What I need to do is ride hard and consistent " Back for revenge on the short track, Barber clearly had his work cut out for him, as he was last off the star ting line. Barber quickly mad e up for lost time as he passed two riders' and then cha rg ed aft er McWh ir ter and Moore. By the halfway flags, Barber had ~ositioned himself strategically on the outside groove and moved into first with a gu tsy pass . Once in first, Barber paced himself and rode smoothly to victory . "1 kn ew I had to ma ke time and not make a mistake," Barber said . "After a lot of laps. I was able to ge t ahead of Nick (Moore) and Jar ed (McWhirter) by maki ng. p.ss on the ou tside . Once in first. I was able to ride a safe line and. win the race." Open B rider Matt Proto powered his Rota x to a d ecisive win on the short tra ck despite a midrace cha llenge from Bil ly Hiles . Proto methodically worked his way up to the front of the mid d le of the pa ck to take the lead about four laps into the finale. Although Hiles rod e his Rota x agg ressive ly, Proto rod e smoothly and won by a large marg in. In what was cxJX oo to be a major bat tle in 'Ci the Open A short -track m. in eve nt. Rob D.mron and Mar k Corsetti proved to be too quick for the sta rte r and were ban ished to the penalty line.. Jorgensen poured on the coal and passed Souza for the le. d dow n the back stretch. JUNE 18 Team Thor /Hond a ride r Jeff Willoh was awarded the Dobbas Cu p for being the top rider in the lnternation al Riders Helpin g Peop le Pro Cha llenge by virtue of his swee p of all the 12Secand 250cc Pro races at the El Dorad o Cou nty Fairgro u nds. Througliout the d ay , Willoh battled Team Green ride r Brett Racine and Jake Wind ham, as well as a dozen other Na tiona l competi tors and regional favori tes . Willoh see med. right at home, quickly surging int o the lead a nd roo st ing aw ay to win han d ily over Brett Racine and Aaron Burns in bot h 125cc Pro moto s. Althou gh the top three sp rea d o u t a nd pulled away fro m the ot he rs ea rly o n, th e ac tion was more heated in th e group that followed . as Kenny Bell. Daniel Blair and Ier rad Fisher had a close race, mixing it up each time out to finish fou rt h, fifth and si xth overall. respectively. The 250cc Pro class boas ted even more riders than the sm all-bore class and featured several hometown heroes , including local favori te Jake Wind ham, who grabbed the holeshot an d led the start with Racine, w illoh, Fisher, Andy Greg. Cliff Cook, Shawn Frailing and J.R. Mason in tow. As in the 125cc racing, Wiltoh made quick work. of his opposition and was soo n running his own race ou t front . Racine quickly jumped in to second place, where he held fast, Just a few seconds behind the leaders, Windham and Fisher had a good battl e for the dura tion or the moto before FIShersecured the third-place spot. In the end it was Willoh first. followed by Racine and Fisher. Placerville's Windham, Gregg and Cook gave the local fans plenty to cheer abou t with thdr fourth -, fifth- and sixth·place finishes . The crash slowed several rid ers w ho we re close beh ind . Out front, Willoh and Wind ham roosted away, unaffected by all the com motion behind them. Racine also mad e it through the early ma y hem unsca thed and settled into third place, where he stayt,d for ' the d ura tion. At the checkered flag, Willoh had notched ano the r win , followed by Win dh.m, Racine. Greg and Cook. Amat eu r racing was highlighted by a great turnou t of SOcc racers . In the first SOce Novice moto, it was all Bobby Bap tis ta. Bapti st a ran away and h id from the pa ck. Tho mas Bush ey . chased Bap tista across the line in the first moto, followed by Rory R.,dovich, Dann y H.rris and Ryan Ferris. Baptista came out on top again in the second mot o. w it h Fer ris a close second . Bus hey was th ere next for third p lace , with Radovich and Harris rou nding ou t the top five. Tony Sherma n piloted his 'Yamaha to wins in both 80cc Beginner division-one mo tos, taking the win over Matt Sullivan and Cra ig Adee. In the 80ce Beginner divisio n-tw o contest, Beau Wit'gant too k hom e firs t ov erall, co mi ng in ahea d of Cor}' Penni ngton, Larry Azevedo, Mike Harrison and Cary Tiede. JUNE11 Cory Keeney was once aga in the victor in the Pro class a t th e Minnesota Sta te Su percross Championship, as he took home the bulk of the coveted 51000 Pro-class purse. The ev ent wa s the third in the six -rou nd series an d attracted just over 1000 spectators and 130 race entries. As usual. door prizes - including Sco tt goggle'S and Spy SungIaSSL'S - WC"Te handed ou t to lucky racers at the riders' meeting. Rain d uring the week kept the track in mint cond ition for the evening's program, as du st was none xistent and the dirt was great for traction: The jump contest saw a huge upset as Brett Ohland , 14, wowed th e crowd with a perfect heel-clicker, beati ng the show -stopper himse lf. vetera n Pro speeds ter Keeney. In Pro-class racing, Keeney was clearly in a class all by himself as he rode perfectly smoo thly on his new Pro Action /RBP/FMF/Xt remebacked CR25O. Keeney grabbed the holes hot in the heat race i n front or Lee Theis' Sin isa lo /Cities Edge Sp or ts /Factnry Co nnec· tio n-s pons o red KX250, a nd Cra ig Schwa rz' s CR250. Kelley hot at Hardrock By Kyle Myers OCALA. FL.JU '[J NE David Kelley was the man to beat .t round 14 of the Sunshi ne State Cha mpio nship series, held at Hardrock Cycle Park. Kelley, who h. s not raced since September of 1998. waxed the field in the Over 30 di vision on a borrow ed RM125. Just over 280 riders competed on the hilly course in a contes t that was relegated to just one mota after a se ri o us th u nd ers to rm came th rou gh a nd soaked the track.
