Hill, Ohi o's David Rife during motocross racing
actio n at Grand Prix Mo to Park. Rife kn ocked
out the competition at t he heavil y a tt e nded
event. Hot temperatures and a lack of precipitation in th e a rea for ced promoter Drew Wolfe
into wa te r-sat urat ion mode to fend off th e
impe nding dryness, an d the lengthy circu it held
up well un der the conditions . While Rife used
the power of his KX250 to sweep both motos for
the overall in the 250cc'B class, he would hav~ a
mo re d ifficult time in th e 125cc con tes t. Lessth an ·d esi rable star ts on his CRl25 for ced Rife
into a catch·up meth od of racing, an d his 3-2 finishes were fortuna tely eno ug h to take the over·

Gilliam tears up LACR MX

Brent Gilliam just plain out ·
ra n th e competitio n en route to his two-moto
sweep of the 12Sec Intenned iate class during the
VP Racing Fuels-sponsored round of California
Racing Club 's Satu rday night motocross at Los
Ange les Cou nty Racew ay.
Opening·ro und action saw Gilliam exit the
first tu m with the lead , followed by Chris Elliott
and Raymo nd Smith. Todd Gosse laar made his
way up in to thi rd a fter a lap by going under·
nea th Smith at the base of the Over-and-Under
section . Gosselaar used the same line a lap later
to drop Elliott from second to third place. Goss<.~
laar spent the next few laps closing in on Gilliam ,
but Gilliam turned up the wick and greeted the
checkers with five seconds to spa re. Elliott came
acr oss a lonel y third, ah ead of Jared Williams,
wh o was making his Intermediat e-dass debut.
Sergio Pon ce De Leon rebounded fro m a firsttum cras h for fifth, ahead of Don nie Durrer. ·
Gilliam led th e seco nd moto right from the
drop of th e ga te, just ah ead o f Willi am s a nd
Elliott, with Gos selaar tow ard the back of the
field . Within a lap, Gosselaa r wa s up into third
place and pressuring William s. GosseJaar pas.."ied
William s and latched on to Gilliam 's rear fend er .
Th e next seven laps providt'd some intense racing as Gilliam a nd Gosselaar a rg ued over the
top spo t. The more experienced Cilliam did not
budge un de r the constant barrage from GoSSL"laar and took the weJl-dcscrvl..--d win .
"I have n't go t a good start in a whil e, and I
fina lly got a ho Jes hot ," a hap py Gill iam said
afterward . "Gosselaar pulled up behind me in
thc second mot o. He was ca tching me bu t he
couldn 't get a wheel in. I wa s so happy· I was in
the lead and I knew I could hold him off."
Ellio tt even tua lly wo rked his way around
Williams to finis h th ird in the moto and third
overall beh ind Gosse laar . Williams came acro ss
a res pectable fourth, ahead of Tyler Prince and
Smit h.
