Castro, Schwartz tops at Costa Mesa Speedway By Elaine Jones Photo by Mike Basso COSTAMESA, CA, JUNE 12 48 Raz zo th e Clown, the speedway ra cer /clow n fro m Czechoslovakia, made his yearly appeara nce a t Cos ta Mt.."S<1 Speedway for Trader Maga· zine's Fan Appreciation Night . The year ~l w ay from Costa Mesa ha s not humbled him in an y wa y, as he again put down the locals as "pansy American racers ," "They ar e dirt on my boots," said Razzo . By the end of the nig ht, it wa s the o ther way around , as Bobby Schwartz defeated him in the Scra tch main e ven t. Razzo did not even make the tran sfer to the Handicap main event, which Charlie Venega s won . The Mat ch ra ce between Razz o and Brad Oxley was the only thin g that kept the night from being a com plete bust. He won that o n the las t l~lP by in ches . Since the kids were the focus of Fan Appreci ation Night, it w o uld be th e kids who determine the starting positions for the Scratch main d with a footrace around the Bullring. The youngs ter running for H icks w as the fast es t, givi ng Hicks the firs t pick. He chose four. Razzo drew the pole, with Schwartz in two and McConnell in three. The final slot went to Brant. on the outside in fiv e. The ga te ca me up and Sch w a rtz exploded int o the lead. Razzo go t a little too agg res sive o n the first lap and came very close to putting both Hicks and Brant in to the wall. Only their r id ing ability saved them , Ra z zo went hunting for Schwartz, a nd that w ould be his undoing.. as the veteran gave as good as he got and Razzo end ed up in the back of the pack, with Hicks runn ing sec o nd and McC onnell, making the inside wo rk, in third. Brant was runni ng fourth, a nd Razzo was bringi ng up the rear . They finished in tha t order. Th e lineu p for the Han d icap ma in had Winsto n alone on the l O-yard line. On the 4o-ya rd lin e we re Cast ro an d Ack royd . Th e SO was sha red by Venegas and No rthrup. Starting from downtown Cos ta M e sa (on t he 60 ) we re McConnell, Hicks a nd Schwartz. At th e s ta rt, Wi nsto n held th e lead for one lap before Cas tro ran him down and too k over. Venega s a nd Hi cks th en go t by him. O ne lap lat er , McCo nn e ll got by on the insid e to ta ke third awa y fr o m H ick s . At th e sa m e t im e , Northrup passed Winston to pu t himse lf in fifth. On the fourth la p, Wins ton, ru nning ahead of Sch w a r tz a n d Ac k roy d , t ried t o fl a t-tra ck through tu m one and wa s going m uch slow er than the rid ers beh ind him . Schwartz was left wit h little cho ice, and he stood the bike up to kee p from hittin g Winston , and this caused him to h ig h-si d e. U nab le to rea ll y see wh at w a s go ing on, Ackroyd ran into the ba ck of Schwartz and he, too, high -sided . Both rid ers went d own. Sch w a rt z w as able to ge t _u p ; u nfortuna tel y , Ackroyd had to be transported to the hospital. Schwartz seem ed okay but d id not res tart and the five remaining laps would be all Cas tro, who was long o verd ue for a wi n. Venegas was second and McCon nell third. Hicks a nd Winston were the fina l finishers. T he Sideca r mai n was fu ll of bumps and rubs, as it was a battle royal for the win. Th e gate wen t to Steve Morro w and Chris Chapman. OUt behind them by a hair was the team of Bob Brayton and Dwayne King, The Mission Yama ha team of Bill Matherson and Dale Leeder was rid ing do uble with Brayton and King as they hit the first tum. By the end of tum one , M.ltherson a nd Leeder were in se cond a nd ch a lleng ing, When the white flag came ou t, it was the drh'e out of fo ur and the drag race to the checke red tha t gave the win to MathcI:SQn and u.'t.-der b¥ an eyelash . Morrow and Chapman were second, with Brayton a nd King th ird . Alan Hall a nd Jack Straw, stiU gettin g used to each o t he r, wen" fourth. Th e Suppor t main was a "s u rviva l o f the fittest," and the fittes t wa s Rand y ~kinner . The only other rider to finish was Bentle y Barrett. The turno ut was huge, wit h 17 riders ri din g p rehi s toric b ikes on the inf amous Ca rlsbad motocross circuit. Th e wi nners of the Bombe r Novice a nd Bomber Expert classes we re Lance Hamel and Tho mas Engelhardt. Whe n the p ack of Bom ber No vice ra cer s crested the top of The Ledge and d rop ped into t he in fi e ld po r t io n o f th e tr a ck , t h e lead belonged to Rick Hennin g. He was followed by Bob Barnett and Ham el. The trio of rid ers w er e battlin g it o ut , w ith no sign s of anyone letting up . The first rid er to break fo rma tio n wa s Barnett, wh o managed a move on Henn in g, who was now be ing hounded by Ham el for the second posi tion , Wit h those riders' lap times fair ly consistent, they began pulling a huge lead ove r the fourt h-pl aced rid er, Dennis Middleton, who wa s hooked up in a battle with Don Stevenson. When the whi te flag came out, the race looked to be se ttled - Barnett still leading. with Henning and Ham el in tow. But nothing is ever certain in motocross, and when the pack of ride rs came back into view, it w as Hamel in th e lead , fo llowed by Barnett and Henning. The seco nd mota was more o f th e sa m e. Hamel go t a 'good s tart and led the pack aft er the first lap . Second bel onged to Barnell, and th ird was Henning ' s. Th e track wa s getting ru gged , and it wa s a p pa re nt th at the a ncie nt suspe ns ion componen ts w ere beginning to fade - along with the ra cers aboard them. The top three looked good, but Hamel be gan to pull away from the others. The battle was now for second, between Barnett a nd Henning. Henning made his move by the end of the se ond lap. It c was too little too late; Hamel was gone in a flash . By the end of the race, Ha mel had a cou p le of lap pers between himself and Henning. Barnett was rig ht there in thi rd, but he was never ab le to make a counte rmove on Henning for second . In the Bomber Expert class, the overall was decided rather easily, as half the racers did not s how up fo r the second m o ta . Th e first mot o wa s a good race. The holeshot we n t to Hootie Da vi s. Th e seco nd s pot wa s held b y Thomas Engelhardt. Davis bega n to ru n away and hid e from the pack. Engelha rd t rod e hard on h is vinta ge Yama ha, but it wa s in vain because Dav is had pu lled a comfortable margin ove r the pack. Th e ba tt le w as fo r seco nd be tw ee n Engelh ar dt a nd Ha rry Beeler . The two rid ers battl ed it out until lapped traffic devastated Bader's momentum. The finis hin g order was Davis w ith a mag. sive lead, followed by Eng elhardt a nd the n Beeler in third. ' Th e sec o nd mot o w as a n Engelha rd t ca kewa lk, as Da vis a nd Bad er d ecid ed not to take their Bomber bikes back out on the track.
