What more fittin g perso n to win the Miln e C u p than jack's gra nd nep he w Gary Hicks, and what better presenter of the Q ueen's Coronation Cu p originally won by Jack in Wembley , Englan d, in 1937 before 93,000 fans, than his grand daughter Catherine Lopez? The forma t was all Scratch racing - five rid ers, four laps . Points were awa rded by finishes. The top 10 in points.. moved to the sem is. Hicks started his night off in winn ing fash ion by top pin g the field in this round of qua lifying. The sec ond heat was won by Scott Brand t, and Brad Oxley took third- heat honors. In secon d -round action, Hicks again won his heat as Bobb y Schwa rt z, Brant a n d Andy Nort hru p all won their respective hea ts as well. With two rou nds in the books, Hicks and Bran t were tied with perfect scores . Oxley, Venegas and jim Este.. followed. Bra n t p ull ed off ye t anot he r win in th e th ird rou nd , d u r in g th e first hea t. Ve negas man aged to beat out Hicks in the second heat. Schwartz a nd Ermol cn ko won heats th ree and four . In the first semi race, Venegas again beat out Hicks, bu t both still headed for the main, while Estes and John Ade n hea ded for the Iast-d1ance qualifier. Oxley beat out Brant in the second semi, bu t it was Northrup and Schwartz who headed to the LCQ. Nort hrup later transferred ou t of the LCQ and into the main to fill out the progra m. The lineup for the mai n had the pole going to Brant. Venegas was in lane n vo a nd Hicks got his lucky thIl"C spot. Northrup was;n four and Oxley was on the outside in five. The gate we nt up a n d Hick s a nd Brant w e n t out toge t he r . Oxley sp un out in the first tum, an d that was just the bt.-ginning,. as Vent.-gas got too sideways in three and abo spun around . The bike hooked and hit Nort hru p, and Hicks had no choice but to go ove r it. The red flag came out a nd a comp lete restart was called, since all the exciteme nt happened on the first lap and more than half the field wen t down. On the restart , it was agai n Brant a nd Hicks who we nt out togeth er. All five rid ers swa pped paint as they exited tu.m two, bu t it was Hicks who had the lead , and once there, he was not to be denied . Bra nt tried every thing he knew bu t the night belonged to Hicks. Oxley a nd Venegas ran four th and fifth behind No rt hru p all the way to the finish. . Results . MILN E CUP: 1. Berkey perky at Field of Dreams Motocross By Thad Dawson .BOSWELl., PA, JUNE 27 It was a clea r but hot d ay at Field of Dreams Motocross Par k for the third roun d of the District 5 Su mmer Series . A good turnout led to some grea t racing action in all the c1as..o;;es. In the Co lk'ge dass, how ever , it was Brad Berkey all the way . Berkey had his wo rk cut out for him in the stacked cl as s . In t he fi rs t mo to, Nea l Ha rt na bbed th e ho les ho t, wi t h Brad Ber key a nd j ason McHugh dose be hind . Berkey q uickly moved up to ta ke the lead in the ea rly part of the first lap. Doug las Stofko was also in the front of the pack before he wen t d own . By the second la p, Berkey had pulled a five-second lead over Hart. McH ugh was following the lead ers d oseIy, along with Aaron Lan ter. Hart started to pu ll a lead on McHugh befor e becomin g a victim of a deepl y ru tted corner . McHu gh too k' advantage of this a nd too k over second , wi th H ar t a nd Lanter d ose behind at the checke red flag. Th e seco nd m ot o took off with a ban g as Stofko took the holeshot, followed by McH ugh, Ha rt, Berkey and Scott Tri cke t. Berkey once again quickly took the lead before a bobble left him in second , behind McHu gh . In a battl e for th ird , Stofko cu t insid e to keep Hart in chec k. On the third lap , Berkey and McHugh we re side by sid e for thr ee sec tions of the course before Berkey p ulled ahead ove r the finis h-line jum p. After obtai ni ng the lead , Berkey continued to pull on the rest of the pack. The on ly battle left was for second, as Stofko overpowered McHugh on the big step- up and pu lle a little lead befo re d the checkered flag. Another exciting moto to watch was in the 125ccA class. In the second mo te, Stephen Crowe took the holcshot and the eventual win . Brad .StL·vens Stofko and justin Paris closely followed . Cro we thro ugh the first turn. By the 'se cond lap, Crowe had pulled a small lead over Stofko. who had passed Stevens. Pa ris closely followed in fou rth. Thou gh the re was a lot of close racing, this was how they crossed the finish line. IX, JUNE 26-27 Not eve n the ·threat of storms could keep eager riders a way from Swan Motocr oss, host of the School's Out Blow-Ou t Grand Prix. The event was the first of a three-event lineup, includi ng Swan's firs t-eve r nigh t race on Sat u rday. Trails in the b.1ck woods were opened for the GP to extend the track 's circuit. After the GP, a short nigh t track was set up with portable lights just in case da rkness descen ded before the competition ended. The final even t, on Sund ay, was held on the original day track layout with a full dual-moto format The endura nre--testing GP action got und er way wi th several com bined classes run in 2()" and 3O-minute-mo to fonnat.s. It was interesting to see several rid ers who were new to GP racing hot-dog it in the ea rly laps, bu t by the time the w hite flag came o u t, th ey were rid ing pret ty tame. In the combined big-bike event, Billy Smith chased Jason Wi lliams fo r 30 m inu tes , wi th WiJlia ms fin is hi ng three seco nds in front of Smith. William s' and Smi th' s la p tim es were consis tent , as they docked in at 3.5 minu tes. The second GP dass com bmed all 80cc classes. jesse Moore set a rocket -fired pace as he flew aro und the track, docking three minutes and 40 seconds . Moo re kept increasing his lead over seco nd place, finishi ng with a fina l lap time of three minutes and 20 seconds, and with a 3O-St."'Cond lead ove r seco nd p lace. History was ma d e Satu rday eveni ng wit h Swa n's first-ever night race. Ract.S began short ly ' a ft e r 5 p .m . In th e 80cc 02- 13) class, Co dy Chatagnier and Chase Gued ry fou ght the battle of the blu es bet ween their YZs as Chatagnier grabbed the holeshot in moto one and rode hard to set up camp out front. Guedry tric to wresUe 'd in th e 125cc Int ermed ia te event by Yama ha mounted Chase Romero. In mot o on e of the 125cc lnt erm ed ia te / Pro race, Gerdes chased Chase Rom ero to the ch£"Ck· ers. In mo ta two , Gerdes over ra n the holeshot corne r and drop pf...-d ba ck to fif th. He had his wor k cu t ou t for him if he was to catch Romero . Ge rdes sliced a path through the field and by the end of the first lap he was knocking on the back doo r of the secon d- placed rid er, Pro racer Jimbo. Morto n. Gerdes had Morton in his cross hairs , but Morton refused. to back d own. Gerdes was aU over Morton 's bad, from the finish· line jum p throu gh the whoops, and then they were s id e by side coming o ut of the woods to the number-three jump. Streaking through the second wooded sectio n, Gerdes' effort paid off as he moved into second. On the w hite-flag lap, Ge rdes literally shaved th e knobbies off Romero's bac k tire, but Rom ero stood up to the pressure an d finis hed on a slic k. At the finis h line, good sportsmanship prevailed , as Romero and Gerdes shoo k han ds on a grea t race.
