On I.lp three, Stevenson was close to Yoho's rear whl.Cl. On lap six, he mad e a surp rise pass ' o n Yoho , w ho qu ickly retook the lead as the white flag fl~w . Meanw hile, Shutt leworth was on ,1 tear, slicing his wa y throu gh the field, p.elssing Woods late in the mota. Pedrero had bike troubl e and dropped ou t. Renner also exit ed the track early. Field held sixth, while Dieter had worked his way into sev· enth. Higgins was beginning to lose his lead , as Coon and Oehlhof closed the ga p and began an amaz ing three·bike battle for th e top s po t. Mea nwhile, Diete r had managed to pass Field a nd was dosing the gap between him self a nd the Ghid iu-Wondrack battle. Finally, Coen passed Higgins and began to pu ll away. Oehlhof finally passed Higgins by grabbi ng the inside line in a corner. OehIhof then set out afte r Cocn, a nd on the last lap he was able to challenge him, but Oehlhof bobb led for jus t a ,"-'COnd , givi ng Coe n the <>dge he need · ed to pu ll away for the win . Oe hlhof took secon d, and Higgins third . Diet~r had caugh t up to Ghidiu and Wa nd rack, a nd he ma naged to pass the latte r on the last lap. At the finis h, Ghid iu took fourth and Dieter fifth. In th e seco nd mo ta, Coen agai n took th e holeshot, with Ochlhof, Dieter and Peter Falconi following. Higgins got a mid pack start and had to wo rk his way up to the front. Cos t opc nl.--d up a lead , letting Oeh lho f and Dieter battle for second . Th er e was a fou r-bike battle for fo u rth between Falcon i, Wondrack, Higgins and Gary Michael. Wand rack passed Falconi, as di d Higgins , and the two began their own battle. Hig gins pull ed off a triple, givi ng him an edge over Wondrack. and he moved into fourth . Up fron t, Oehlhof had sla rted to pull awa y from Higgins a nd ca tch up to Coen. The tw o had a n intense back-and-forth battle un til Caen got Ochlhof by laking an inside line in a comer and regaining the lead . Cocn took the win, followed by Oeh lhof , Dieter, Higgi ns a nd Wond rac k. The d o u bl ~ mo to win gave Coen the overa ll, while Oehlhof took second. Fortner continued his perfect D-17 season in the 600cc class wi th a scorchi ng 2.790-seco nd first-ro und rid e on his CR500, slipp ing und er young Mark Goodman Jr., who had d elivered a fine 2.890 time to ta ke the ea rly lead . Fortn er was also a d oubl e class winner, also taking the Stock-dass win wi th a 3.908-second first-round ride on his CR250. Results PERRIS,CA, JULY 10 Sha ne Bess won both motos to score first overall in the high ly competitive Su pe rm ini class at round thr ee of the Hot Summe r Nigh t Series at Perris Race w a y. Whe n t he ga te d ro p pe d, it looked like t he ho leshot would fall to t he smooth style of Tyler Dunca n, but going around the ou tsid e of the first co rne r was Shane Bess, flyi ng w id e o pe n into t he ea rly lead. Ch ase Meine ke an d Ja red " The Jet " Bro wn fou nd thems elves battling for third. Dunca n was d oing everything he cou ld to kl-cp Bess in his sights, but the more eXpt'rienced and qu icker Bess was nowhere to be foun d . M ~an whil e, Brown and Meinek e we re still close, but Brown a ppea red to be contro lling the third pos ition. At the checkered flag, it was Bess with a command ing lead and Duncan in se co nd , wi th Brow n a n d Meinek e rounding out the top four . In the second mota, Dunca n too k the early lead , with Bess in hot pursuit. Duncan was able to hold the lead for a couple of laps, but with Bess busting out I.lp times like those in the 125ee Intennediate class, it did n't take long for Bess to go into the lead and pu t some d ista nce on Duncan a nd the rest of the field . At the chec kered flag.. it was Bess, Du ncan, Brown and Meineke. In the l2Scc No\ice class, birthday boy Scott BUll reI! ga ve h imself the ho les hot. Kevi n Ho lmes was St.~ n d . Vito Tar antin o and Israel Ochoa battled for third . Ochoa mad e quick work of Tara ntin o and joined the battle for the lead. Wh ile BUll reIl hel d off Ho lm es a nd Ochoa, smo ke began to blow from ButtreIl"s bike and it a p p ea red to be los in g po wer . Hol mes took advantage of BUllreIl's bad luck, and Ochoa followed . M eanwhil e, Ta ra n t in o went d own, allowing Micki Griffi n to set his sig hts on the leaders. At the end , Ochoa got by Holmes for the win, wi th Griffin coming in second and Holmes fad ing back to third . Rick La kin slip ped into fourth. Moto tw o didn't ha ve as much drama, as Buttrell was out with bike prob lems and Ochoa had probl ems as well. Griffin took the holeshot and never looked back.
