into fourth, and Ted Kukla held fifth as the pack
cam e through the scorin g section for the first
time. Boulware wasted no time, shooting by
H.111 durin g the second lap and im med iately
opening up a one-seco nd cushion. Scott was in
control of third, some five bike leng ths in front
o f Ku kl a , wh o ma n a g ed to go a rou nd
Arzou ma n jus t before the midway poin t of the
race. O ut front, Boul ware stre tched his lead to
tw o seco nds, but Ha ll was rid ing hard in second . As the mot o wore on, the battl e for third
became e pic. Ar zouma n we n t ba ck arou nd
Ku kla just aft er th e two- lap!" signa l was give n
and closed in on Sco tt in thi rd . Ku kla d id not
give in, and soo n the battle was a three-way one
for th e position . The ride rs spent the last two
laps d icing hard for the spot, often three abreas t
on a lterna te lines, In the end, Boulwa re cruised
in for the w in and Hall clai med second . Scott
held strong and wa s ab le to fend off the pas~
att empts of Ar zouman on th e last lap , and he

earned the third- p lace position. Kukla finishe
up in fifth.
Once again, Hall sna gged the .holeshot and
Boulware had his YZ4 00 thumper in second a t

moved up to occupy fourth. Meanwhile, Boulware realized he had the proverbial tiger by the
tail as he tried to chase down Hall for the lead .
Hall was putting in a stellar rid e, as he was hitting his lines and doing everything he could to
keep th e first -m ota wi nner behind him.

moto, Hall sta rted to inch bac k up to the leader,
but he ran ou t of time , and when the ch eckers
came out , Boulware was the first ride r to see the
flag . H all was again runner-up , while
Arzo uman coa s te d in thi rd . Me ll o r rode in
fourth, and Scott remounted to earn fifth . O n the
day, the overa ll victo ry w as Bou lwa rc's by
virtue of his perfect 1-1 rides. Hall was a strong
$l.umd with his 2-2 tally, and Arzouman ea rned
the thir d- place brass with his 4-3 rides.

has become. a t least in recent weeks, a foru m of
ind ivid ual race-night do mination for California's

fines t Spee way riders. For the third consecu tive
wee k, the same man won both the Handicap and
Scra tch ma in events. Form er Auburn track champion Bobby Hedden was the latest to finish first
in the night's most prestigiou s finals.
"It's abo u t time I got the lead ou t of my butt
an d sta rted goin g fast ," sa id the clearly elated
Hedden after the event. " I'm fina lly gelting thi s
new motor dialed in. I'm feeling more and more
like myoid self aga in."
Ht..'liden was also one of the ride rs fortunate
en ou gh to perform in a series of cro wd- pleasing
ma tch races with visiting sp' >dwa y legend John
Coo k. The Swedish Leagut.. based American is

th ree top poin f lead ers in Northern Californi a Mike Faria, Bart 6.15t and Jimm y Sisemore ~ all

the same fate as Faria , as Hed de n contin ued his
assault on the cushion . Robert Curry, from the

lap . Curry's close proximi ty to Essary provided
Heddt:I1 with a perfect opportunity to sweep by
both riders and in to the lead , which is exactly
what the talt:I1ted 28-year-old d id , on his way to
the win. Essary sustained seco nd place an d third
went to Curry.
In the Scratch ma in, Hed de n wa s not the first
ride r off th e line; that d istinction went to Billy
[ a nniro , w ho d isqual if ied hi m se lf when h e
jum ped th e sta rt and broke the sta rting tap es .
Ven egas, who seemed to hav e ina dver ten tly
suc ked Jan ni ro in to the ta pes on th e first goarou nd , was th e firs t off the line in the res tart .
Ho wever , Hedden, who came from starting lan e
th ree, was th e first into the com er and drove
right around the inside-running Vene gas, 'who
had the advantage of sta rti ng on the ins ide pole
positi on . With Janniro no longer occu pyi ng lan e
tw o, there wa s a bit mor e trac k roo m to wo rk
with, and Hed den made good use of it as he got
around Venegas cleanly a nd was clea rly in fron t
befo re a singl e lap was finished . Bob Hicks was

the other rider in the main, but despite his re ent
ap pa re n t resurge nce, he could no t d o mu ch
from lane four an d trailed the lea d ers the ent ire
race, even tually claiming the third -place points.
Venegas stayed up with Hed den for all fou r la ps
but could not find an opening and had to settle
for second place.
