By Hom er Eu banks
RAMONA, CA, JULY 4
Shau ll Con ne lly mastered the Supermini class
with the help of his new , ex tra-fast Yam aha at
Baron a Oaks Raceway.
. Josh N avarro has domina ted " ost of the se am
son, but he foun d the Yamaha-mounted Connelly unca tch~ble in both motos.
In the firs t mote, Navarrowas first off the
gMe and held th e lead while Co nn elly was back
in four th . Connelly took the third spo t during
the first lap. Connelly's next move was to power
th rough the whoop section for second. Connelly
had to follow Navarro for three laps before out dis tan cing him over th e flagpole jump. Once out
front, the charged-up Connelly pulled away and
led the field to the checkered flag:
Joe y Navarro absco nded w ith the holes ho t in
the seco nd race and, once again, Conne lly was
back in four th. Connelly turned th e w ick up
early an d came around in the lead by lap two,
with Josh Navarro tra iling. David Meyers took
the thi rd sp ot mid way, making Joey N ava rro
settle for fourth.
Connell y could do no wrong as he cam e out
an d took repea t w ins in the 80ce Intermed ia te
class as well: Connelly was first out of the gate,
with Josh Navarro shadowing his every mov e.
Na varro mad e a move on . t he third lap but
found the freshly watered track didn't offer the
traction necessary to keep his Kawasaki upright
in the comer. Navarro was able to get back up in
second , but ra n he out of laps while try ing to
catch Connelly.
The ba d lu ck follow ed Navarro in to moto
two. Again Connelly took the ear ly lead . Navarro cam e off the hill in the lead on lap two but
wen t down in a slippery corner , causing Connelly to also go down. ConnelIy got up first and the
race was over.
The 125cc Intermed ia te race had five riders,
.and each was equally qua lified.to take the win , so
separate mo to winn ers was no su rprise. Joshua
West exited tu rn one behind Matt Condon in the
first moto, but West was able to make a move on
the following lap . Co nd on provided plenty of
pressure throughout the race and even made a
last-tum attempt, but he had to settle for second .
Co ndo n came bac k in the foll owing mot o
and got the holeshot aga in, but th is time West
suffered mechani cal W OL"S and headed into the
p its onla p .one. Steven Euge nio took up t he
cha lleng e, but Co ndon prov ed to be too quick
for Eugenio , who ea rned seco nd overa ll af ter
placing third in moto one .
Co ry Criss p rov ided most of the en tertainment in the 125cc Novice d ivision. Criss had little trouble t a king the first mot o, as he qu ickly
distanced himself from Pete Scully. In the second
moto, it was Scully exiting tum one ahead of the
pack, with Criss hot on his tail. Criss madeseveral attemp ts the first two laps , but he only threa tened for the lead once, by going outs ide of Scully
in front of the tower. Scully was able to brake in
front of Criss, caus ing Criss to fall. Scully then
had p len ty of breathi ng room betw een himself
and Chris Livin gston . Criss was able to cha rge
back up to second, and he tried to make a move
on Scully on the last lap in the whoop s, but the
wh oops go t the best of him and he finishe d in
eighth. Scully earned the ove rall win, with Livingsto n takin g second overa ll.
The 125cc Beginn er class featu red 12 rid ers,
but mos t eyes were on on Aubri ana Dunn . The
15-year -old came off the gate ' third in moto onc
and finished in fifth. The moto was won handily
by D~n DeWall. who also came back to repea t in
mo to two. In th e seco nd mot o, thou gh , Dunn
beat most of the boys by crossing the line second
in class a119 earning thir d ove rall.
.Ken Lurcook edged out jim Schmidutz for the
Vet Novice overall win. Schmidutz won the first
moto, with Lurcook trailing him from the dro p of
the gate. The Sl.'COnd moto appcan'd to be a repeat,
as Schm idutz led four of the fiv e laps. Lur cook
hamm ered it throu gh the last set of whoops and
was able to take the lead going outside the next
comer. Sdunidutz regained - positive attitude and
a
caug ht Lurcook a t the finish line. The two flew
side by SI e over the finish line, with Lurcook takd
ing the win by the knobs of his front tire.
Kyle Yost won the 250 Novice class, with 2-3
placin gs on the day. Steve Slad e won the first
moto, with Pete Scully taking a wire-tcrwire victcr
ry in the second moto. Scully had troubles keeping
his four-stroke alive in moto one and finished 11tho
