ra ll w in s, respec· tively, at Los Angeles County Racew a y during the Nationwide Cycle-sponsored rou nd of California Racing Club's Sat u rday night mot ocross. After escaping with the first 125cc Novice mo ta holeshot, Ebe rle ca me und er fire from Nick Butterworth and Jay Bonanno on lap tw o. The th ree fro n t-runners e ngaged in a p re tty good ba ttle ove r the lead for the next few laps , until Bonanno lost his back brakes and shot off th e tr ack, m aki ng it a tw o-rid er da sh to the checkers that Eberle wo uld win. Bonann o recovered to still finish third, ah ead of Shaun Trabert and Gerard Patin. Trab er t p u t the lone Kawasa ki in the field into the point po sition wh en the ga te dropped in round two, but it was Butterworth running ou t fron t wit hin half a lap. Eberle div e under Tra d bert at th e base of the ove r-and-u nde r sectio n for second place, and then set out after Butterw orth. Eberle was slowly reelin g in Butt erw orth whe n the latter collided with a tapper and was un able to continue . Eberle went on to take th e win over Bona nno, who was closing in during the fina l la ps but ran out of time. Trabert held o n for third and th ird overall, topp ing the 5-l of Patin. Joe Casagrande and his YZ250 won the drag race to the first tum in the opening Vet Nov ice rnot o, but his lead was short-lived , as Bernal wa s in control af ter one circuit of the jump-fill ed .. and tra ck. Bernal quickl y put a few seco nds on Casagrande, who had his hands full with Todd Smart. Smart fina lly wor ked his way a rou nd Casagrande, and the tw o of them caught Bernal on the last lap . It was Berna l with the win , wit h Sma rt and Casagra nd e liter ally in his shad ow for second and third, res pecti vely. Bernal gated in second place behi nd Smart in rou nd two, a nd it wou ld tak e him nearlv three laps before he was able to stick a wheel un~d er the YZ400-mounted rider to tak e th e lead. Sma rt stu ck with Bernal for a lap before Bernal settled into a pace that SOlW him gra d ually pull awa y for a swee p of the class. Casagrande spen t the moto working up from a bad start to pressure Sma rt on the final circuit for second place, bu t it was too little, too late. Ray RitzIer and Hu saberg-rnounted Darren Schmidt rounded out the top five. Results P IW YAM BEG: I. Ma tt bcw Popp (Yilm) ; 2. Dani e l Denrro , (Yam) ; 3. Dry Stacy (Ya m ). P/W BEG : I. Langley had previously sa id tha t the 1998 even t would be the last, but man y people enc ou ra gl'd him to pu t on ano ther ride here . . The ride started and finished each da y at the US . Forest Service's Crane Valley Group Camp- ground, where free camping was includ ed for the event's participants. About ha lf the riders camped , a nd the rest sta yed at nea rby mo tels. From the campground, it was only two mites of pa vement to where the dirt roa ds and trails began. A few nasty ruts near the start got the ad renaline pumping. Later, the riders found out they wou ld get two more visits through the ru ts, as this was the best way out of and back into camp . Susan McCartney was participating in her first dual-sport ride with he r husband, Dave. On the way back in, jus t three miles from the finish. her XRl 00 got swa llow ed up by one of the ruts. Her only bad inciden t o f the day d id no t d iscou rage her from riding on Sunday. At th e seco nd ha rd wa y / eas y wa y split, se veral rid ers op ted for the easy way, beca use the roll chart sai d there would be 2-foot-diameter-log jumps and a deep water crossing. However, th e logs had been cleared, and the water was not quite so d eep. Th e hard wa y turned out to be not as cha llenging as described. Curt's Big Rock -Trail was next , a nd e veryo ne got to ride it. "1 lov ed th e Big Rock tr a il," said Pat rice Payne, abo ard her XR400 . " It' s a rea lly fun ro ute." . "None of the hard ways was any more challenging than Curt's Big Rock Trail," said Rocky Raun. "And it was tou gh only for begin ners ." The gas and lunch stop took place at Ca lvin Tay lor's Sun ny Meadows Wild ernes s Ran ch. I~ was built by the Van Nes s family of San Fra ncisco in the 185Os. Later it was a stagecoach stop for travelers on th eir way to Yosem ite. From the lunch stop, the route went past a co up le of s mall la kes , th en into th e Mi ami Mountain motor cycle trai ls area. At the Kamook Stag ing area, the roll chart had most riders confused due to conflicting instructions . The shortcom ings of the roll chart were quickly forgotten, as nobod y wanted to miss a n inch of the great trail s by bailing out on the high way. The next reset was ju st seve n mit es away at th e Fish Creek General Stor e. It was easy to find, and eve ryone wa s abl e to ge t back on track. From there , the rou te went up by the southern border of Yose mi te Na tio na l Park. .When the co urse reached a n eleva tion of 7500 feet, many riders wonder ed whether th ey sho ul d have brought along their jackets . But then it was all downhill for 30 miles , past Fresn o Dome and back to the finish at 3000 fet.'!. At Sat urda y even ing's barbecue dinner, Bill Thomas celebrated his 60th birthday after riding his 1999 Yamaha WR400. "I loved th e course," sa id Thomas, "except for thed ust.n Ma ny riders sa id that because there we re onl y 75 pa rticipants, they could sprea d out we ll and tha t the dust was qu ite tolerable. Sunday mor ni ng's route started o u t wi th seven miles along the edge of Bass Lake before head ing into some awesome tra ils in the mountains. The wo rds "obscu re" a nd "fain t" cou ld also be used to d escr ibe some of the m. Lunc h and gas we re a t th e Jon es Sto re , wh ere John Alkema and Cornelius Van Der Eyk said , "We liked Sunday's ride more becau se of better trails a nd more s i ngil.~ track." Bill Hadsell suffcrt.>d a tum -signal meltdown but gained an imi tat io n carbon-fi ber mu ffler bracket wh en the nut came loose a nd th e tum signal at tac hed itself to th e muffler. Sea n Lefbridge and Joe l' ilc e agreed . >tl "We lov ed the single- track traiJs, a nd it's quit e a bit cooler here tha n back ho me in Las Vegas," Sean said.
