Snyder RAWLINGS, MD, jUNE28 The final rou nd of the Ironman Ha re Scramble Series was held at Cliffside Off-Road Par k, and more than 130 motorcycle racers lined up for the event. As the firs t wave of riders was released , a cloud of du st formed that red uced vision to just a few feet. The 7.5-mile course was laid ou t with several vir gin secti ons and includ ed some new hillclimbs that proved to be quite a challenge to some of the rid ers. A big d ownhill also intimidated mo re than one rider. By d ay s end , man y of the corners had a berm of powd er like d ust tha t was at least six inches dee p, which caused some front wheels to wash out. To mak e th ings exciting, the Western Mary land Off Road Ride rs provided a $700 Expert pu rse, which was to be pa id out to the top five Expert riders for their overall finishes. In th e Open A class, Kawasa k i's Jas o n Raines took the holeshot, which kept him out of the d ust until lat er , w hen he bega n to lap rid ers . Rain es came th rough the scoring ba rre ls on the firs t la p w ith a lea d of 34 seconds on Su z u ki' s Ron n ie Burnfi eld. John Ru the rford wa s the th ird rid er th rough the barrels on the first lap. He was followed by Yama ha-mo u nted Scott P hi llips and Hond a r id er A n d ri s Lag zdins. On the second lap, Raines still hada lea d on Burnfield an d Ru th erford , bu t KTMmo unted Bria n Keega n had moved fro m eigh th pla ce to fourth place, and Thomas Leupen had bro u gh t his Kawa saki to fif th pl ace. On th e fou rt h lap , Raines and Burnfi eld we re still the to p two, but Keeg an had mov ed in to third p la ce , Su z u k i-mou n ted Je rem y Morris h ad moved into fo u rt h p lac e, a nd La gzd in s had ta ken back fifth p lace. Rain es has won every rou nd of the se ries, making him the und isp u ted cha mpion of the Iron man Har e Scramb le Series. In the Vet class, Kawasaki-mounted Donald Belt took the lead on the first lap, on ly to drop ou t after com pleting only two hIPS' Belt was followed by Suz uki-moun te Eric Weilan d, KTMd mounted Ra y Owens, Kawa sak i r ide r Sco tt Fontaine a nd KTM rid er Patrick Ha nshew. On the second lap, Suzuki-moun ted Ron ald StelZ moved into first p lace, wh er e he rema ined for the rest of the race.
