Mammoth Mountain M cross oto Events By Chr is Sanchirico MAMMorn LAKES, CA, JUNE 21-22 ary Scheidler bested the Over 38 Expert class in the second annual Over The Hill Gang's Mammoth Mo untain Motocross, sponsore d by Yamaha Motor Corporatio n and Yamaha Genuine Parts and Accessories. The twoday, four-mo te event brought together all four chap ters of the gang from all over Cali fornia and Nevada. More than 427 OTH G members and guests assembled each day to prove w ho was king of the m~unta in. Th~ mou nt ainous, na turally twisty, loa m-filled track is 1.8 miles of mo to nirvana. The immaculately prepped and watered facilit y was even mo re l~my than in previous years, which provided for some deep berms, wider lines, faster lap times, and tons of fun . DSP / CTI/ Ya m a h a Motor Corp'; Dunlop-backed Scheidler consistently put his YZ out in front of the 26-rider field en route to a 2-4-3-1 score for the weekend. Scheidler had his hands full with Larry Brown, Gilbert Chic and Rich Mannschre ck, all o f whom hail fro m the Reno cha pter. The four riders battled b ar to bar in a ll four motos . Brown s ho wed th e field th e fas t wa y around the track on day one, going 1-l. Chic and Sch eidler swap pe d positions on the firs t da y, with Chic ge tting the edge, going 4-2 to Scheidl er's 2-4. On d ay tw o, th e battl e heated up, with th e o ve ra ll s t ill up for g ra bs. Mannschreck came out swinging, grabbin g th e vi cto ry in mota on e, with Brown and Scheidler finishing se cond and third, re spectively. Chic saw his chan ces for the overall victory go up in smoke as his motor gave out going up the Mammoth uphill, knocking him out o~ con tention with a 25th. Chic salvaged eighth overall by taking fifth in the final mota. With the overall in his sight, disaster struck Brown as he was caught in a first-turn pileup. The incid ent ruined his near-perfect weekend, relegating him to fourth overall with a 1-1-2-20. Scheidler seized th e opportunity and cemented the overall on the weekend by absconding with the holeshot in the last moto en ~oute to a wire-to-wire victory. Finishmg second wa s Mannschreck, with a 310-1-4. Will Coates, from the Bay Area , was third with a 7-5-4-3. You could say the biggest winner of the weekend was Southern California's Michael Fanelli , who is the first person in America to own a year-2000 YZ2S0. The YZ was do nated by Yamaha Moto r Corpor at ion, which was ra ffled off to ra ise more· th a n $6800 for Yamaha's selected charity, Feed The Chil dren. In the Pro class, it was the Pro-Valveba cked YZ400 of Sco tt My ers tak ing home the lion' s share of the Pro purse . After two days 01 rac ing, Myers raced to top honors in the premier class. MXA /W hit e Brothers-ba cked Mu sgrave. This time, Myers app lied the heat early in the mota. The thunderous boom must have intimidated the ever-consistent Musgrave, who made a rare mistake and found himself on the ground in the fetal position. Myers pounced on the mistake and rode to the victory. Mu sgrave remounted back in the pack and made a valiant charge, but he was too far back to catch the leaders, finishing in 11th . Musgrave found himself too sore to co m p e te on day t wo. In 'th e final mota, Fowler launched his CR to th e front of the pack up the fifth-gear uphill. The extremely aggressive Myers wasted little time and was showing a wheel to Fowler every chance he could. Myers then put on a flat-track demons tra tion as he hugged the insid e of the flat turn wide open, passing Fowle r for the lead and the even tual win. Davis also turn ed up th e wick a no tc h to take Fowle r b efo re the ch ec ke rs for seco nd, with Fowle r hang in g on to th e th ird s po t. Fowler held on to second overall with a 3-2-2-3. Davis finished close behind with a 5-3-3-2 for the final podium positi on . In th e O v er 38 Pro cla s s, N o Fear/ Spy Optics co-owner Jeff Surwall was in th e zone, ripping up th e terra firma with a perfect score of 1-1-1-1 en route to th e ove rall. Surwall did have his wo rk cut ou t for him, ha vin g to battl e fro m behind on seve ra l occas io ns . Alan DeLarge did his best to defeat Sur- w all but had to settle for a well-deserved second on the we ek end with a 3- 2- 2-3 . YZ400-mounted Mark Sirota found the loamy, rich dirt to his liking, picking up the pace with cons isten t rid es and excellent st arts to tak e home the pla sti c for third ove rall. In the Su ppo rt class, Wiseco /White Brothers-ba cked Pat Fost er a nd Thousand Oaks /Holley Racing /FMF-backed Zeb Armstrong demonstra ted how to pu sh a 250cc to its limits, as the tw o upand-coming Pr os blistered th e tr ack w it h blindin g speed . Fost er took the upper hand in mota one. In moto tw o, Arm strong picked up the pace and hounded Foster for nin e laps around the lon g, serpentine track. At the checkers, they were separated by a wheel. Unfortunately, Foster had p rior engagements and was unable to attend on Sunday. On day two, Chris Nitzel a nd Andy Anaya ju mped into the m el ee with Armst ro ng. Ni tzel took a m o ta w in and second overa ll on the weekend on his CR12S. Anaya sec u re d th ird overa ll , w it h Arms t ro ng ta k in g th e top honors. _ • Mammoth Mountain Motoc ross Mamm oth, Californ ia Results: June 21·22 BEC: 1. N ick le Dally: 2.
