By Elaine J one s
cosrAMESA,CA, JUNE 26
The peo p le w ho rem ember jack Miln e remember him as the inspi ratio n behind United States
Speed way racing. What more fittin g perso n to
win the Miln e C u p than jack's gra nd nep he w
Gary Hicks, and what better presenter of the
Q ueen's Coronation Cu p originally won by Jack
in Wembley , Englan d, in 1937 before 93,000 fans,
than his grand daughter Catherine Lopez?
The forma t was all Scratch racing - five rid ers, four laps . Points were awa rded by finishes.
The top 10 in points.. moved to the sem is.
Hicks started his night off in winn ing fash ion by top pin g the field in this round of qua lifying. The sec ond heat was won by Scott Brand t,
and Brad Oxley took third- heat honors.
In secon d -round action, Hicks again won his
heat as Bobb y Schwa rt z, Brant a n d Andy
Nort hru p all won their respective hea ts as well.
With two rou nds in the books, Hicks and Bran t
were tied with perfect scores . Oxley, Venegas
and jim Este.. followed.
Bra n t p ull ed off ye t anot he r win in th e

Schwartz a nd Ermol cn ko won heats th ree and
four .
In the first semi race, Venegas again beat out
Hicks, bu t both still headed for the main, while
Estes and John Ade n hea ded for the Iast-d1ance
qualifier. Oxley beat out Brant in the second
semi, bu t it was Northrup and Schwartz who
headed to the LCQ. Nort hrup later transferred
ou t of the LCQ and into the main to fill out the
progra m.
The lineup for the mai n had the pole going
to Brant. Venegas was in lane n vo a nd Hicks got
his lucky thIl"C spot. Northrup was;n four and
Oxley was on the outside in five. The gate we nt
up a n d Hick s a nd Brant w e n t out toge t he r .
Oxley sp un out in the first tum, an d that was
just the bt.-ginning,. as Vent.-gas got too sideways
in three and abo spun around . The bike hooked
and hit Nort hru p, and Hicks had no choice but
to go ove r it. The red flag came out a nd a comp lete restart was called, since all the exciteme nt
happened on the first lap and more than half the
field wen t down.
On the restart , it was agai n Brant a nd Hicks
who we nt out togeth er. All five rid ers swa pped
paint as they exited tu.m two, bu t it was Hicks
who had the lead , and once there, he was not to
be denied . Bra nt tried every thing he knew bu t
the night belonged to Hicks. Oxley a nd Venegas

It was a clea r but hot d ay at Field of Dreams

Berkey had his wo rk cut out for him in the

Berkey p ulled ahead ove r the finis h-line jum p.
After obtai ni ng the lead , Berkey continued to
pull on the rest of the pack. The on ly battle left
was for second, as Stofko overpowered McHugh
on the big step- up and pu lle a little lead befo re
d
the checkered flag.
Another exciting moto to watch was in the
125ccA class. In the second mo te, Stephen Crowe
took the holcshot and the eventual win . Brad
