Most of the excitement ca me fr om th e 80cc Begi n ne r cla ss, as Suz u ki sorcere r David Blair swe pt the rest of his class und er the mat. This almost effortless victory for Blair had the crowd on its fee t. It all s ta r ted w ith Blair' s w in in th e fir st mot a . From the st ar t of the race he held fir st place. Directly behind him was Kawasaki jockey Nathan Hollister, wh o challenge d Blair on several occasions in the firs t mota, unsuccessfully . He wo uld finish second. On the third lap, John Tucker, on a Yama ha, had his third-place position swiped ou t from un der him by Kawa saki ride r Kris Bunch , However, Tucker regained the position by the next lap . With three laps rema ining, he made many attempts to ca tch up to sece nd -placed Hollister and pass him. This was not going to happen. After falling on thelast lap, Tucke r dropped back to second-to-last place, where he wou ld finish . The d oor was now open for Bunch to reclaim third . In the second mote, Blair once again main tai ned first place, but this time without a chal lenge from Nathan Holli ster. Hollister started way back in last. This time, Tu cker held second, and he would be untouchable for the rest of the race. Tucker had just on e rid er to worry about - David Blair - and by this point he was almost out of sight. Honda rid er David Moles was also in good sta ndi ng s for the first thr ee laps. in third directly behind Tucker. Things then started to go wrong . On the four th lap. he had dropped a position. an d by the fifth he ha d fallen all the way back to sixth place. Bunc h now had an opportunity to gai n a position, and he man aged to scurry into third p lace on the fou rth lap but, like Moles, he took a t u rn for t he wo rse. Bunch finis hed in 11 th , behind Moles. It was no w Yamaha rid er Nick Bal sdo n 'a tu rn to gain in the s ta nd in g s . Followed by Honda-moun ted Dayton Hix, Balsd on moved into th ird . Balsd on lost Hix when he was passed on the last lap by Hollister, who had managed to climb out of last place and into fourth by the last lap. Hix finished in fifth. behind Hollister, who wa s third, and Balsd on , w ho was fou rt h. Blair took first. with Tucker following in second.
