After high -sid ing the bike on the seco nd lap of the firs t heat while trying to get around Jeff Watters. McAfee we nt on to win in the remaining heats to take the overall win. Cod y Stone took fifth . In the Ope n Expe rt CIass C race, " O ldTimer" Tom Sherma n, o n his 600cc Rotax, won th e exciting main ev ent on the quar ter-mi le track. Hon da-mo unted Dan Knudsen was leadin g the ma in until he go t loose comi ng o u t of tum tw o and almost did the top tank-slapper of the nig ht, jus t barely straigh tening it out fo r tum three. Knudsen fin is hed second to Sherman, with Cod y Stone taking third. Fourth went to Carley Sherman, Tom 's d aughter, on her Honda, a nd ftfth went to Yamaha-mounted Rich Clark. Curry got the start from the 30, but the red flag cam e out and warnings were issued to the 5O--yarders. On the next try , both Curry and Faria-- slowed up immedia tely af ter the start, sensing the uneven s ta rt and eXJX'Cting , red flag , w hich they got. The thi rd try was indeed a charm and Curry was again th e firs t rider to tum o nc. Fis her s tayed rig ht w it h C u rry 3S th e six rid er s ci rcled th e tricky, clay-banked ova l for the first time . Faria was the first of th e bac k-ya rdage guys to get away an d he soo n attacked the outs ide d irt line, loo king to pull aro und Fis her and then Curry . Hedden also tried the outside but wasn' t mak ing u p much ground, and eventually finished sixth . At the com pletion of the firs t turns of the third la p, [anniro s uddenly s ho t up be tween C urry and Fisher, splitting the tw o an d sen di ng Curry toward th e o utsi de hay-bal e line. Fish er bare ly held the lead , and [a nniro conti nued the attack. as the two too k the w hi te flag. Co ming out of tum two for the fina l time, Jan niro hit a dry spot and had to send his Jawa into save mod e, w hich left FIs her clearly in the lead . Fisher di d n't fa lter the res t of the way a n d ha d t he wi n o n his RMC / T ho mpson Plati ng / Bill Cody / A ubu rn Outdoor Sports [awa, Janniro held on to seco nd . Faria ga rne red th ird . C urry reco vered to finish fourth, aod Bast was fifth. In the Scratch main , Fa ria dre w t he pole. Hedden was sta tioned in lan e th ree , and Fish er drew the outside. Wh en the sta rt ing tapes flew , so di d Faria. The cagey ve te ra n was o u t to a multip le -b ik e -Ie n gt h advantage before the race reached the seco nd set of turns. Curry was seco nd off the line a nd held the runner -up spo t until midway th ro ug h the seco nd lap, when he parked coming ou t of tu m tw o, allowing Fish er to tak e o ver th e pu rsuit. By th e halfwa y point, Ca rroll had a co mfortable tu-seco nd lead , onlv to stall his bike, which allowed Jam es Jenkins 'and J.B. Pee k to run one-two. Jen kins we nt down a sho rt time later, wi th Peek glad ly acce pti ng the lea d , a nd the firs t mo to win . Ca rroll go t bac k around Jenkins to finis h seco nd . Phillips ree le off a no ther holeshot to lead d round two, bu t by the end of the o pening lap it was a battle between Jen kin s and Ca rro ll for the top spot.
