Elliott flew a round lhe trock. protecting his lead from a hu ngry Emig and an eage r Keith Johnson, w ho sliced his way to a ",..cond·place finish ofter a fifth-p looe slart. In mot a tw o, Yamaha-backed Chris Torran ce was th e ma n o n a m iss ion, as he cha rged th e track hard , his foo tpeg pu lling up flags off the fin is h-li ne jump in lap o ne . Mota tw o 's ac tion also included jo hnson and Emig duking it out as Emig fend ed off johnson for the firs t few lap s. johnson took the lead on lap three coming o ut of th e Village Badlands . Midwa y throu gh mot o tw o, Honda·mounted riders Heath Frazier and Elliott collided, leaving Frazier to finish the moto without a seat a nd with his back fender wrecked, right alongSide the bartle- worn and mangled rear fender of Elliott. Oklahoma's Kenn y Bartram was all over Torrance like a duck on a Jun e bug for third until they swapped pos itions on lap five and it was Torrance's turn to chase Bartram. In t he fi nal m oto , j o h n so n clai me d t he holeshot, w a tch in g fo r Torrance as he went supersonic, m ovin g fro m fourth to second in the first lap. Torrance wen t on to a p ply a hea vy dose of pressure on johnson, un til Torrance took johnson at the apex of the infield left-hand turn. Then jo hnson im media tely returned the favor. Torrance was n ot to be o u tdone th is mot a a nd regained the lead on the white-flag lap and held it to the checkers. Right after the moto, overall winner johnson was asked why he let Torrance pa ss him on the final lap. "( didn't know he was that close to me until we w ent over th e fin ish-line ju m p in the last lap: ' johnson responded with a laugh. "Chris revved his motor so lou d, I thought it was a n airplane going too low over the jump, and then two tu rns later he started sc r ea m ing at me, passed me, and it scared the crap out of me." p ushed him to th e ba ck of t he pa ck . Ellio tt g ra bbed a fistf ul o f throttle as he wo rk ed his way thro ugh the pock to finish fifth. By finishing 3-3 in his ea rlie r motes, Ellio tt's tall y netted hi m an overa ll thi rd . The next section was designed to let th e riders ca tch their breath on the fast sa n d washes and up onto the je roads. Th e 18-m ph speed ep averages allowed riders the opportunity to catch a view of the many snowca pped mo untains as they rod e into the 4o-minute reset. "W ith everyone back on tim e, r id ers were chec ked into the remaind er of the loop, w hich was set up at 30 mph. The second loop was d ifferent from the first. At th e morning meeting , th e riders were Instructed to fo llo w the black dITO\"'S on th e first loop and th e red a rrow s on the second loop. This sounded simple en ough, but it became a significant problem as the event played out. Rider s started ba ck in to the same long. brutal 20mile special test , whi ch included the first test . Stre tch remembered his lines and shaved o ff some time through his second tes t. as did mos t of th e ot he r top riders. At th e bo ttom is where severa l rid ers had prob lem s. The course rout ed the riders ba ck to the o riginal "C special-tes t en trance a th ird time . Tr ail boss Dt. Taylor had inte nded th is to surprise the rid ers, and su rp rised the y we re, becau se th e red arr ows they ha d been tra ckin g were no t pr esent - on ly the o rigi na l w hite arrows we re. Most of the riders did the scramb le ro u tine, confe r red w it h each o ther and decided to fo llow the first- loop arrows anyway. They were relieved to find, just a short distance in to th e section, mo re secondloo p red arrows tha t eve n tua lly ro u ted them off the original tes t to complete the final SIX miles of steep 4WD rood into the finish . Unfo rtunately, several rid e weren 't that lu ckv an d decided to rs ride rock to- the finish via the first -loop dirt-road route , o n ly to discover the y had made the wrong decision. Th ey were la ter disqualified . The circu msta nces th at led up to th is situation warrant exp lana tion. . Tay lor, wh o normally would hav e preridden th e co ur se sev eral times, wa s not able to d o so . He was involved in a cra sh with a vehicl e on his ATV on h is way back from marking th e cou rse. The cr ash landed Tay lor in th t.' hospital for an ove r n igh t s tay, as he had a co nc u ss io n . Had Tayl or bt.' n able to preride th e cou rse, he a lmost e ce rta in ly would ha ve ca ug h t th e a rrow-co lo r problem. After a bri ef d ry spell from his winning ways, the Moose Offroad /FMF/ Bridges to ne /U ltim a te Motorsports -ba cked Stretch returned to the form that earned him the 1998 RMEC Cha mpionship. Stretch a nd his KX250 blasted through the 86 ground miles tha t made up the two loops of racing, winning two special tests on his way to victory. This year's event was once again organized as a relia bility trial and served as round seven o f th e RMEC Champio nship series. The sta rt area was in a new location than in previous years, an d it had Stretch an d the other 225 rid ers won dering what and w here the special-tes t sectio ns w ould be. Th eir qu estions w ere answered just th ree mil es off the sta rt as they were checked int o the first long special-test section. Ride rs rec: ogn ized this section as a tight and technical tra il th rough a narrow, rock-hammered san d w ash that lasted for 1I miles . Ju s t when m o st th ought th e test was over, th ey w er e routed into th e infamous horse-trail secti on , which ha s typically been the start ar ea in prev ious ye ars . The lo ng, 9-m ile techn ical p ie ce of si n g le-track is known fo r i ts toug h uphiIIs and off-camber sidehiIIs. Stretch checked out of the 2o-mile test on the g as, cardin g fast time.
